This Near Pure Evil was headlined on April 2022.

NOTE: This page is only about the Green Goblin persona, as his other half, Norman Osborn, was not voted near pure evil. Thus, only info about his Green Goblin persona should be put here.

“ Here's the real truth: there are eight million people in this city and those teeming masses exist for the sole purpose of lifting the few exceptional people onto their shoulders. You, me, we're exceptional. I could squash you like a bug right now, but I'm offering you a choice. Join me. Imagine what we could accomplish together. What we could create. Or we could destroy, cause the deaths of countless innocents in selfish battle again and again and again until we're both dead! Is that what you want? Think about it, "hero"! „
~ The Green Goblin's "generous proposal" to Spider-Man.
“ I've watched you from deep behind Norman's cowardly eyes. Struggling to have everything you want, while the world tries to make you choose. Gods don't have to choose. We take. „
~ The Green Goblin taunting the MCU's Spider-Man.
“ Peter, Peter, Peter. No good deed goes unpunished. You can thank me later. „
~ The Green Goblin to the MCU's Spider-Man before killing Aunt May.

The Green Goblin is the main antagonist of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy and the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home.

He is the thrill-seeking psychotic split personality of Norman Osborn, bent on a blood thirst for no one standing in his way in maintaining his position in power and continuing his horrible doings in New York City and against the titular hero Spider-Man, who is the only one that can stop him, becoming his arch-nemesis. He is ultimately killed while fighting Spider-Man, as he is impaled by his glider he attempted to use to kill Spider-Man. Despite his death, he'd continue to haunt Spider-Man for years.

Twenty-two years later, the Goblin is accidentally transported to a different universe through space and time by a spell performed by Doctor Strange, where he teams up with other supervillains who share the same fate. Not wanting to go back to a world where he's doomed to die, the Goblin decides to target this world's version of Spider-Man and his loved ones, becoming his third arch-nemesis and most hated enemy, as he killed the latter's aunt May Parker.

He was portrayed by Willem Dafoe.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • His presence in his host Norman Osborn's mind caused him tremendous psychological damage, forcing Norman to bear the guilt of all of the Green Goblin's crimes and the people he's murdered while in control of Norman's body, which shows that he only saw Norman as a vessel and nothing more.
  • Ultimately, his and Mysterio's actions had more impact in the trilogy and in the MCU as he is the one foe who kept haunting his universe's Spider-Man even after death. The Raimiverse's Spider-Man tried to prevent Norman's son Harry from going down the wrong path, but failed. This even continued in Spider-Man: No Way Home, as his grudge towards the Raimiverse's Peter served as one of the main reasons why he became one of the MCU Peter's most hated enemies, alongside Mysterio and even motivated the Raimiverse's Peter to create an anti-serum so that he could move on from Harry's death.
    • He managed to be an even bigger threat and left a similarly big impact for the MCU's Peter compared to what Mysterio did by killing Aunt May, bringing out the MCU's Peter's darker impulses, nearly leading him to commit cold-blooded murder and nearly causing him to lose Michelle Jones, had the Webbverse Spider-Man not saved her.
  • In Spider-Man: No Way Home, the distinction between Norman Osborn and the Green Goblin had been made clearer and that the Green Goblin was his own fully sapient being, thus had moral agency. The Green Goblin being his own thing and likewise having consciousness also confirmed he took Norman’s own will from him in some capacity.
  • Although he did have many comedic moments, they didn’t detract from his heinous crimes, as everyone still treated him as a dangerously serious threat. In fact, they only showed just how truly sadistic he is.
    • During the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, he was taken even more seriously than before and completely subverted all of his comedic moments after he brutally kills the MCU's Peter's Aunt May and pushing the latter over the edge to the point it almost led Peter down a dark path of becoming a killer.
  • His motivation for starting a feud with the MCU's Peter was because he couldn't stand his morality and good heart that the Raimiverse's Peter also had, showing that he would make every hero suffer out of sheer spite towards the concept of using great power for un-selfish reasons and the legacy that his old arch-nemesis the Raimiverse's Peter stood for.
  • He genuinely believed that having great power alone justified its use in selfish and destructive ways and hated the very concept of morality and heroism. In truth he represented everything that the nature of Spider-Man is against "with great power comes great responsibility".
  • In both Spider-Man and Spider-Man: No Way Home, he was obsessed with trying to make other superpowered individuals become just as bloodthirsty and evil as he is, like when he turned Electro, the Lizard, and Sandman against the MCU Spider-Man and killing his aunt May Parker (a feat that he shared with the Webbverse Green Goblin, who also manipulated Electro and killed Gwen Stacy out of spite against the Webbverse Spider-Man), showing just how evil he was to the point that the MCU Spider-Man would willingly try to murder him.
  • He viewed himself as a god and believed that his power alone was reasonable enough to be allowed to take whatever he wanted no matter what evil he needed to do whether it's murder or causing destruction. Thus, showing how demented and power-hungry he really was, further removing any moral agency issues previously believed he had whenever he talked to Norman which he revealed to the latter when they found themselves in the MCU.
    • As shown during his conversation with Spider-Man on the roof in which he stated he "chose [his] path" when comparing how he and Spider-Man chose to use their powers. This proves that he was aware of his actions and the harm they caused, and unlike Spider-Man he chose to use his powers to kill innocents because he saw himself as superior to everyone.
  • The fact that he made the MCU Spider-Man's life an even bigger hell not only because of his morality but also of his grudge towards the Raimiverse's Spider-Man showed how petty and demented he is. To the point that the MCU's Peter treated his curing of him more like a stabbing than an injection.

