Biology[]
Physiology[]
Palkia is a very large, bipedal Water/Dragon Pokémon. The majority of its body has a light pink-gray-white coloring with linear sections on its body being purple. Its arms and shoulders are covered by large, armored plates, and each hand holds five nails. The round plates on its shoulders each have a large pearl in the center, representing its affiliation to Pearl. On Palkia's back are wings, which are seemingly not used for flight, as Palkia does Levitate.
Palkia, along with Dialga and Giratina, was created by Arceus when it hatched from its egg. Palkia was tasked to make the universe along with Dialga and Giratina and create space.
Special abilities[]
Referred to as the Spatial Pokémon, Palkia has the ability to distort space, creating ways for it to live and travel in a different dimension. Palkia also has the power to create new dimensions. It is said that Palkia and Dialga were never supposed to meet. Since Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Palkia has the ability to change into its Origin Forme through the power of the Lustrous Globe.

Appearances[]
Core series[]
Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version[]

Palkia being encountered in Pokémon Pearl Version
In Pokémon Pearl Version, at Spear Pillar, Cyrus uses the Red Chain he crafted from the powers of the Lake Guardians—Uxie, Azelf, and Mesprit—to call up and control Palkia, whom Cyrus wants to use to remake the world in his liking. After defeating Cyrus, the player can battle Palkia, who is level 47, and have a chance to catch it. Even if Palkia is defeated, the player has the option to encounter it again after entering the Hall of Fame.
In Pokémon Pearl Version, a statue of Palkia is found in Eterna City. It is said to have been the centerpiece of many festivals in the Sinnoh region.
In Pokémon Diamond Version, the exact events with Palkia involve Dialga instead, as well as the statue in Eterna City. Palkia can still be registered into the Pokédex and/or traded from Pokémon Pearl Version.
Pokémon Platinum Version[]
In Pokémon Platinum Version, Cyrus uses both Palkia and Dialga to try and create his new world, but disturbs Giratina, who drags him into the Distortion World. After completing the location, the player can encounter Palkia at Spear Pillar with the Lustrous Orb in their possession, and likewise Dialga if they have the Adamant Orb. Palkia is now level 70 when encountered.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus[]
In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Palkia's Origin Forme appears for the first time, like Dialga's.
Spinoffs[]
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series[]
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness[]
In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness, after the player has completed The Nightmare, they and their partner Pokémon return to their Rescue Team Camp, but as they are sleeping, the ground begins to shake, a blinding light appears for a split second, then clears, revealing Palkia. Palkia takes both the player and their partner to Spacial Rift and pushes them off of a cliff at 40,000 feet, but both manage to survive the fall nonetheless.
The player and their partner face Palkia at the end, in Spacial Rift Bottom. The battle is exceptionally challenging for Fire-type Pokémon. Once Palkia is defeated, he becomes trapped in a nightmare, just as Azurill has, and the player and their partner enter inside. As soon as Cresselia prepares to destroy them, another Cresselia appears, and the player, their partner, and Palkia look back and forth a few times in confusion. The second Cresselia blasts light at the other one, revealing it to be a Darkrai, and after the final battle against Darkrai, Palkia thwarts its escape attempt using Spacial Rend to shatter the dimensional hole as revenge for using him.
Palkia is a male in the game, even though it is normally genderless.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky[]
In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, Palkia retains the same role as in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness.
Pokémon Ranger series[]
Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia[]
In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, Palkia appears in Hippowdown Temple if the player has downloaded the "Palkia in Haruba Desert!?" mission from Ranger Net. Its presence causes disruption in space-time, warping humans, Pokémon, and objects around. Palkia uses Spacial Rend in battle to alter
Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs[]
In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, like the previous game, Palkia is encountered in the Sky Fortress exclusively in the "Pledge to Arceus" mission of Ranger Net, along with Dialga and Giratina.
Crossover appearances[]
Super Smash Bros. series[]
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which is Palkia's first appearance in the Super Smash Bros. series, it has a chance of appearing in the Spear Pillar stage if it has a purple tint. Once it appears, it has a multitude of abilities, including destroying sections of the stage, shooting a powerful beam either vertically or horizontally, decreasing the stage's gravity (making players jump higher and fall slower), tilting the camera so that it's askew, flipping it horizontally, and rotating it upside-down. After performing a couple of these abilities, the screen returns to normal, and Palkia then disappears.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[]

