This article is about an evil Ranger team in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. |
The Mutant Rangers were a team of Evil Rangers who served as the main antagonists of the episode "Mighty Morphin' Mutants".
Overview
The Mutant Rangers were Rita's second team of Evil Power Rangers, after the Twin Man's Evil Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. Unlike the first team, who were created to ruin the Power Rangers' reputation, the Mutant Rangers were created with the specific purpose of overpowering and destroying the Power Rangers, and thus were a great deal stronger than their predecessors.
History
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
Rita saw Tommy struggling with his memory and getting chewed out for chronic lateness by Ms. Appleby and even Bulk and Skull. Realizing that Tommy was not perfect, she planned to create the Mutant Rangers to destroy the real Power Rangers. Six Putties were chosen for this role and they were trained by Goldar to fight like the Power Rangers in the quarry. However, only five of the Putties passed the test to achieve the Badges of Darkness, as the sixth Putty intended to become the Red Mutant Ranger proved inadequate, causing Goldar to revert it back into clay for Finster. Rita knew that the team still needed a leader however, and thus had Finster create Commander Crayfish to command them.
Rita surveyed her Mutant Rangers and had Goldar send the Pink and Green Mutant Rangers to Angel Grove Park as an advance guard where they then confronted Tommy and Kimberly when they were walking home from the Angel Grove Youth Center. Green was the first Mutant Ranger to attack, circling Tommy and referencing the events of "Green With Evil". He provoked Tommy into attacking but easily ducked his kicks and even absorbed many kicks in his side whilst managing to hold his own although Tommy soon turned the tables and jump kicked him down. Across the battlefield, Pink confronted and leered at her counterpart before they kicked and blocked one another three times before Pink told Kimberly that this was "kinda like fightin' in a mirror." After Green matched Tommy kick for kick, Tommy was impressed but Green kicked him down and warned him he was just a small part of what was to come before teleporting out. Once Green left, the Pink Mutant Ranger punched Kimberly off of the raised platform that they were fighting on and left as well whilst claiming that she would be back.
The Mutants later regrouped at Angel Grove Beach where they met with Commander Crayfish and he assumed command before the Power Rangers arrived (although Green was being held back as a reserve). Unintimidated, the real rangers morphed and engaged their respective mutant counterparts. Despite Kimberly claiming that they were useless, the Mutant Rangers flipped in and drew their Mutant Weapons, corrupted versions of the Power Weapons. Crayfish fought and wrestled Jason, Trini and Yellow clashed in the air and punched one another down through the air, Black and Zack tried to punch and kick one another, Billy defeated his Mutant Ranger counterpart with his bare hands, and Kimberly and Pink shot one another with their arrows. With even Tommy not proving a match for his Mutant Ranger counterpart, the Mutant Rangers formed the Mutant Power Blaster and blasted the real Rangers, who survived and were forced to retreat. Unfortunately for the Evil Rangers, the Power Rangers had upgraded versions of their regular Power Weapons and only Crayfish was able to put up an effective fight whilst his teammates were easily defeated. In desperation, the Mutant Rangers formed the Mutant Blaster whilst the Power Rangers formed their Power Blaster. In a Blaster vs. Blaster fight, the new weapons proved too much for Crayfish and the Mutant Rangers, outright destroying the females and knocking out the rest.
Rita then made Commander Crayfish and the male Mutant Rangers grow so the Rangers formed the Megazord and called upon the Dragonzord. Commander Crayfish fought the Megazord whilst the male Mutant Rangers all took on the Dragonzord in what quickly devolved into an all-out slug-fest. With them once again failing to find success, Commander Crayfish and the male Mutant Rangers and regrouped and decided to mix things up by forming a pyramid with Crayfish on top. This put him above the range of the Dragonzord's missiles and so, the Zords advanced to try and knock them over with brute strength. However, the male Mutant Rangers kicked back the Zords before Crayfish had Green blast them with his Pyro Blast. Unfortunately for the Mutant Rangers, the real Power Rangers formed the Ultrazord which scared the Commander Crayfish and he told his teammates to pull back. However, they were far too slow, enabling the Ultrazord to open fire and mow down all four, causing them to collapse to the ground in a large pile and explode.
The New Adventures of the Blue Senturion and Ninjor
In the Year 2205, a new group of Mutant Rangers (This time with a Red Mutant Ranger) were created by a new villain called Monsieur Muster who used them to steal artifacts from Power Ranger History.
The Mutant Rangers broke into a museum stealing an relic from it, the Mutant Rangers were then being pursued by the Blue Senturion and after being cornered in an alley the Mutant Rangers used an Invisiportal to escape. COMIC STORY- Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (Boom! Studios) Issue 15
The Mutant Rangers are next seen in a temple on Venus giving the relic to their new master (revealed to be Rita's Telescope). After handing him the telescope the Mutant Rangers were rewarded by their master by first being sliced up and given new badges of darkness which turned them into Mutant Ranger versions of the Turbo Rangers. The Mutant Rangers appeared in a desert (while Ninjor and the Blue Senturion were arguing) and began to dig and found what they were looking for being the Red Battlezord and planned to "Take a Joyride" before taking it to Monsieur Muster on Venus. The Mutant Rangers eventually encountered Blue Senturion in the Robo Racer and Ninjor in Battle Mode and used the Zord to fight the duo, at first the Red Battlezord landed a punch on both but was eventually beaten by the combined teamwork of Ninjor and the Robo Racer which also lead to the destruction of the Mutant Rangers. Powers and Abilities
Powers
Each Mutant Ranger seemingly possesses the same powers and skills as their copied Power Ranger, including their weapon skills.
Abilities
The Mutant Rangers were able to fight their original counterparts to a draw, but seemed to possess no abilities the originals did not.
Weaknesses
Originally the Mutant Rangers had no exploitable weaknesses while fighting the Power Rangers, but found themselves at a disadvantage after the Rangers' weapons had been strengthened by Zordon.

