Power Rangers Dino Thunder is an American superhero drama serving as an adaptation of the 27th Super Sentai season Bakuryu Sentai Abaranger, and is the 12th season of Power Rangers. The show aired simultaneously on ABC Kids and Toon Disney and ABC Family's Jetix block.

The series features the return of Jason David Frank as Tommy Oliver, several years after the events of Power Rangers Turbo as he forms a new group of Power Rangers from high-school students to defend the world from Mesogog, a direct result of his experiments gone wrong.

Production[]

On March 4, 2003, a kick-off presentation was attended by representatives from Disney and Bandai to discuss the name for an upcoming Power Rangers adaptation of Bakuryu Sentai Abaranger. Early placeholder names included Dino Strike, Dino Might, Dino Damage, Dino Defenders, and Dragon Hunt.[1]

Casting[]

Jason David Frank elaborated in 2010 that he received a call from Douglas Sloan for a favor. As ratings for Power Rangers were down, they wanted one of the original Rangers to come back to potentially boost ratings and save their jobs.

Synopsis[]

Seven years after Tommy Oliver left the Turbo Rangers, he comes to Reefside, California as a high school paleontology professor where he leads three detention students: popular soccer player Conner McKnight, computer geek Ethan James, and aspiring musician Kira Ford into becoming the next generation of Rangers, the Power Rangers Dino Thunder. Their mission is to defend Earth from Mesogog, a mutant dinosaur being who wishes to eradicate all human life and return Earth to the age of the dinosaurs. On his side are his minions Zeltrax and Elsa, but the Rangers get an extra ally in form of the mysterious Trent Fernandez-Mercer.

Comics[]

A monthly comic strip based on the series appeared on several issues of "Jetix Magazine" in the UK. Jetix Magazine was the official magazine of JETIX, the channel that aired Dino Thunder in the UK. The following stories were printed:

Video Games[]

There were two games produced for the Dino Thunder series. On the Game Boy Advance, there was a side scrolling version which was a simple platformer involving fighting several foes from the series. The other game was produced for the PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo GameCube. This was the first Power Rangers game produced on a "next generation" console. Unexpectedly all the action takes place inside the zords. This game also had a few inconsistencies with the series to allow the action to take place in the zords while battling the regular bad guys who were human size. (The series always displayed a monster needing to be destroyed before it could be a giant, a side affect of the Hydro Re-Generator)

Notes[]

  • This series marks the return of Tommy Oliver as a main cast member.
  • Despite having an overall dinosaur theme, the Dimetrozord, Pterazord, and Dragozord are not technically dinosaurs, with both the latter two being pterosaurs and the Dimetrozord being a pelycosaur, a mammal-like reptile. Dimetrodon also lived at least 40 million years before any dinosaur.
  • Although the team lost their powers at the end of the series, the core three regained their abilities as of the events of History. While Tommy and Trent regained their abilities as of the events of Dimensions in Danger.

Aleia in her Pink Dino Thunder Form alongside Coinless Kimberly.

  • The "Power Rangers Dino Thunder" name was used in the Korean dubbing version from their respective Japanese Adaptation, even though the series was dubbed from Abaranger.
  • In Power Rangers Unlimited: The Morphin Masters #1 , the Pink Emissary appears in a previous unseen Pink Dino Thunder Ranger form when fighting alongside Coinless Kimberly. It is not know whether this was an error on the part of the creative team or if the appearance is meant to be canon.

Errors[]

  • Some of the episodes shows that Tommy did not put the key into the Brachio Morpher properly.