In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Palkia can be spawned from a Poké Ball or Master Ball and attacks by using its signature move, Spacial Rend, which involves it slashing across the screen and flipping the camera. This affects nothing other than the player's viewpoint. Coming into contact with it does minor damage. Eventually, the screen tilts back to normal and Palkia disappears.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Palkia returns as one of the Pokémon that can be summoned from a Poké Ball or Master Ball. It acts the same as before.
In other media[]
Anime[]

Palkia's first appearances were in the Diamond & Pearl series' Dragon Trilogy. It was first shown, along with Dialga and Darkrai, in The Rise of Darkrai, where it fought with Dialga and nearly destroyed Alamos Town. It was shown in a flashback in Giratina and the Sky Warrior, and finally, in Arceus and the Jewel of Life, alongside Dialga and Giratina, started a battle which awoke an ancient power. The Dragon Trio (Palkia, Dialga, and Giratina) seem to have equal power. Although Palkia fought Dialga in The Rise of Darkrai, they now seem to understand and accept each other, like when Palkia saved Dialga from the waterspout Arceus made, or when they fought alongside each other against Arceus.
Statues of Palkia have appeared in A Secret Sphere of Influence!, Journey to the Unown!, Losing Its Lustrous!, Double Team Turnover!, Steeling Peace of Mind!, Saving the World From Ruins!, and Bagged Then Tagged!. Palkia made its anime debut in The Battle Finale of Legend!, although a silhouette of Palkia appeared in All Dressed up with Somewhere to Go. This could possibly be the one from the dragon trio movies since there's only one Palkia in existence. Palkia also makes a cameo in the Together and Diamond and Pearl openings.
A Palkia also appeared in the 18th movie, Hoopa and the Clash of Ages, in which it is drawn into a battle between Hoopa and its dark side, Hoopa Unbound.

Trivia[]
- In the anime, Palkia's roar is a combination of the roars of two Godzilla monsters, Godzilla himself and King Ghidorah, plus Boga from Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. In the movie trailer, roars from Gamera were mixed.
- Palkia is the only bipedal member of Creation Trio, plus its rear limbs highly resemble human-like hands.
- Palkia is the only Pokémon (alongside with Whiscash) to actually avoid being captured by Master Ball. Unlikely to Whiscash who swallowed a Master Ball, Palkia dodged it with its hand - contacting it directly.
- Palkia is an unwillingly the worst encounter for Darkrai itself (though they never had an actual conflict between each other): in Movie 10, Palkia was a one to revive Darkrai who has been killed accidentally; in Mystery Dungeon series, Palkia was one to punish Darkrai in the end.
- Until Jaiden Animations mentioned the meme, Palkia was weak to Salamence, but then Google took note after the video and now Palkia isn't weak to Salamence, but instead dragon.
Origin[]
Palkia, along with Dialga, may be based on the Shinto legend of Izanami and Izanagi, who are said to have created one island with a spear, erected a pillar on it, and from there created the islands of Japan. Appearance-wise, Palkia is likely based after a European dragon combined with a pearl, being a water based precious stone. Its appearance may also be derived from the Plateosaurus or other bipedal dinosaurs such as the Oviraptor. How it is significant of the aspects of Space is shown through its Water typing, as it is the most similar medium which simulates both outer space and the metaphorical aspects of space, and whose consistency can manifest in various densities.
Etymology[]
The name "Palkia" is partly derived from the word "Paru", meaning pearl in Japanese. Since the Japanese language possesses only one liquid consonant, which is the equivalent of the English language /l/ and /r/, the "r" in paru can be used as an "l", creating Palkia when romanized.
