The Creation Trio (Japanese: クリエイション·トリオ, Hepburn: Kurieishon Torio), also known as the Primordial Chaos in Pokémon Legends: Arceus or the Dragons of Creation, is a trio of Legendary Pokémon consisting of Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina. They were introduced in Generation IV, and all of them are native to the Sinnoh region and its chronological predecessor, Hisui, in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

Description[]
All three Pokémon were the first to be created by Arceus, who is considered to be the trio master; this is so that the Creation Trio would craft the universe. When Dialga was born, time began; when Palkia was created, space expanded; and Giratina was formed to control antimatter. From this, each dragon both represents and has control over a certain element of physics: Dialga is associated with time; Palkia with space; and Giratina with antimatter. Dialga and Palkia often clash in battle, distorting space and time. Meanwhile, Giratina lives in the Distortion World, a realm separate from the main Pokémon World lacking the same laws of gravity.
All three Pokémon are version mascots, with Dialga and Palkia being the mascot of Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version, respectively, including each one's remake, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl. Meanwhile, Giratina is the mascot of the original games' upper version, Pokémon Platinum Version.
Physical appearance[]
Dialga and Palkia have some vague similarities with their appearance. Both have a dinosaur-like body with a tail with a pointed marking on it. Dialga has a back plate, while Palkia has two wing-like plates. Both also have three claws on their feet and a headdress with two spikes next to their mouths. Dialga wears a diamond on his chest, while Palkia has two pearls on his shoulder plates, with the gemstones being meant to represent their connection to Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version respectively.
There are traits with Giratina that are not consistent with Dialga and Palkia. Although it is the mascot of Pokémon Platinum Version, Giratina does not have a platinum gemstone anywhere on its body. Giratina's body looks closer to a dragon than a dinosaur.
Types[]
All three dragons have Dragon as their secondary type, but each one's primary type is different. In a similar manner, the following Tao Trio all have Dragon as their primary type. For the Creation Trio, their Dragon type could be a reference to their enormous power and ancient age, as well as a mechanical explanation of their natural might besides their designs.
Moves[]
Dialga's signature move is Roar of Time, Palkia's is Spacial Rend, and Giratina's is Shadow Force.
Abilities[]
All three members have Pressure as their Ability and Telepathy as their Hidden Ability. Of the Origin Formes, only Giratina's Ability is different, Levitate.
Stats[]
Dialga and Palkia excel in Special Attack and Attack, but differ in that Dialga has more Defense and HP while Palkia has more Special Defense and Speed. Meanwhile, Giratina has more HP than both Dialga and Palkia.
The three dragons each have the same base stat total, much like other Legendary Pokémon groups, except their base stat values are arranged differently. All three members have a base stat total of 680. Dialga and Palkia both share an Attack of 120 and a Special Attack of 150. In addition, Dialga has 30 points distributed between HP and Defense, while Palkia has 30 points distributed between Special Defense and Speed, giving them an advantage in both stats, respectively.
Giratina's base stats are more different in comparison to Dialga's and Palkia's. Giratina specializes in both Defense and Special Defense stats, which are 120, but both its base Attack and Special Attack are 100. Giratina's base HP is 150, the highest of the three members of the Creation Trio.
The base stats for each dragon is listed below:
Pokémon | HP | Attack | Defense | Special Attack | Special Defense | Speed | Total |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Dialga | 100 | 120 | 120 | 150 | 100 | 90 | 680 |
Palkia | 90 | 120 | 100 | 150 | 120 | 100 | 680 |
Giratina (Altered Forme) | 150 | 100 | 120 | 100 | 120 | 90 | 680 |
Alternate forms[]
The Creation Trio each have an Origin Forme, said to have been their original appearance in the Pokémon World. Giratina's Origin Forme was introduced in Pokémon Platinum Version, and only has this form in Distortion World; when it leave, Giratina changes into its Altered Forme to adapt to the change in gravity. Later, in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Origin Formes were added for Dialga and Palkia. All three dragons each retain the same two types while in their Origin Forme.
