Hans Westergaard, better known as Prince Hans, is the secondary antagonist of Disney's Frozen franchise.

He is the prince of the kingdom of the Southern Isles who, at first glance, appears to be a caring and good-hearted individual towards Anna, but is later on revealed to be a manipulative, deceitful, and sadistic traitor who seeks to gain power over Arendelle and be seen as a hero in its people's eyes by any means necessary. He is Princess Anna's former fiancé-turned-arch-nemesis.

He was voiced by Santino Fontana.

He was heavily implied to kill villagers who couldn’t pay their taxes under King Westergaard’s orders before the events of Frozen as revealed in A Frozen Heart.
He deliberately hit Anna with his horse so he could get her attention and he even lied about that being an accident.
He manipulated Anna into trusting him and that he genuinely loved her when in reality, he merely wanted to marry her so that he could become king of Arendelle.
Before Anna leaves to search for Elsa, Hans wants to go with her, but she said he needs to take care of Arendelle. It is assumed that if he did come, he would fulfill his evil plans by killing both sisters and make up a story so he could be the ruler of Arendelle.
When Anna comes to him for his true love's kiss, he decides to drop the act and reveal his true nature and intentions to kill Elsa while putting out the fire in the room and sadistically taunting her as well as cruelly leaving her locked in the room to freeze to death.
He manipulated everyone into thinking that Elsa had killed Anna.
He lied to Elsa about Anna being dead, causing her to break down crying.
When Elsa starts crying about Anna's fake death, Hans attempts to finish her off with his sword, only for Anna to sacrifice her life to save Elsa from Hans.
Although he has several comedic moments, such as his flirting with Anna or his "Love Is An Open Door" song, many of them were part of his facade, and once his true nature was revealed, he loses them and becomes taken seriously.

Why He Doesn't Stand Out?[]

He is a genuinely tragic anti-villain, as he was moulded into the cruel man he is now due to the abuse and bullying he was put through by his brothers, which his father blatantly allows and even sometimes encourages. This is also exemplified by his insecurities and thus, he is too sympathetic to be NPE.
He is overall not heinous enough to meet the general standards, as him killing several villagers is reliant on Fridge Horror since there is no remote confirmation that he actually did it. The rest of his actions amount to trying to kill Anna and Elsa, making him a bog-standard "Kill the heroes" villain.
While King Runeard is an unfair comparison, he fails the standards to his own father who straight up executed those who resisted his laws or criticized him in person.
He has insecurities that are played for sympathy as his actions are motivated by a desire to prove himself to his father and brothers and no longer be abused by them anymore.
He is hinted to care for his brother, Lars, being the only sibling he has positive interactions with.
He shows remorse over carrying out the task his father, King Westergaard, had him carry against the villagers who couldn’t pay their taxes in A Frozen Heart, the text specifically mentioning that bile rose in his throat as he thought about it, though he felt like he still did what he had to do.
Despite being taken far more seriously towards the end of the first film, he still has some detracting moments such as in Frozen Fever where Anna and Elsa indirectly hit him with a snowball into the pile of horse poop he was digging up during his imprisonment and in Once Upon a Studio where he gets a humiliating defeat at the ends of Elsa.