Spider-Man[]

  • He killed Dr. Mendel Stromm, a loyal fellow employee at Oscorp for the reason of him advising to bring the Performance Enhancer Serum Project completely back to formula.
  • He killed General Slocum and others at Quest Aerospace facility, bombing everyone there.
  • He killed the board members of Oscorp by throwing a bomb at the balcony they were standing on during the World Unity Festival, also endangering everyone who was attending the celebration (including Norman's own son Harry) and almost killing MJ before engaging in a fight against Spider-Man when he came to stop him.
    • Although to be fair, it can be argued that the board members deserved it for betraying Norman and forcing him out of his own company so they could make money from a new deal with Quest Aerospace.
  • He taunted Norman over the deaths of the board members of Oscorp, stating they both killed them even though the Goblin was in control.
  • He gleefully attacked the Daily Bugle and viciously interrogated J. Jonah Jameson to get the photographer who takes pictures of Spider-Man, likely going to murder the photographer if he succeeded.
    • Even though Jameson refused to tell him who the photographer was, the Green Goblin was likely going to kill most if not everyone in the Bugle. When Spider-Man came to stop him, he blasted sleep gas at him and almost caused him to fall to his death. Though the Green Goblin ends up saving him, he only did so for pragmatic reasons.
  • He tried to manipulate Spider-Man into joining him, so they could use their powers together to "accomplish" and "create". Judging from the Green Goblin's dialogue stating that the mass majority of the people of New York sole purpose is to lift powerful people such as him and Spider-Man on their shoulders, it was likely that he planned to create a dark order of New York where he would reign supreme over non-powered individuals and reap chaos non-stop throughout New York.
  • He destroyed a building by setting it ablaze, thus endangering many lives (including a baby) just so he could get a reply from Spider-Man about if he accepted his proposal in joining him. When he refused, he developed a dark and twisted obsession with destroying him and attempted to murder him right then and there.
  • In the grand scheme of things his hatred and anger towards Spider-Man's refusal of his "friendship" is petty and unjustified.
  • After learning that Peter was Spider-Man, he manipulated Norman into abandoning any attachment he had to Peter and drove him to attack his loved ones in order to torment him with loss and pain.
  • He blew up Peter's house, mockingly telling Aunt May to finish her prayer while sadistically mocking and laughing at her fear, forcing Aunt May to hospital and leaving her traumatized from the experience for a while.
  • He forced Spider-Man to choose between saving either a group of children or Mary Jane from falling to their death off the Queensboro Bridge, nearly killing all of them in the process. Showing that he had no qualms with murdering children. He even proudly claimed that himself as a lunatic offering Spider-Man a sadistic choice.
  • He nearly killed Spider-Man with his gilder while he was holding up Mary Jane and the children, only for New York civilians to interfere.
  • He sadistically and brutally attacked and beat up Spider-Man and informed him that after he was done killing him, he was going to kill MJ "nice and slow" just for making him angry.
  • In his final moments, he unfairly tried to kill Spider-Man by impaling him with his glider, which backfired when Spider-Man jumped out of the way and ended up getting the Goblin/Norman himself killed.

Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3[]

  • He indirectly drove Harry into villainy from beyond the grave, causing him to become the New Goblin which resulted in his death at the hands of Venom.

