Hero Overview

We are many; you are but one.
~ Ermac.

Ermac is a fusion of the souls of dead Outworld warriors and an anti-hero from the Mortal Kombat series of fighting games. While they were originally created as a living weapon by Shao Kahn, in the original timeline, Ermac would later choose to change his ways. In the rebooted timeline, he remains an antagonist, but later chooses to align with Kotal Kahn, in the third timeline (New Era), he initially acts as a villain, before changing his ways.

He is voiced by Jamieson Price in Mortal Kombat X and 1.

History[]

Original Timeline[]

Main article: Ermac (1st Timeline)

Ermac was a creation of Shao Kahn, and served him until his defeat, when he was later freed in an encounter with Kenshi. Now free to make their own choice, Ermac elected to change their ways and aid the Forces of Light.

Second Timeline[]

Main article: Ermac (2nd Timeline)

This version of Ermac was also created by Shao Kahn, but would later elect to serve Kotal Kahn for the good of Outworld.

Mortal Kombat 1[]

Main article: Ermac (3rd Timeline)

This Ermac was created as a result of Quan Chi, and was initially his minion until the deceased Emperor Jerrod became the main host. Afterwards, the Ermac Collective rejected Quan Chi's attempts to control him and were left to find a new path.

Powers and Abilities[]

Ermac is a master warrior thanks to being a fusion of many warrior souls and fights with powers related to the soul. His most used power is his telekinesis and he also can manipulate soul energy to levitate and fire energy blasts. However Ermac does have one weakness, the Netherrealm, which weakens him the longer he is there since he is a being of magic. It also weakens the bonds that hold the souls composing him together, threatening his existence. As his alternate weapon fighting style, Ermac wields an axe.

Quotes[]

The enigmatic Ermac is a being composed of the souls of conquered Outworld warriors. For many years he served at the side of Shao Kahn, but has since freed himself from the emperor's influence. Once a force of evil, he now controls his own destiny.

~ Ermac asking for Kotal Kahn to prove he can earn his loyalty
For a moment, Jerrod took control. We fixed the damage that allowed him, and re-imposed our collective will, but the damage went further than we thought. Without Quan Chi's aid, the spell which birthed us would fail. All of our souls would die. We freed the sorcerer from captivity, but after healing us, he betrayed us! He schemed to make us his slave once again. Kombat was fierce, yet we persisted, finding strength in the unique abilities of our collective souls. Now, we must decide our future path. Reconciling our desires will be difficult, but reconcile them we must. If not, we will be consumed by civil war.
~ Ermac's Mortal Kombat 1 ending.

Trivia[]

  • Ermac was actually inspired by a rumour amongst MK fans about a secret red clad ninja character in the original Mortal Kombat that would appear whenever a player overused Scorpion.
  • In Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, human Smoke had one of his fatalities.
  • Since he is a being comprised of many entities, Ermac refers to himself in plural (i.e. saying "we" instead of "I" and "our" instead of "my").
  • In Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks, a Game Over message says to "Ask Ermac For Help", which is meant to act as a hint that he exists as a secret boss at the Warrior Shrine. This also parodies the rumors that he was in the first Mortal Kombat.
  • When he is knocked off the Sky Temple in Mortal Kombat Deception and Unchained, Ermac briefly shouts "Suck it!"
  • He and Ashrah are the only "good" characters to ever be enemies.
  • Ermac is seen in the intro to Mortal Kombat Armageddon, first using a clothesline on Rain. After the fighters began charging up the pyramid, Shang Tsung in the form of Ermac and Nightwolf punched at Sheeva, but she held them off and almost choked them until Kenshi stabbed her in the chest. After Quan Chi defeated Kenshi, Ermac used his telekinetic powers to throw the sorcerer off the pyramid and then changed back into Shang Tsung as he stomped on Kenshi's chest.
