"I'm late, so late, I must make haste!"
—MIPS, Super Mario 64

MIPS is a yellow rabbit who first appears in Super Mario 64.

In Super Mario 64[]

MIPS lives in the basement of Princess Peach's Castle, where Mario can find him after collecting at least 15 Power Stars. When Mario approaches MIPS, he runs away, but if Mario catches MIPS, he is awarded a Power Star. MIPS reappears in the same location if Mario has collected at least 50 Power Stars, and Mario can catch MIPS again to earn another Power Star. MIPS does not return again after this.

In Super Mario 64 DS, MIPS does not reappear, although there are various of rabbits remodelled after MIPS, found through the castle inside and outside, and each of them give a key that unlocks a certain minigame.

In Mario Party 3[]

In Mario Party 3, several MIPS make a cameo appearances, being among the creatures found in the Woody Woods board.

Trivia[]

  • MIPS is named after the MIPS architecture. The NEC VR4300, a microprocessor derived from this, was the basis of the Nintendo 64's CPU.
  • MIPS's manner of speaking is a reference to the White Rabbit from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and many of his quotes are paraphrased versions of things said by this rabbit.
  • MIPS, along with Mario himself, were the first characters created for what would become Super Mario 64. He was originally used in early beta testing, but the programmers liked MIPS enough to keep him in the retail version.[1]
  • Though not stated in the game, an official Japanese guidebook says that MIPS is Peach's pet rabbit.[2]
  • A glitch involving MIPS is that when Mario picks up MIPS, goes near a door, and throws him at the door; 1 of 2 things might happen. Mario will be transported behind the door or Mario will be stuck in a wall.
  • In Super Mario 64 DS, two of Mario's, one of Yoshi's, and one of Wario's rabbits are found the same place as MIPS was in the original game.