Spider-Man: No Way Home[]

  • When he arrived in the MCU, he used one of his pumpkin bombs to destroy the bridge that Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus were on, which also held civilians and occupied vehicles, too.
  • Upon seeing the MCU Spider-Man, he attempted to attack him on sight before Doctor Strange used his sling ring portal to take him away from the site.
  • He told Norman that he plans to conquer the MCU.
  • He convinced Electro, the Lizard, and Sandman to return to villainy and turn against Spider-Man, even though this would ruin their chances at returning to their respective universes alive and cured from their mutated conditions, stating that their powers were not curses but rather gifts and as so-called "gods" that they could take whatever they wanted. However, this was done for his own twisted power-hungry delusions not out of any actual care for any of them.
  • He sadistically strangled the MCU Spider-Man while taunting him that his weakness is morality and that it's choking him.
  • He murdered the MCU May in order to force the MCU Spider-Man into a dark path where he would break his no-kill rule for the sake of avenging her death out of anger and vengeance all the while having the gall to declare that he would "Thank him later". And in turn dragging him to his long blood feud with the Raimiverse Spider-Man, even though the MCU Spider-Man had nothing to do with the life of the latter.
  • While fleeing the apartment, he threw several pumpkin bombs at the nearby police cars, destroying them and endangering the lives of the police officers and The Daily Bugle news reporters present there.
  • He foiled Doctor Strange's plan to prevent every person in the Multiverse who knew that Peter was Spider-Man from entering the MCU, which would cause disastrous effects on the multiverse and endanger an infinite number of lives throughout existence, by detonating a Pumpkin Bomb in the Machina de Kadavus box that Strange used to contain the corrupted spell, while cutting off one of the tentacles from a redeemed Doctor Octopus when he tried to stop him from escaping, causing him physical pain.
  • After blowing up the scaffolding, he prevented the MCU Spider-Man from saving MJ, which caused her to almost fall to her death before she was saved by The Amazing Spider-Man Spider-Man, to cause him more emotional trauma and pain.
  • Upon learning that the MCU Spider-Man wanted to kill him out of revenge for killing Aunt May, he became sickeningly joyful by the fact that he was able to drive a version of Spider-Man over the edge to the point where he wanted to kill.
  • He stabbed the Raimiverse Spider-Man in the back as revenge for his death, even after he protected him from the MCU Spider-Man, who attempted to avenge his aunt's death, which shows how ungrateful and ruthless he is.
  • In easily one of his cruelest moments before his death, he sickeningly taunted the MCU Spider-Man that his aunt's death was his fault despite claiming he "struck the blow". Further cementing how deep his hatred for any version of Spider-Man was and just how sadistic he truly was to the point that he would make their lives miserable by killing and torment anyone close to them and then rub it in their faces, showing that he knew what he did was vile and that he enjoyed every little bit of it with no care for anyone else but himself and to satisfy his hatred towards the Raimiverse's Peter for refusing to join him which in his own eyes means he "Spat in his face".
  • Unlike the other villains in the film, his exorcism after he was stabbed in the neck with the Anti-Goblin serum by MCU Peter in far more rage, violence, and aggressiveness than before and in far more karma than before due to the anti-serum being made by the Peter from his universe who he tries spiting by making MCU Peter's life an even bigger hell, restoring Norman back to his normal self, was not played for any sympathy as he completely deserved it for what he did to everyone he murdered and tormented.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Since the MCU came into play, he failed its heinous standards since it's unclear whether he knew destroying the Machina de Kadavus would fracture the MCU or if he only thought that the device would send him to die in his own universe, as he did not acknowledge the dimensional tears in the sky after he destroyed the box. Also, it was not shown how bad his plan to conquer the MCU would be, causing him to rely on Fridge Logic.

Trivia[]

  • Initially, Norman Osborn was approved as Near Pure Evil along with the Green Goblin as it was deemed ambiguous if the two were actually separate entities in Spider-Man. However, in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it was confirmed that Green Goblin is indeed an entity completely separate from Norman, who in turn is absolutely terrified of the Goblin and simply wants to be free of him. Following this, Norman was cut from Near Pure Evil while the Goblin was proposed for Pure Evil only to be rejected as it was considered he failed the MCU's heinous standards, causing the Goblin to remain Near Pure Evil.
    • In spite of this, Willem Dafoe commented back in 2002 that he considered the Green Goblin as merely an aspect of Norman Osborn himself. However, Dafoe's feelings back then may have changed since his return as the character for the MCU.
  • In Harry's apartment in Spider-Man could be spotted a mug with the picture of a young Mao Zedong, one of (if not the evilest) the evilest genocidal and enslaving dictators in history, probably a gift from Norman taken in one of his journeys just like his collection of masks (since it's quite unlikely to say the least that these kind of items could be found on sale in America back then). This detail may be foreshadowing Norman's and/or Harry's respective evil and vengeful nature.
