~ Jax Briggs's Battle Cry in Mortal Kombat (2011).
I've shed more than enough blood.
~ Jax to Skarlet.

Jax, real name Jackson Briggs, is one of the main protagonists of the Mortal Kombat: Titan trilogy, both a reboot and spin-off of the Mortal Kombat franchise.

He is a major character-turned-minor protagonistic antagonist on Mortal Kombat (2011) and a minor-antagonist-turned-major protagonist in Mortal Kombat X and a major character in Mortal Kombat 11.

After he was killed by Sindel in the Earthrealm Invasion, he was resurrected as a Revenant by Quan Chi. He was then reverted back to life when Raiden reversed Quan Chi's spell, and was left deeply traumatized for years afterward.

He was voiced by Marz Timms in Mortal Kombat (2011), Greg Eagles and the late Carl Weathers (as a skin) in Mortal Kombat X, and William Michael Stephens in Mortal Kombat 11.

Biography[]

Mortal Kombat (2011)[]

Jax was held captive by Shang Tsung, held in Goro's Lair. As Sonya enter the lair, she finds a critically wounded Jax as she freed him. After Sonya took Kitana and Jade down, Raiden, Johnny Cage, and Liu Kang appeared and Raiden healed Jax up completely. Jax was shown disgusted as Scorpion murdered Bi-Han. He also appeared when Liu Kang emerged victory against Shang Tsung.

As Raiden refused Shang Tsung's offer for a second tournament (Hosted by Shao Kahn), Shang Tsung summoned an army of Tarkatan to attack the temple. Jax attempted to defeat as many Tarkatans and rescue people, only to be knocked out by the other Tarkatans. As he regains consciousness, he acknowledged the fact Sonya is gone. Therefore, it became his main objective.

Jax, Raiden, and Johnny Cage sneaked into the Throne Room. As Jax exposed himself to Shang Tsung, the tournament begun where he challenged Baraka, defeating him. The three were then at the Armory, where Johnny upsetted Jax, resulting to Jax defeating him. As Jade appeared, she challenged Jax, only to be defeated.

The three then headed to the Dead Pool, where they detected Sonya tied on hooks. Jax attacked and defeated Sheeva to free Sonya.

Jax and Sonya headed to the Soul Chamber. Both were surprised to see another Sub-Zero only to find out he's the younger brother. As Ermac appeared, Jax attempted to attack him only for Ermac to tear both of Jax's arm off. Sub-Zero then objected Sonya to head back to Earthrealm to get Jax healed after he defeated Ermac.

Jax got both mechanical arms and reprogrammed Sub-Zero (cyber form) and restored his humanity. After the group fought off the Cyber Lin Kuei's, Sindel appeared and attacked the group. Jax was killed as she pierced his throat with her heels.

Quan Chi brought all the fallen Earthrealm warriors, including Jax, back as revenants. Quan Chi demanded the revenants (Jax, Stryker, and Kabal) to attack Raiden, only to be defeated.

Mortal Kombat X[]

Jax would spend the next five years as a revenant, before being restored to life along with Scorpion and Sub-Zero. As he was in recovery, he fell in love with the nurse Vera, and decided to retire and live with his family.

As 25 years passed, Sonya sought Jax out for his assistance to track down Quan Chi. As Jax was later convinced, they headed to Netherrealm, taking down the revenants. Jax took Liu Kang and Quan Chi down and captured the sorcerer.

Mortal Kombat 11[]

Times after the events of Mortal Kombat X, Jax's wife, Vera, passed away, leaving Jax broken to the point where he retired while his daughter, Jacqui, is enlisted in the Special Forces.

The younger Sonya and Jax are summoned by Kronika at the Special Forces base. The younger Jax seemed surprised about him and Sonya having kids. The older Jax attempted to reach out to his daughter, Jacqui. The phone connection was not able to connect due to the time quake. As Jax rested, Kronika appeared suddenly and managed to recruit him, claiming that she could offer him a better future for him and his family.

The younger Jax and Jacqui were at a shooting range, testing his prosthetic arm. Jax learned about his demise, becoming a revenant and his experiences of it, and how his wife passed. As Raiden sent the younger Jax and Jacqui to Shang Tsung's Island, revenant Kabal appeared, only to be defeated. When the two reached to the Well of Souls, they were encountered by Bi-Han, who was then defeated.

The older Jax appeared and Jacqui was disgusted acknowledging the fact her dad joined up with Kronika. The younger Jax defeated his older self and then headed out, only to be encountered by Cetrion. Moments later, Cetrion putted Jacqui's life on the line so that Jax would hand over the crown.

On Kharon's fleet, the older Jax appeared and clashed against Raiden. As Raiden defeated him, he managed to convinced Jax to fight against Kronika's army.

Aftermath[]

In Shang Tsung's Island, Jax and Bi-Han stopped Shang Tsung and Fujin from taking the crown. Jax reflected on how Shang Tsung used to torture him in the same place and how he wanted to return the favor. As Fujin defeated Bi-Han, Shang Tsung was absorbing Jax's soul, only to be stopped by Fujin.

