Owl's Well That Ends Well is the twenty-fourth episode of the first season of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. In this episode, Spike grows jealous when Twilight Sparkle befriends an owl and appoints it as a second personal assistant. The title of the episode is a play on the phrase "all's well that ends well."
Development[]
Episode writer Cindy Morrow stated that the working title for the episode was Hoo Goes There.[2]
Summary[]
The number one assistant[]
One evening at the Golden Oak Library, Twilight Sparkle and Spike prepare for a picnic to watch the centennial meteor shower. Twilight asks Spike to fetch a book on astronomy from another room, though when he picks it up, the dusty cover causes him to sneeze fire that consumes the book pages. Afraid to reveal what happened just as Twilight calls him her "number one assistant", Spike replaces the book on the shelf.
Spike convinces Twilight that the book is missing as they approach the picnic area. After they set up next to the rest of the Mane Six, Rarity gives Spike a bow tie laden with jewels for preparing the refreshments. The ponies enjoy the meteor shower and the food, though Spike ends up falling asleep in the punch bowl.
The owl[]
Back at the library, Twilight Sparkle tucks Spike into bed and begins to write about comets on a scroll of parchment before getting distracted by creaking noises outside. In the process of opening windows to check the noise, a gust of wind picks up the parchment and carries it off into the night. As Twilight wonders what to do, an owl enters through the window with her scroll and drops it on the table. Twilight thanks the owl, who accepts her invitation to stay inside and keep her company while she works.
Spike wakes up the next morning and panics when he realizes he overslept, though Twilight informs him that his chores have been taken care of by the "new junior assistant" Owlowiscious, the owl that Twilight encountered the night before. Trying to hide some concern, Spike follows Twilight's suggestion and introduces himself to the owl, who responds only with hoots. After some miscommunication, Spike concludes that Owlowiscious is trying to replace him as Twilight's assistant and determines to prove himself superior.
- "That bird is out for my job. He wants to be number one. I'll prove to Twilight that I deserve to be number one, not Freaky Feathers over there."
- — Spike
Spike grows jealous[]
Sometime later, Spike looks on jealously from an open library window as the Mane Six admire Owlowiscious outside. Seeing Rarity gift the owl a bejeweled bow tie identical to the one he received earlier, Spike storms off in a huff, all the more convinced that "they" are trying to replace him. He tries to step up his game in assisting Twilight but is repeatedly outdone by Owlowiscious, culminating in a fruitless search for a quill that causes him to fall asleep from exhaustion on the library stairwell.
Spike's nap is interrupted when Twilight confronts him about the charred astronomy book, which Owlowiscious discovered in its proper place contrary to Spike's claim. After Twilight expresses her disappointment, Spike accuses Owlowiscious of setting him up and remarks that "two can play that game" before leaving the library.
Outside, Spike sees a mouse scurrying around and devises a plan to frame Owlowiscious. He steals Opalescence's toy mouse from the Carousel Boutique and returns to the library, where he tears open the toy and covers it with ketchup and pillow feathers. Twilight catches him in the act, however, leading her to express further disappointment and remark how his behavior does not reflect the Spike she knows and loves.
Running away[]
Misinterpreting Twilight's reprimand as hate, Spike runs away to the Everfree Forest and takes shelter inside a cave, where he discovers a trove of gemstones. He eats his fill of the stash, whereupon an enormous green dragon enters and demands to know why his gems have been eaten. Spike fails to assuage the dragon, though just when he ends up cornered, Owlowiscious flies in and creates a distraction long enough for Spike to get away. The two join Twilight at the cave entrance, and together they escape into the evening darkness with the help of Owlowiscious' night vision.
As the group arrive safely outside the forest, Spike reveals his assumption that he wasn't needed or loved anymore. Twilight assures him that he is still her number one assistant and friend and explains that Owlowiscious was just there to help at night rather than replace him. She apologizes for not being sensitive enough to Spike's feelings, and he in turn apologizes to both of them for his jealous behavior.
Back at the library, Twilight has Spike take charge of producing a report for Princess Celestia about what happened. He writes how he learned that lies and jealousy will get you nowhere in friendship, and how there's plenty of love for every friend to share. Before he can finish the report, however, he suddenly falls asleep.
Quotes[]
- For more quotes, see the episode's transcript.
- Twilight Sparkle: And that is why you are my number one assistant.
- Spike: I'm sorry. I didn't hear you.
- Twilight Sparkle: That is why you are my number one assistant.
- Spike: Missed that! Huh?
- Twilight Sparkle: I said... [giggle] Come on, let's get going.
- Rarity: Spike, you are such a little star that I had to make a little bow tie for you.
- Spike: Gosh, you guys are embarrassing me. Stop it. ...Twilight, your turn.
- Spike: Uhh, hi there. I'm Spike. I'm sure Twilight has told you all about me.
- Owlowiscious: Hoo?
- Spike: Uhh, Spike. You know, assistant number one?
- Owlowiscious: Hoo?
- Spike: I'm Spike! And who are you? What are you?
- Owlowiscious: Hoo.
- Spike: Who?
- Owlowiscious: Hoo!
- Spike: I thought your name was Owlowiscious!
- Owlowiscious: Hoo?
- Spike: Okay, "Hoo", Owlowiscious, whatever! I'm Spike, okay?
- Owlowiscious: Hoo?
- Twilight Sparkle: Replace him? Hah! That's crazy! Spike knows he can't be replaced.
- Spike: They're trying to replace me! I better step it up and make sure that Twilight and Owlowiscious know that I'm still number one!
- Spike: But the store is called "Quills and Sofas"! You only sell two things!
- Davenport: Sorry, junior. All outta quills until Monday... Need a sofa?
- Pinkie Pie: I swore I had one here somewhere. Ah, here it is! A quince!
- Spike: Not a quince. A quill!
- Pinkie Pie: Right. A quail? A quilt! A quesadilla? Aha! A quiche!
- Spike: Not a quiche. A quill!
- Pinkie Pie: Nope. Sorry. All outta quills.
- Spike: You set me up! Well, two can play that game!
- Owlowiscious: Hoo?
- Spike: Not who! TWO!
- Spike: So lifelike. And when Twilight discovers it shredded up on her floor, she'll think mouse-eating Owlowiscious is to blame. And I'll be number one... again! Muhahaha!
