Where there is Smoke, there is fire!
~ Smoke's Battle Cry in Mortal Kombat (2011).

Tomas Vrbada, also known as Smoke, is a Lin Kuei assassin and one of the main protagonists of the Mortal Kombat franchise. A close friend of Kuai Liang with the power to use smoke, he is often forced into becoming an unwilling villain.

He is voiced by the late Ken Lally in Mortal Kombat (2011), Andrew Bowden as his more villainous self in Mortal Kombat X, Matthew Mercer in Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, and Yuri Lowenthal in Mortal Kombat 1.

History[]

Tomas Vrbada is a member of the Lin Kuei, hailing from Prague in the Czech Republic. He is a close friend and ally of the younger Sub-Zero (Formerly Tundra) Kuai Liang.

Second Timeline[]

Mortal Kombat (2011)[]

In the rebooted timeline, Smoke, along with Kuai Liang, who had taken on the mantle of Sub-Zero, split to find the murderer of the Elder Sub-Zero. After battling Kitana, Smoke discovered Shang Tsung and Kano in the Living Forest, making a heavy weapons deal. Trying to stop them, the Lin Kuei battled Kano, then took on Shang Tsung and Reptile, defeating them despite Tsung using Bi-Han's form. He is ambushed by Sektor and the Lin Kuei, who he was shocked to have been successfully converted into cyborgs, and was got captured for conversion, but was saved by Raiden and allied with the Earthrealm Warriors, hoping they would be able to save Sub-Zero from the Cyber Initiative.

Tragically, by the time they reached the Coliseum, Sub-Zero was in the process of being captured by the Cyber Lin Kuei, and Smoke had to be held back by Raiden to prevent him being captured as well. Smoke, Raiden, Smoke, and Johnny attempted to sway Kitana to their side, but she fought and defeated him and Cage. Later Smoke and the others stumbled across Jade and mistakenly believed she had attacked Kitana, and after fighting her was informed that "Kitana" was a clone named Mileena. At some point during the second tournament Smoke was eliminated.

During the invasion of Earthrealm, Smoke and Raiden found the Cyberized Sub-Zero after Kabal defeated him. Horrified at what had happened to him, he begged the Earthrealm warriors to help save Kuai Liang. Thankfully Jax and the others were able to restore his humanity, and Smoke greeted him after he awoke. Later on, they were surrounded by the Cyber Lin Kuei, and Smoke found himself battling Sektor. While he put up a good fight, Sektor nearly beat him, but he was saved by Nightwolf, and Smoke managed to defeat other Lin Kuei. However, shortly afterwards, they would be attacked by Sindel, who managed to kill Smoke and the others. Tragically, Smoke would be revived as a revenant by Quan Chi, enslaved to the will of Shinnok.

In his non canon ending, Smoke was able to personally defeat Shao Kahn, and had memories of his early life unlocked, He remembered he had been abducted as a human sacrifice by a cult as a boy. However he had returned from death as an Enenra, who killed the cult members and returned to a human form, explaining his strange abilities.

Revenant Smoke[]

The Revenant Smoke would be seen in MKX as part of the Netherrealm's forces, having embraced the identity of Enenra. In MK11, while he does not appear, Noob Saibot mocks Sub-Zero by referencing Smoke's fate.

New Era[]

Main article: Smoke (3rd Timeline)

As well as the New Era incarnation of Smoke, an alternate version of Smoke is seen as part of the Multiversal Union of Light in the battle against the Order of Darkness.

Other Media[]

Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm[]

Mortal Kombat Legends[]

Smoke appears in the second movie, Battle of the Realms. Following the death of Bi-Han, Kuai Liang inherits the mantle of Sub-Zero. He spars with Smoke in preparation for his mission to find and destroy his brother's killer, but their sparring is interrupted when they are summoned by the Lin Kuei Grandmaster. When the two meet with their leader, the Grandmaster informs them of the identity of Bi-Han's killer: Scorpion of the Shirai Ryu clan. The Lin Kuei have been hired to hunt down Scorpion and obtain from him a mysterious relic that belongs to their client.

In order to carry out this task and bring the Lin Kuei into the modern era, the Grandmaster has declared that the top Lin Kuei members will be converted into cyborgs, calling upon the recently augmented Sektor and Cyrax. Smoke and Sub-Zero are horrified by this revelation and refuse to submit to the process. Smoke casts a cloud of gas to shroud himself and Sub-Zero as the two attempt to flee from the Lin Kuei temple, but Sektor and Cyrax pursue the runaways. In the ensuing struggle, the two cyborgs overpower and capture Smoke, beginning the assimilation process. Smoke urges Sub-Zero to run while Sektor and Cyrax take him away to undergo full conversion. Tragically, Smoke is left fully converted to a Cyber Ninja.

Powers and Abilities[]

As a human, Smoke had the ability to emit smoke, most commonly seen as the smoky fumes that his human forms emit. He still seems to retain this ability in his cyborg form, though he doesn't seem to use it much. Smoke usually uses this ability to disappear or create a cloud of fumes that his opponent chokes on, making them open to an attack. After becoming a nanotech based cyborg, his body appears to be made of smoke or nanites emulating the appearance of smoke. Smoke also gained the ability to transform others into shadow warriors by flowing his gaseous mist into them.

Prior to 3rd timeline, Smoke was a half-Enenra. Until in 3rd timeline depicted in Liu Kang's universe, he is now fully human who uses magic spells.
