Hearts and Hooves Day is the seventeenth episode of the second season of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic and the forty-third episode overall. In this episode, the Cutie Mark Crusaders try to match Cheerilee with a "very special somepony" for Hearts and Hooves Day, though the potion they use to do so ends up creating an unexpected problem.
The Hearts and Hooves Day holiday featured in this episode is analogous to Valentine's Day.
Development and airing[]
The episode was released on iTunes two days prior to its scheduled television debut with the erroneous air-date of "Feb 11, 2011" and was removed within a few hours.[3]
A Flash game called "Hearts and Hooves Day Puzzles" was made available on Hasbro.com ten days before the episode's scheduled airing. The puzzles include several images of Big McIntosh, Cheerilee, and the Cutie Mark Crusaders, set at a picnic, at the treehouse, and at other locations. A few of the images feature two small glasses filled with a hot-pink drink, and one of the images features Cheerilee in a nuptial veil.
Summary[]
Finding a special somepony[]
During a Hearts and Hooves Day celebration at the Ponyville Schoolhouse, the Cutie Mark Crusaders present Cheerilee with a giant heart-shaped card to show their appreciation. Sweetie Belle presumes that Cheerilee will receive gifts from her "very special somepony", though when she reveals that she doesn't have one, the Crusaders determine to find her a partner before the end of the day. In a song, the girls consider stallions across town before landing on Big McIntosh as the best match.
When Apple Bloom remarks that her brother may be too shy to propose a relationship, Sweetie Belle suggests that they create a romantic setting so that Cheerilee asks him instead. The Crusaders set up a picturesque picnic under a gazebo and lure Cheerilee over on the premise of helping them identify a nearby tree. Big McIntosh arrives moments later expecting to repair the gazebo, though Apple Bloom tells him it's been taken care of and rushes off with Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo to observe from a distant bush. To their dismay, however, Cheerilee and Big McIntosh engage in only brief small talk before heading off in separate directions.
The love potion[]
The girls wander through town discussing what went wrong with their plan when they accidentally collide with Twilight Sparkle, who had been distracted reading a book about Hearts and Hooves Day. Twilight cites how the holiday got its start because of a love potion, and upon mention that the book includes the recipe, the girls convince her to let them borrow it. After gathering the listed ingredients, the Crusaders return to their clubhouse and produce two servings of the potion.
The Crusaders bring Cheerilee and Big McIntosh once more to the gazebo, this time to taste test a supposed punch recipe. After the girls retreat to a bush, Cheerilee tells Big Mac her suspicion that they want him to be her "special somepony", prompting the two to laugh before deciding to try the punch regardless. Upon drinking it, Cheerilee and Big McIntosh become suddenly enamored with each other and agree to be together. The girls emerge excitedly from the bush but soon realize that the pair are largely unresponsive to them and continually exchange sappy pet names as they stare into each other's eyes.
Realizing their mistake[]
At the clubhouse, the Crusaders consult the book again and learn that what they served was actually a love poison. They read that a prince once used the recipe to endear himself to a certain princess long ago, but that they became so lost in each other's eyes that they were unable to perform their royal duties. As Apple Bloom panics about Big McIntosh and Cheerilee not performing their duties, Sweetie Belle reads aloud that the curse will break if the affected ponies lose eye contact with each other for an hour.
The Crusaders find Cheerilee and Big McIntosh sharing a milkshake at Sugarcube Corner. Mrs. Cake remarks on the potential catering opportunity if the pair end up getting wed, giving Sweetie Belle the idea of keeping them apart for an hour by "helping" them prepare separately for a marriage. The Crusaders suggest getting married to Cheerilee and Big Mac, who agree to the idea and rush off to complete their preparations.
Breaking the spell[]
At the Carousel Boutique, Sweetie Belle hands Cheerilee several wedding dresses and takes her to the dressing room before barricading her inside. Apple Bloom tries to delay Big McIntosh at the jewelry store by finding fault in each gem presented to him, though when she takes a moment to ask Scootaloo how much time remains, Big Mac makes a hurried purchase and rushes out the door. After instructing Scootaloo to warn Sweetie Belle at the boutique, Apple Bloom attempts to slow her brother by harnessing him to various heavy objects but achieves limited success.
Big McIntosh approaches the boutique only to fall into a pit dug by Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo. Moments later, Cheerilee smashes through the front door of the boutique and runs toward the sound of Big Mac's voice. She bowls through the Cutie Mark Crusaders just as the town clock rings one hour since they left Sugarcube Corner, leaving Cheerilee and Big McIntosh returned to their normal selves and confused as to why they are in a pit. The Crusaders explain their failed effort to make them a couple and apologize for the ordeal, acknowledging that no one should try to force others into a relationship, no matter how good their intentions are.
While the Crusaders serve out their punishment by completing Big McIntosh's chores at Sweet Apple Acres, the former lovebirds approach and pretend to still be afflicted with the love poison, causing the girls to cry out in dismay.
Quotes[]
- For more quotes, see the episode's transcript.
- Cheerilee: Thank you so much, girls. I love it. I really do.
- Sweetie Belle: I'm sure it's nothing compared to the gifts you've gotten from your... very special somepony.
- Cheerilee: Oh, I don't have a very special somepony at the moment.
- Apple Bloom: Really?
- Cheerilee: So you three said you needed help identifying a tree you found here near the gazebo? ...That's an apple tree.
- Apple Bloom: Is it?
- Cheerilee: Big Mac...
- Big McIntosh: Eeyup?
- Cheerilee: You have something stuck in your teeth.
- Sweetie Belle: Aw, come on!
- Twilight Sparkle: I've just been reading the most fascinating book about Hearts and Hooves Day. Did you know that this holiday got its start because of a love potion?
- Sweetie Belle: Did you say... a love potion?
- Sweetie Belle: We made punch. We were gonna set up a stand and try to sell it but, heh, we needed some pony to taste-test it first.
- Apple Bloom: Yup.
- Sweetie Belle: We thought you two would be perfect together... to test it... together. So, ah, we'll just leave you two alone... together, to test it.
- Sweetie Belle: Maybe we added too much rainbow.
- Scootaloo: Or maybe not enough cloud.
- Sweetie Belle: Or maybe... uh-oh.
- Cheerilee: Girls, can you explain why I look like I'm getting married at the bottom of a pit?
