- This article is about the level from Super Mario 64. For the race course originally from Mario Kart DS, see Tick Tock Clock (Mario Kart DS).
Tick Tock Clock is a level in Super Mario 64 and its Nintendo DS remake Super Mario 64 DS. The level is based on the inside of a clock. Many of the obstacles in the level are parts that one may find in a real-life clock. The course's entrance also resembles a Grandfather Clock. This course is unique in the sense that the clock's speed can change depending on the big hand's position upon the clock being entered.
In the N64 version, this course came with several challenges however, in the DS remake, the course has been changed significantly due to several alterations to make the course easier. Such changes include adding more flooring at the bottom of the clock, the removal of the triangular platforms as well as the fog, adding new platforms, moving the top conveyor with the Thwomp into a small niche, and overall re-positioning several areas of the level.
In the Mario Kart series, there is a race course of the same name based specifically on the Super Mario 64 course. It made its first appearance in Mario Kart DS and returned as a Classic Course in both Mario Kart 8 and its Nintendo Switch port Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Speeds[]
If the player crosses the clock painting when it shows any of these times, the speed of the clock parts in the level will be the following:
- 12:00 = No Speed
- 3:00 = Slow Speed
- 6:00 = Random Speeds and Directions
- 9:00 = Fast Speed
Stars[]
Star 1: Roll into the Cage (N64)[]
When Mario first enters the clock go to the pendulum to the left there will be a rotating block quickly jump off of it take the path to a set of three rotating blocks then take another narrow path to the namesake cage. The star will be within the cage.
Star 1: Luigi in the Cage (DS)[]
When Mario enters, he must find the Luigi cap (alternately, play as Luigi), climb up the Clocktower and you will find a ? Block near the top, open it and obtain the Power Flower to turn transparent. Then, you should fall down through the ground and to the cage, which the character can enter easily now.
Star 2: The Pit and the Pendulums (N64)[]
For the 2nd star, Mario must climb the tower halfway and then venture past the Heave-Hos and other enemies and he will find an area with two swinging pendulums. After avoiding the pendulums there is a yellow ! Block that holds the 2nd star of Tick Tock Clock.

Star 2: The Pendulum Switch Star (DS)[]
This Star is in the same general location as "The Pit and the Pendulums" from the original. You must find the Star Switch (which is at the halfway point near the Heave-Ho's). Once pressed you should hurry in order to get the Star located near the pendulums before it disappears.
Star 3: Get a Hand[]
To get this Star, you may need to have the clock moving, climb up to the top and wait for the hands to come around. Once done, it should move you towards the Star. There are ways to get the Star with time stopped, just fall from above and then kick in mid air and steer yourself to the niche to get the Star. In the DS remake, it is much easier to get the Star. You can use either Yoshi's flutter jump or Luigi's backflip to reach the Star without need of the clock hand.
Star 4: Stomp on the Thwomp[]
For this Star, you will need to climb to the top of the Tower, you will need to have the clock moving for the final part of this mission. Once you reach the top of the tower, jump on the hand and then leap onto the conveyor (but don't fall off the sides) and then hop on the Thwomp's head to reach the platform with the Star. The way up to the tower's top however can be quite challenging, it is still possible to get this Star with the time stopped but you are going to need to rely on a huge string of wall jumps and slide flips at the mission's end. In the DS remake, the Star has been changed significantly, it is now located in a small niche at the top making (removing the threat of falling off the sides). Additionally, the center of the clock hand now has a pole to leap from making it much easier to obtain this Star with time stopped. Other than that, reaching the Star is the same as ever.
Star 5: Timed Jumps on Moving Bars[]
This Star is located directly above "Roll in the Cage" (or "Luigi in the Cage"). You must climb the tower and past the halfway point, find the sliding platforms and then enter the cage to reach the Star. This mission is typically easier with time stopped. In the DS remake, there is a black box blocking the entrance to the cage and Wario is required to break it. If you're not Wario at this point, there is a Wario Cap nearby which you can obtain to reach the Star.
Star 6: Stop Time For Red Coins[]
When Mario enters the course go to the right where several platforms can be seen. Jump on the platforms to collect the Red Coins on them, all 8 Red Coins are located here. You will definitely want to have time stopped for this mission as this star is nearly impossible without stopping the clock, hence its name.
Star 7: Tick Tock Silver Stars (DS)[]
This Silver Star mission is rather different to the others as Silver Stars are constantly bouncing around the course rather than them all being in one general location. It is recommended to wait for the Silver Stars at the bottom of the course (as the flooring here is wider than the rest of the course and it is easier to lose track of them the higher you are) and once they reach the bottom, obtain them while avoiding the Bob-ombs that occasionally rain down. If a Silver Star falls off the course, don't panic, it will descend back from the top of the course and continue bouncing down to the bottom of the course as before. Once all 5 Silver Stars have been obtained, the Star will appear at the halfway point of the clocktower. Climb the Tower to get the Star.
Enemies encountered[]
- Amp
- Fire Spitter (Super Mario 64 only)
- Goomba
- Heave-Ho
- Fire Chomp (Super Mario 64 DS only)
- Thwomp
- Bob-omb
Other appearances[]
In Mario Party 3 and Mario Party Superstars, there is a minigame named Ticktock Hop that takes place on the face of the Tick Tock Clock painting, and it involves the characters having to avoid being hit by the clock's minute hand as it moves around. The minigame title itself is a pun on Tick Tock Clock.
Trivia[]
- Tick Tock Clock is one of the few courses not based on courses in Super Mario Bros..
- About half of the stars require a specific speed (go or not) to complete.
- The second mission in the Nintendo 64 version, "The Pit and the Pendulums," is named after a book from Edgar Allen Poe, titled The Pit and the Pendulum.
