Robert Callaghan, or also better known by his supervillain name Yokai, is the main antagonist of Disney's 54th full-length animated feature film Big Hero 6 and a minor character in Big Hero 6: The Series.
He is a former university teacher presumed dead in a fire; until he later re-emerged using a vast army of microbots in his plan to take revenge on Alistair Krei, whom he blames for the supposed death of his daughter Abigail Callaghan. He is also the former archenemy of Hiro Hamada and Baymax.
He was voiced by James Cromwell.
His Evil Ranking[]
His Villainous Deeds[]
- He set an entire building on fire to steal Hiro's micro bots and fake his death to make sure no one would know about his plans. This caused Tadashi Hamada to be killed when he tried to go in and save him and while it was an accident, he was still aware of the fact that Tadashi's blood was on his hands and when Hiro called him out for what he had done he felt no remorse for Tadashi's death and outright says that it was Tadashi's mistake and not his.
- When Hiro and Baymax first find his hideout, he tries to kill both of them though they thankfully escape.
- When Hiro and Baymax come back to fight him and Hiro's friends appear, he throws a giant metal shipping container at them (even though their only teenagers) with the intent on killing them though Baymax saves them.
- When Hiro, Baymax, and rest try to get away in a car, he chases them down and nearly kills them despite them not being threats to him and only stops after thinking they drowned in the ocean. Luckily, the gang survive Yokai's tyranny.
- When the newly formed Big Hero 6 find a video explaining why he wants to rebuild the machine he throws a giant piece of debris at them which could have gotten them killed had Baymax not intervened.
- When Alistair Krei made his presentation, he used the micro bots to destroy rebuild the portal to destroy his building for "taking away his daughter" which could have resulted in many deaths.
- When the Big Hero 6 come to stop him and try to reason with him, he tries to kill them a final time though thankfully he fails and they defeat him.
- Because of his actions of rebuilding the portal Baymax ended up dying saving Hiro and his daughter and though Baymax was revived it still had an impact on Hiro who was already traumatized from Tadashi's death.
Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]
- While he is very ruthless, he just doesn't quite meet the baseline for a few reasons:
- He merely destroys buildings with no context as it is unknown if the fire caused any deaths. It is also possible that Yokai didn't intend to burn anyone to death when he caused the fire.
- He also fails the supervillain baseline, as he only has 1 direct kill and 2 indirect kills. He later tries to kill 6 people, but they were in his way and even if they weren't, that still be a bog-standard amount for a supervillain.
- Him rebuilding the portal doesn't make anything better since it is never remotely implied that anyone got killed in the incident, so this relies on Fridge Horror.
- He fails the heinous standards to Obake, Trina and Noodle Burger Boy, who attempted to kill everyone in San Fransokyo, and Diane Amara, who turns people into horrific monsters. On the other hand, however, Yokai is just a standard supervillain who only tries to kill the heroes and doesn't do anything beyond that.
- Not only that but he also fails the standard to random one-shot villains in the series, some of which explicitly kill people and others cause destruction and threaten multiple lives in San Fransokyo.
- He loves his daughter, Abigail, and wanted to avenge her. In fact, his fall to villainy is understandable because Krei was arrogant. Krei knew the portal was unstable before trying to teleport Abigail. He did not bother to deal with a slight, strange activity in the portal's magnetic containment field. Instead, Krei proceeded to send Abigail into the portal, sucking almost everything in the lab and trapping Yokai's daughter in the portal for weeks.
- It also makes him tragic. While he refused to redeem himself when Krei expressed regret about what happened with his daughter, Callaghan felt remorse about his deeds after Abigail's back, so, his tragedy is still actual.
- Even the series sympathizes with Callaghan because Big Hero 6 can understand Callaghan's motives.
- He was glad Abigail is alive and safe and showed gratitude towards Hiro about it.
- When he was sent to prison for his actions, he showed remorse of his actions and asked if Hiro could forgive him for what happened to Tadashi despite the latter declining. He even accepted that his actions are unforgivable and Hiro being unable to forgive him is justified.
- He has standards since he was disgusted at Hiro’s addiction for bot fighting and he even persuaded his daughter not to do that when she was little which shows that he’s a disciplined father too.
- In the series, when Chief Cruz shares his doubts about Big Hero 6, he politely tells him that he's wrong about them, showing that he's honorable.