For its Origin Forme, Giratina has a snake-shaped body, with six elongated structures in place of its shadowy wings. On the other hand, Dialga and Palkia resemble Arceus more closely, and they have a ring on their torso that alludes to the elements they represent: Dialga's ring resembles the hands of a clock, referring to time, and Palkia's ring resembles a planetary model, referring to space. All three dragons have a face similar to Arceus's while in their Origin Forme, but the physical difference with Giratina's Origin Forme is more noticeable even when comparing it to Dialga's and Palkia's.
Each Pokémon can change from its Altered Forme to its Origin Forme and vice versa through the use of an orb. Dialga is connected to the Adamant Crystal and the Adamant Orb, Palkia is connected to the Lustrous Globe and the Lustrous Orb, and Giratina is connected to the Griseous Core or the Griseous Orb. Giratina's was introduced in Pokémon Platinum Version, but Dialga and Palkia's Origin Formes were not introduced until Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
In their Origin Formes, Dialga and Palkia each lose 20 points in their Attack value in favor of receiving an increase in their Special Defense and Speed by 20, respectively. Giratina's Origin Forme swaps the Attack stats of its Altered Forme so that both are decreased by 20 while increasing both Defense stats by 20. All three Origin Formes still have a base stat total of 680. The base stats of each is below:
Pokémon | HP | Attack | Defense | Special Attack | Special Defense | Speed | Total |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Dialga (Origin Forme) | 100 | 100 | 120 | 150 | 120 | 90 | 680 |
Palkia (Origin Forme) | 90 | 100 | 100 | 150 | 120 | 120 | 680 |
Giratina (Origin Forme) | 150 | 120 | 100 | 120 | 100 | 90 | 680 |

Core series[]
Generation IV and remakes[]
In Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version, Team Galactic leader Cyrus tries to use the Red Chain to summon Dialga in Pokémon Diamond Version and Palkia in Pokémon Pearl Version to the Spear Pillar, since he wants to use the Pokémon to recreate the universe. Following a Double Battle involving the player and their rival against Mars and Jupiter, the Legendary Pokémon starts to create a new dimension. This is stopped when the Lake Guardians appears, destroys the Red Chain enslaving Dialga or Palkia, and allowing them to recover from brainwashing. After the player battles Cyrus, they can battle and catch Dialga or Palkia in the respective game. If Dialga or Palkia is defeated instead of caught, it can be challenged again after completing the Pokémon League. Giratina does not have as large of a role in the plot of both games, but it can be still be encountered at the end of Turnback Cave. All three members of the Creation Trio retain their role in the remakes Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl.

A Giratina emerging from a dark shadow, as Dialga and Palkia are behind it, in Pokémon Platinum Version
In Pokémon Platinum Version, the plot is similar, but Giratina has a major role in the plot, more prominently than both Dialga and Palkia. Cyrus now uses two Red Chains to summon both Dialga and Palkia. Like before, the Lake Guardians gather again above the Spear Pillar, but their power is ineffective against both Dialga and Palkia. From here, the plot involving the Creation Trio is completely different than in Pokémon Diamond Version and Pokémon Pearl Version, as a black mass suddenly appears between Dialga and Palkia. A large, shadowy Giratina emerges from the hole and pulls Cyrus into the Distorted World. The player and Cynthia then both go to enter the Distorted World. After defeating Cyrus at the end of Disorted World, the player can battle Giratina. If Giratina is defeated here, the player can later encounter it in Turnback Cave, like in the previous paired. As for Dialga and Palkia, the player can later capture them at Spear Pillar if they have the Adamant Orb and Lustrous Orb, respectively, provided they have also entered the Hall of Fame and had spoken to Cynthia's grandmother in Celestic Town. If the player has both orbs, Dialga appears first, then Palkia when they re-enter the Spear Pillar.
Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina are caught at level 47 in Pokémon Diamond Version, Pokémon Pearl Version, and Pokémon Platinum Version, respectively. The former two games are the first time in which it is possible to catch a Legendary Pokémon with a level number not divisible by five.
Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire[]
In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, if the player has all three Lake Guardians in their party—Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf—a Dimensional Rift appears, containing Palkia in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Dialga in Pokémon Alpha Sapphire. If both Dialga and Palkia are in the player's team in either game, another Dimensional Rift appears, from which Giratina can be encountered. All three members of the Creation Trio are level 50.
Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon[]
In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon, the Creation Trio can be encountered in the Ultra Space Wilds, accessible through various warp holes, although Dialga and Palkia are both version-exclusive Pokémon. Dialga appears in Pokémon Ultra Sun only, where it can be encountered in the Rocky World through a green warp hole, while Palkia appears in Pokémon Ultra Moon only, where it can be encountered in the Cave World through yellow warp holes. Similarly to Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, Giratina can be encountered if the player has both Dialga and Palkia on their team, but this time from entering a yellow warp hole to the Cave World. All three members of the Creation Trio are at level 60, slightly stronger than in the previous paired games.
Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield[]
In Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield Expansion Pass, each member of the Creation Trio can sometimes be fought as the final boss at the end of Max Lair in Dynamax Adventure. However, Dialga appears only in Pokémon Sword and Palkia likewise in Pokémon Shield, but Giratina appears in both games. All three Pokémon are level 70.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus[]
In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the Creation Trio has a major role in the game's plot. In Mission 13: "Disaster Looming," as the space-time distortion becomes increasingly worse, the player must choose either Irida or Adaman as their partner for Palkia or Dialga to appear in the Temple of Sinnoh during Mission 17: "Atop Mount Coronet," respectively. Meanwhile, in Mission 18: "The Counterpart," the other dragon is encountered and has to be caught in an Origin Ball.
After all of Arceus' plates been collected in the post-game and Volo is defeated in a final battle on the Spear Pillar, where both forms of Giratina are used by him, Giratina can be found in the Turnback Cave. Both Dialga and Palkia also appear here, but their form differs depending on if Adaman or Irida was selected as their partner: If Adaman had been chosen, Dialga appears in its regular form and Palkia in its Origin Forme, and vice versa if Irida had been chosen. Giratina is level 70 but the latter two are level 65 each.
The player receives the Griseous Core after defeating Giratina, allowing it to become its Origin Forme. The Adamant Crystal and Lustrous Globe similarly allow Dialga and Palkia to become their Origin Formes, respectively, but to obtain them, the player must win in battle against Adaman or Iridia in the homes of their respective clans during the post-game.
Anime[]
The Creation Trio has almost never appeared in any regular episodes, with their most notable appearances being in three films in a row, all having a connected storyline: Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai, Pokémon: Giratina & the Sky Warrior, and Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life. The Creation Trio is the only group of Legendary Pokémon to be featured in three films in a row.
Films[]
Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai involves Dialga and Palkia fighting, although Giratina does not make an appearance. Both Dialga and Palkia can be calmed when Oración plays.
In Pokémon: Giratina & the Sky Warrior, Giratina appears alongside the other two. It is shown that if Dialga and Palkia use their two powerful attacks in the space-time rift, a cataclysm will be unleashed between their dimensions to wreak havoc on both the Pokémon World and the Distortion World. When Dialga and Palkia fight, the Distortion World gets ruined, angering Giratina and prompting it to leave the Distortion World to search for Dialga and Palkia and fight two for ruining its home.
In Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life, although Ash is able to solve the conflict between Giratina and Dialga, Arceus becomes the catalyst of a new problem: its desire to erase the entire world, due to having been betrayed in the past.
Trivia[]
- All three dragons have an "a" at the end of their names.
- Palkia is the only member of the Creation Trio to not have a unique type combination in Generation IV, when it was introduced.
Origin[]
The concepts of the three Creation Trio are based on recurring themes in physics: Dialga and Palkia in the conception of space-time and Giratina in antimatter. In addition, the primary types of each dragon references the three fundamental states of matter: solid (Dialga's Steel type), liquid (Palkia's Water type), and gas (Giratina's Ghost type).
