Hero Overview

Father. I imagined you taller.
~ Damian to his father, Bruce Wayne.
I'm not like Tim, or Jason, or even Dick. I'm light-years ahead of all the past Robins in skill and training. I'm either your partner in this or I'm not.
~ Prime Earth Damian Wayne.
I am Robin. Son of Batman. And that's all you need to know!
~ Prime Earth Damian Wayne.
Connor Hawke: Then who are you?
Damian Wayne: I'm still trying to figure that out.
~ Damian telling Connor Hawke that he is still wondering who he is in the world.

Damian Wayne, also better known as Robin, is a major character in the DC Universe, specifically serving as a major character in the Batman franchise and one of the main protagonists of the Teen Titans franchise.

He is the son of Batman, the legendary vigilante and Gotham City's protector, and Talia al Ghul, a member of the League of Assassins. This makes him an heir to the world's greatest crime-fighter and its greatest super-villain Ra's al Ghul. Damian became the fourth Robin, becoming the current incarnation, and teamed up with his older adoptive brother Dick Grayson when he was Batman after Bruce's apparent demise, before becoming Robin to the returned Bruce when he resumed the mantle of Batman.

Damian has also been a member of the Batman Family and the Teen Titans, and the best friend of Superman's son, Jonathan Samuel Kent along with Green Arrow's son, Connor Hawke and Deathstroke's daughter, Ravager, and the older biological brother to Respawn.

He was created by Mike W. Barr, Jerry Bingham, Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert, and first appeared in Batman: Son of the Demon in 1987 as an infant, and later in Batman #655 in September of 2006.

Background[]

Having spent his gestation in a laboratory, Damian was raised by his mother until ten years of age, at which point she left him in the care of his father, who had not been aware of his son's existence until that point in time. Damian is violent and self-important, and was trained by the League of Assassins, learning to kill at a young age.

After the events of Batman R.I.P. and Batman: Battle for the Cowl, Damian has taken up the identity of Robin, becoming the fifth and current person to use the Boy Wonder's identity. He worked with Dick Grayson, who replaced Bruce as Batman for a certain time period. Morrison's Batman #666 (2007) depicts a future wherein Damian has become Batman. In Batman Incorporated #8, Damian is killed by his clone, The Heretic. However, he is soon resurrected with temporary superpowers.

History[]

From a young age, Damian was raised by his mother, Talia al Ghul, to become a formidable warrior, and was already a seasoned martial artist by his pre-teens. When he was 10, Talia revealed his presence to Bruce (his father). She left Damian to Batman's custody, in hopes that he could be a hindrance to his work.

Initially spoiled and pugnacious, Damian attacked Robin (aka Tim Drake) whom he wanted to replace as Batman's faithful sidekick, causing a ruckus in the Batcave. Batman promptly grounded him, but he escaped, wearing a special Robin costume and getting into conflict with Spook and killing the criminal. Shortly afterward, Bruce agreed to make Damian Robin and fired Tim, causing Tim to become Red Robin.

Although Damian developed violent and mischievous tendencies, in truth, he was genuinely proud to be Batman's son and wished to play his part in his father's war against crime. Damian served twice with the Teen Titans, the first time very briefly shortly before the Flashpoint, and again during DC Rebirth where he became leader of the team after the presumed death of Tim Drake who was later revealed to still be alive.

Despite feeling like she can be too merciful, out of the Trinity, Damian appears to admire Wonder Woman the most due to her warrior background and tenacity.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Damian Wayne is the son of Bruce Wayne, who was Gotham's protector and Dark Knight, Batman, and Talia al Ghul, the daughter of the legendary Ra's al Ghul. Batman battled against the League of Shadows during his adventures, and met Ra's daughter and fell in love with her. Bruce didn't initially know about his son's existence, and Talia had him to become the successor of the League of Shadows, and was trained to become a unbeatable warrior. Talia also attempted to have Bruce become the leader of the league, but he refused on numerous occasions.

Since childhood, he was trained to be a master assassin and a martial artist, and Talia believed that he could be the perfect heir since he had Bruce's DNA. When he was seven years, Talia tasked Damian to spy on Bruce Wayne and keeps tabs on him for her. Eventually, Talia revealed Damian's existence to Bruce when he was ten years old, and left Damian to Bruce in custody so he could raise him. Damian showed himself to be spoiled and aggressive, and attacked Tim Drake as he wanted to take over the mantle of Robin.

