Owen Shaw was Deke Shaw's father and a member of the True Believers community. He was exiled to the surface of the Earth by Kasius for trying to promote the prophecy of people from the past arriving to save humanity. During his exile he was killed by his best friend, Samuel Voss.

Biography[]

Exile to Earth[]

Owen Shaw's wife was murdered by the Kree Watch, who enforced a harsh rule in the Lighthouse and hunted down the True Believers, who thought that S.H.I.E.L.D. agents would come from the past to rescue humanity. In response, Owen became convinced by the True Believers' ideology and sought to do his best to carry on the idea for the sake of his wife, determinedly continuing despite his son Deke's pleas. As a result, he was exiled onto the surface of the Earth, leaving his son Deke behind. Owen refused to give his son a shard of the Time Di'Alla which belonged to his wife and took it with him.

While the Kree Watch thought Owen would be devoured by Vrellnexians, he actually survived in the remnants of the Zephyr One.^[1] He remained in contact with Virgil, the only True Believer left in the Lighthouse.^[2]

Death[]

Shaw's best friend, Samuel Voss, was also exiled to Earth for also believing that S.H.I.E.L.D. agents would come from the past. However, they diverged about what to do next. Indeed, Shaw believed that the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents would provide the True Believers with a solution to end the Kree rule and save humanity, while Voss thought that the only solution was killing the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. In the end, an argument erupted and Voss felt forced to kill his best friend. According to Voss, however, Shaw intended to kill him as well with a knife and Voss only acted in defense.^[3]

Legacy[]

For a long time, Deke Shaw resented his father for having abandoned him without even leaving a memory of his wife. Still, Deke somehow adopted his father's idea of playing on the long game, although it led him to betray S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Daisy Johnson.^[2]

However, Deke eventually embraced Owen's belief and understood why Owen had fought for something which looked like an unreachable utopia. As a result, Deke was even willing to sacrifice himself so that the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents could return to their time.^[4]

Deke also confronted Samuel Voss about the murder of his father. He was left with the opportunity to avenge Owen's death, but Deke ultimately chose to spare Voss, despite Voss reminding him that Owen had taught him to play on the long game.^[3]

The death of Owen stayed with Deke even after choosing not to get revenge, as Deke later related to Freddy Malick after Malick mentioned his own father dying at a young age. The two bonded over this shared experience.^[5]

Equipment[]

• Time Di'Alla: Owen Shaw kept a shard of the Time Di'Alla which once belonged to his wife. He always had it with him after she died and refused to leave it to his son Deke when he was exiled to Earth. Owen brought the Time Di'Allas' shard into the Zephyr One, where it would be used to bring the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents from the past.
• Isochronus Cyclotron: Shaw built this device using schematics left by Leo Fitz. He then used it with a fragment of the Time Di'Alla to activate it and bring a team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents into year 2091.

• Lighthouse: Shaw used to be a resident of the Lighthouse until he was banished to the surface of the Earth with other True Believers. Due to his exile, he was forced to abandon his own son Deke in the Lighthouse.