Notes
- The weapons used by the Mutant Rangers are the untransformed versions of their counterparts' weapons from Zyuranger, with Commander Crayfish using the untransformed version of the Ryugeki Sword. The Green Mutant Ranger does not use a generic version of the Dragon Dagger as no such design existed in Zyuranger, instead being armed with the Sword of Darkness. The Mutant Rangers are not armed with Blade Blasters.
- The Mutant Rangers' Power Blaster was assembled in the same manner as the original, but using the untransformed versions of the Zyurangers' weapons. Ironically, these untransformed versions were simple metal weapons and possessed no actual means of firing energy in said form. Due to this, the Mutant Power Dagger and Mutant Power Lance are assembled with the bladed-ends facing forward instead of backwards.
- Due to the makeshift nature of the weapon, the Mutant Power Blaster prop is visibly held together using clamps and wiring.

Behind the Scenes
Portrayal
- Commander Crayfish was voiced by the late Tom Wyner.
- Green Mutant Ranger was voiced by the late Jason David Frank.
- Black Mutant Ranger is voiced by Walter Jones.
- Pink Mutant Ranger is voiced by Amy Jo Johnson.
- Blue Mutant Ranger is voiced by David Yost.
- Yellow Mutant Ranger was voiced by the late Thuy Trang.
Design
- The Mutant Rangers are identical to their Ranger counterpart's designs with some exceptions such as the design of their gloves, belts and boots being those of the Putty Patrollers. Additionally, the Green Mutant Ranger has the original's Dragon Shield and armbands, but not the golden cuffs along the glove and boot hems.
- As the Mutant Ranger costumes were modified versions of their primary costumes, the Green Mutant Ranger's Dragon Shield and armbands were made of loose fabric compared to the foam material of the version seen in Zyuranger and Zyu2 footage.
- The Mutant Rangers morph and pose is the same as the Zyurangers but using the Badges of Darkness instead of the normal Dino Bucklers.
- None of the Mutant Rangers' weapons were ever named on-screen. Their names come solely from both the name of the team and those of the actual Power Rangers.
Etymology

Notes
- Unlike the Twin Man's Evil Power Rangers, who were merely disguised Putties, the Mutant Rangers are Putties physically transformed by their Badges of Darkness into actual Power Rangers. It is never explained how Rita gained the ability to produce the Badge of Darkness, or if it had any sort of connection to the Morphin Grid or was a mere imitation of equal power.
- The male Mutant Rangers were the last monsters, along with Commander Crayfish, to be destroyed by the original Ultrazord.
- The Mutant Rangers come from what is commonly referred to as Zyu2 footage, and were not seen in the original Zyuranger.
- With no Red Mutant Ranger, Commander Crayfish takes on the Red role not only in being the Mutants' leader, but he also mimics Jason's pre-battle pose during the Mutant Ranger roll call and wields a sword. The would-be Red Mutant Putty was a darker grey than most Putties.
- The Mutant Rangers are voiced by their counterparts' actors with a more sinister tone.
- The Mutant Rangers have two different morphing sequences. The first one, made using American footage, involves placing the Badge of Darkness over their belts, which transforms them in a manner similar to how the Power Rangers de-morphed in Green with Evil Part V: Breaking the Spell. Their second Morphing sequence sourced from Zyu2 footage mimics the Zyuranger transformation sequence, involving thrusting their Badges of Darkness forward and spinning them 180 degrees, after which the gems on the badges glow before morphing the Putties.
- The Mutant Ranger's Power Blaster was assembled in the same manner as the original, but using the untransformed versions of the Zyuranger's weapons. Ironically, these untransformed versions were simple metal weapons and possessed no actual means of firing energy in said form.
- The Mutant Rangers appear in the Boom! Studios comics with a Red Mutant Ranger. This version of the team is armed with Blade Blasters on their belts, unlike the original version.
- The Badges of Darkness are based on the Putties pentagram design, although the morphing sequence of the Mutant Rangers omits that design.