Becoming Robin[]

When Batman was presumably killed by Darkseid, his title was left up for grabs by Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, with the latter having become the Red Hood. Damian didn't believe that Grayson was fit to become the new Dark Knight, but helped Dick fight Jason Todd when the latter created a crooked version of the Bat suit. After Grayson defeated Jason, he became the new Batman and had Damian become his Robin. The two would often have their differences, but would work together to stop Batman's rogues gallery and protect Gotham in Bruce's absence. It's later revealed that Grayson chose Damian because he saw a need to improve his character, and didn't choose Tim because he saw him as an equal.

Damian mocked Tim Drake due to him losing the title of Robin, and Drake believed that Batman was still alive, going off to find him and taking on the mantle of "Red Robin". Though Damian was cocky and arrogant at first, he slowly became empathetic and determined due to Grayson's teachings. During the "Blackest Night" storyline, Damian worked with the Bat Family in fighting off the Black Lantern Corps. Damian started to slowly distance himself from his mother, as Talia cloned Damian once she realized that her son had sided with the Batman Family. When being confronted by Talia, Damian rejected her, and was shown his clone before being informed that he was now an enemy of the League of Shadows.

Though Damian had improved personally, Grayson still saw that the child still needed friendship and compassion in order to make him better. Damian was taken to the Teen Titans, and Damian took immediate steps to become the leader of the team, and met Raven and Ravager. When Tim Drake returned to the Titans, Damian came at heads with him before leaving the team, seeing the group preferred Drake over him. Eventually, Bruce returned after traveling through time, and returned to take the mantle of Batman, and Damian returned as his sidekick. Damian later became the best friend of Jonathan Kent and began the Super Sons team with Jon until Jon was aged up as a result of a scheme by Ultraman, which caused the team to disband, to Damian's sadness.

City of Bane[]

Bane, along with Flashpoint Paradox immigrant Thomas Wayne/Batman, conquered Gotham City, using Psycho-Pirate to enthrall an army of supervillains to maintain control of the city. Bane allowed Batman to escape, if gravely injured, but threatened repercussions if he or any of his Family enter Gotham again. Wanting to rescue Alfred Pennyworth, Robin infiltrated the city, however, was caught by Flashpoint Batman; in retaliation, Bane snapped Alfred's neck, killing the Wayne father figure.

The Bat Family and Catwoman invade Gotham and take out the villains. While Bruce and Bane meet for a final skirmish, Catwoman breaks the "honour" of the duel, leading to Bane's defeat, reinforced when Thomas shot him in the head; Bruce defeated his alternate universe father. In a hospital bed, Thomas was recovering, until it was revealed Bane survived the gunshot, and in response to the betrayal, broke Thomas's back as he did Batman years prior.

Despite Gotham returning to some semblance of normalcy, Damian was deeply traumatised by Alfred's death, since the kindly old man was the first person that he felt kindness from.

Lazarus Island Tournament[]

Wanting to discover who he really is and struggling with grief of Alfred's death, Damian enters a lethal tournament on Lazarus Island, where fights end in death, but the island's properties revive the fighters as if no damage had happened. He learns more hidden secrets about the al Ghul family, such as learning about his great-grandmother, who had similarly achieved longevity through Lazarus Pits, and had plotted to help an ancient demon conquer the Earth. Damian develops a friendship of sorts with Ravager, as well as learns of a half-brother in Respawn. Damian also enters his first experience with romance in a mutual crush with rival contestant, Flatline.

Time in Gotham Academy[]

In order to placate his father's hopes for him to have some normal life, Damian agreed to attend school. He found it dull, but could tolerate it. Although, the normalcy was disrupted when a classmate who idolised serial killer Victor Zsasz, leading to him and Zsasz being apprehended by Batman and Robin. Meanwhile, Dr. Kirk Langstrom, abandoning his morality due to the trauma of Task Force Z, fully embraced his Man-Bat identity, and created an army of Man-Bats to conquer Gotham; he had an ally in a woman who had patterned herself after Thomas Elliot/Hush, as she called herself Shush.

Damian suspected a member of his school faculty was Shush, and a former trainer from his time growing up in the League of Assassins; it was revealed that Shush and his former heartless trainer were two separate women, one a teacher and the other the principal, yet had no affiliation with each other. Prior the imminent Man-Bat invasion, Robin would reunite with Flatline, who was looking for her sister in Gotham; Flatline deceived Robin to help her sister escape repercussions from her actions, although was apologetic about it.

Shush eventually betrayed Man-Bat upon deeming him insane, allowing Batman and Robin to learn the details of his plans, and thus discovered a method to defeat all of the Man-bats.