After Fujin defeated Jax, he convinced him that Kronika was just using his sadness to her benefit. After Sindel and Nightwolf defeated Cetrion, the younger Jax and Jacqui arrived to arrest Shang Tsung and Sindel, until the older Jax calmed the situation down while the group gave information about the crown. Nightwolf decided to go with the Briggs family.

As Jax witnessed Kotal Kahn being killed and Sindel joined up with Shao Kahn, he was yet surprised due to the fact she killed him before. While Shang Tsung tricked Fujin and Raiden with the Crown, the three attacked Shang Tsung. Jax was then knocked out as soon as Shang Tsung sent Raiden and Fujin flying into him. After the two brothers were defeated, Jax's fate was left unknown like the others.

Appearance[]

He was forced to use metallic arms in order to survive, after having his organic arms telekinetically dismembered by Ermac. But his Revenant counterpart on Mortal Kombat (2011) is seen with very a desaturated skin with flesh wounds and glowing white eyes.

Later in MKX, he wears a camouflage vest with his last name Briggs on his right upper vest pocket with his left upper pocket acting as a storage for his cigars and he still wears his dog tag around his neck, along with two more additional pockets near his abdomen. He has an American flag wrapped up and tied around his upper right arm and he wears green pants with some additional color of black on them and wears black army boots.

In MK11, an older Jax wears a brown leather vest with his last name Briggs on his back, a black tanktop from the inside and a two dog tags, an olive green pants along with kneepads and a black army boots. He later wears clothes that looks similar to Kronika after being manipulated. A younger Jax wears a black army vest, a purple camouflage pants with straps as well as his boots. He is also clean shaven in contrast to his present counterpart who has fully grown beard.

Personality[]

Completely opposite of what the real Jackson Briggs is, being protective and caring, his revenant counterpart is completely cruel, heartless, and completely brainwashed.

Powers and Abilities[]

Due to his membership in the army, Jax is quite a hardened soldier in the battlefield. He is known to show incredible ferocity while staying focused at the same time. Jax's most prominent attribute is his massive upper body strength. His physique and strength are so powerful that he is able to crush human heads with ease and shake the Earth with a single punch.

Jax utilizes cybernetic strength enhancers to further augment his already impressive physical power. These implants also carry portable missiles and a piston-like mechanism to increase the force of his blows. His bionic arms may have made him the most physically powerful man on Earth, if he wasn't already that strong.

Aside from his kombat skills, Jax is also a competent technician and scientist, having been in charge of the portal development technology that the Outworld Investigation Agency uses to move between realms, and also utilized his smarts to restore Cyrax's free will.

Trivia[]

  • In a MK 2011 trailer, Jax uses his Missile move, but it is not present in the game.
  • In certain cutscenes and fatalities in MK 2011, Jax has a submachine gun on his back. It sometimes even disappears after the camera changes angles, hinting that the machine gun was a scrapped concept for his character.
  • In the indie fighting game Skullgirls Encore, the 13th alternate color palette of the character Beowulf directly references Jax's MK3 incarnation.
  • In a couple of Jax's Mortal Kombat X intros, he says "I'm too old for this shit!". This is a reference to the catchphrase of Officer Roger Murtagh from the buddy-cop action film series Lethal Weapon.
  • In MKX's character select screen, when playing a match in Jax's Carl Weathers outfit and Johnny Cage's commando outfit, after selecting a stage, Johnny will say "You son of a bitch!" and shake hands with Jax. This is a recreation of the handshake scene between the characters Dillon and Dutch in the movie Predator.
  • Despite killing Tremor in the original timeline, Tremor and Jax are still aware of one another and show hatred for each other in MKX.
  • In MKX, Jax is one of the few characters whose fighting style is altered by the addition or removal of a weapon.
  • Jax is one of five characters to have an alternate version of a Brutality. The other three are Erron Black, Predator, Tremor, and Reptile.
  • Jax's rocket launcher in the Heavy Weapons variation is based on the M72 LAW, though Jax actually uses it backwards; the extending part is the exhaust of the real weapon. His SMG appears to be the same fictional (although based on the real-life MP5K) weapon he uses in MK: Special Forces.
  • Jax is the only past iteration of playable characters in MK11 Story Mode, whose mirror match against his future-self is normal, despite the latter iteration had an experience as a Revenant in MKX.
    • Counting Johnny Cage’s mirror match between past and future selves, Jax is the second character who has a mirror match between past and future selves who are both humans.
  • Jax, Johnny Cage and Kano are the only known characters to have team-up cutscenes between their past and present selves in MK11 Story Mode.
  • Jax's friendship in MK11 is a reference to an internet meme of a Moldovan musician and composer Sergey Stepanov, who was commonly known as the Epic (Ultra) Sax Guy. It also related to video clip and Eurovision entry of Moldova Hey Mamma by Sunstroke Project in 2017 where Stepanov is member of there.
  • In MK11, past Jax will mention to Sonya that it must be weird having daughters their age. Considering that Cassie and Jacqui must be at least 20, that means that Johnny Cage, Sonya and Jax should have been on their early twenties during the events of MK 2011.
