Nathaniel Malick is the final antagonist of the TV series Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., appearing as a posthumous flashback character in Season 3 and one of the two main antagonists (alongside Sibyl) of Season 7.

In Season 3, he was portrayed by Joel Courtney, while in Season 7, he was portrayed by Thomas E. Sullivan.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Close to Being Pure Evil?[]

  • In 1976, He teams up with the Chronicoms who are alien robots from the future, their aim is to destroy everything and Nathaniel agrees.
  • Using his Hydra Connections, He obtained a Chronicom weapon and kidnaps both Daisy Johnson and Daniel Sousa. Nathaniel does this because he intends to steal Daisy’s powers.
  • He seeks out Daniel Whitehall and asks for detailed instructions related to his search on how to steal enhanced beings powers.
  • He drains Daisy’s blood and fluids in the same manner Dr. Whitehall does in the mainstream timeline to Jiaying, this puts Daisy into a coma and he injects her powers into himself.
  • He agrees to work with Sibyl, the leader of the Chronicoms and she gives him the ability to control the future.
  • While this may be seen as a mitigating factor, it certainly isn’t. Nathaniel stops Kora from shooting herself, but he plays her like a fiddle and turns her evil and he uses her for her powers, Nathaniel plays on Kora’s struggles at the afterlife and convinces her to join him.
  • He, along with Kora and his men invade Afterlife and take the Inhumans hostage with the aim to steal their powers like he did to Daisy.
  • He convinces Kora that Afterlife was a prison and he turns her against her mother, once Jiaying has escaped with the help of Gordon, Nathaniel tells Kora everyone was "prisoners", further adding that he will redistribute a new world order through anarchy. He then taught her how to use her powers and said her little sister will be impressed.
  • Wanting to continue upsetting the timeline through chaos, Nathaniel recruited multiple criminals that S.H.I.E.L.D. killed in their futures and altered their fates.
  • He seeks out SHIELD nemesis John Garrett while he’s still young and shows him his future, thus corrupting Garrett into the man he would become early and he recruits him.
  • To show John Garrett that powers can be transferred, he takes Li’s power and transfers it to one of his men and he has Kora execute Li to put him out of his misery. While this may seem an act of mercy, Nathaniel seemed to enjoy his pain a lot.
  • He used the time stream again this time predicting where Gordon would drop Coulson off. He then explains his goals to Coulson, a new world order through anarchy with help from the Chronicoms.
  • While Li wasn’t the most sympathetic of victims, Nathaniel does the same to Gordon causing him immense pain, Gordon at this point is in his late teens to early 20’s and didn’t deserve it at all, this eventually results in Gordon sacrificing himself to teleport Coulson away.
  • He gives Gordon’s powers to John Garrett, a very dangerous man, and he sends him to the lighthouse to kidnap Jemma Simmons.
  • When Nathaniel confronts Daisy and Jiaying. He taunts them telling them exactly how their futures are going to play out, rubbing it in that Jiaying gets tortured, has her blood removed by Daniel Whitehall, becomes evil and that she lost Daisy meaning she grew up alone and when they met, they were on separate sides, he continues saying Jiaying is about to kill Daisy but Jiaying is then killed by her husband. Daisy attacks him in retaliation, Malick blasts her with a stronger quake and when he moves to finish her, Jiaying tries to intervene and he snaps her neck, before mocking that her powers couldn’t save her.
  • He puts Jemma Simmons into a machine which will force her to unlock a memory she doesn’t want to. That being the Location of Leo Fitz and if it’s revealed, the Chronicoms will kill him, thus ensuring their victory.
  • When He realizes how strong the implant is, he starts beating up Jemma to force her to answer.
  • After finding out Deke Shaw, Jemma’s future grandson is a stowaway on his ship, Nathaniel starts torturing him to force Jemma to reveal Fitz’s location, ending with him knocking Shaw out.
  • Using a machine, Malick enters Jemma’s private memories in an attempt to discover Fitz’s location.
  • When an underling calls Malick ‘sir’, he executes him and furiously screams not to call him sir.
  • He calls for Chronicom reinforcements and orders them to enact Project Insight, this results in billions of deaths of innocent people and the destruction of SHIELD, meaning the earth is now unguarded against himself and the Chronicoms.
  • Knowing that the Lighthouse will be immune to any attack, he orders Garrett to teleport in and plant Bombs inside which will blow the base up, when Garrett is trapped, Malick abandons him.
  • When Kora comes to her senses and turns against Malick, he knocks her out and intends to drain her blood and fluids and take her powers like he has done with many others, proving he never cared about her and used her as a tool.
  • In their final battle, Malick gloats that he’s seen all Daisy’s battles and he is ‘honored’ to be her last opponent, and he used the logic that Daisy needed saving from her mother while Nathaniel killed her easily. Eventually to take Malick out, Daisy sacrifices herself and is revived by a now redeemed Kora.
  • Despite the atrocious standard that the MCU has, Malick is still heinous enough, while he does fail the heinous standard to Sybil, he goes along with her plans and takes loads of glee and delight in the pain he causes. Daniel Whitehall only drains one persons powers, Malick does it to 3 people, and Whitehall is seen as the most detestable villain in agents of shield.

What Prevents Him from Being Pure Evil?[]

  • Malick appears to care about his father, Wilfried Malick, as shown when he is torturing Deke and Simmons, he knocks deke out and says ‘that’s for my dad’ as Deke was the man who executed him. But wether the care is genuine or not isn’t confirmed, it didn’t stop Nathaniel from talking ill of his father numerous times.