Bane and Vengeance[]

Batman and Robin explore a potential threat on Dinosaur Island. They discover Bane had taken up residence on the island, battling the forces of the Cult of Kobra, to prevent the group stealing the natural resources. Still enraged over Alfred's death, Robin pursued Bane, while Batman was distracted in a fight with Vengeance, an altered clone considered "daughter" of the Santa Priscan supervillain.

As Robin and Bane fight, the latter acknowledges that the boy deserves his revenge, and accepts that if he were to die, then so be it. Despite being allowed an opening for a killing blow, Robin ceased his attack; he admitted that he still hates Bane, but doesn't want to disgrace Alfred's memory with more violence. Not aware or interested in the peace, Vengeance aimed to protect her father by shooting a dart full of modified Venom at Robin, which would immensely augment his physical strength, but reduce his mental faculties to be ineffectual in combat against a skilled opponent.

Powers and Abilities[]

Abilities[]

  • Artistry: Damian is considered as skilled with a brush as he is with a sword.
  • Business Management: Trained by his mother and the League of Assassins in the way of controlling a company with an iron grip. Even as a young boy he knows that in business there are wars and even in war there are assassins. Damian is involved with the Wayne Enterprises' board members. He even intimidated the board members by tracking down financial irregularities within the Wayne Enterprises' accounts.
  • Great Physical Form: Damian's stamina and fitness borders ridiculous as he's able to do 50 mile swimming laps at age 10.
  • Driving Damian is skilled driver despite his young age.
  • Expert Hacker: Hacked into NORAD with ease when he was only 6 years old.
  • Hand-to-Hand Combat (Advanced): Trained by the League of Assassins, Talia al Ghul and Batman; Damian may not be physically tough but he knows how to control his weight and has stated that he knows, "one thousand ways to kill a man." Damian's training has made him a formidable hand-to-hand combatant able to defeat or hold his own against multiple opponents, armed opponents or skilled hand-to-hand combatants.
  • Martial Arts: Trained by the League of Assassins, Damian has stated he knows just as many martial arts as Batman and can use them more effectively. This may be a largely overstated comment but one should not ask for verification. In Son of Batman, Damian, aged 10, kicks a 200 kg muscle monster through windows and parries his attacks with ease, fighting almost equally with Nightwing and being able to take on the world's top assassin within the DC universe.
  • Mimicry: Damian can imitate anyone's voice and speech patterns perfectly as he imitated Tim Drake's voice in order to gain access to the Batcave.[52]
  • Stealth: Damian was able to sneak into Gotham City and furthermore into the Batcave virtually undetected until he felt necessary. Of all the Robins, Damian may be the one that is the most silent.
  • Swordsmanship: Damian assaulted both Tim Drake and Bruce Wayne on separate occasions with his sword, apparently the same sword used by Ra's al Ghul. Although Damian no longer uses his sword as frequently as he used to, he is still unmatched with one when armed with it.
  • Throwing: Damian is trained by the League of Assassins in shuriken throwing and further trained by Batman in Batarang throwing.
  • Superpowers: Briefly following his resurrection, Damian had all of the powers of Superman, which made him the only member of the Bat family (at the time) to have superpowers. These powers ultimately faded, and Damian returned to being a normal human.

Trivia[]

  • Ranked 1st on IGN's "Top Ten Best Robins".
  • Ranked 25th on IGN's "Top 25 Heroes of DC Comics".
  • Ranked 6th in Newsarama's "10 Most Popular Comic Book Characters Introduced in the Last 25 Years".
  • The idea of a biological child to Batman and Talia al Ghul was first introduced in the comic Batman: Son of the Demon, in which both characters married and had an unnamed son. When Zero Hour occurred, the events of Son of the Demon were made non-canon to mainstream continuity, and remained that way until after Infinite Crisis when Damian Wayne debuted.
    • However, the altered details of his conception in the Post-Crisis continuity drew controversy, as it is revealed Talia had drugged and essentially raped Batman to bare his child. It was later shown that Talia was actually married to Bruce Wayne by Ra's al Ghul, although Batman thought the marriage was not valid has he did not give Talia consent. Although Talia stated that, in her culture, only the bride needed to give consent for couples to be wed.
    • Regardless of the origin, many consider that Talia became pregnant with Damian when she married Batman at one point, something that the Dark Knight would not find out about until much later when confronted with his biological son.
  • Damian's name is likely a reference to Damien Thorn from The Omen (1976), as both are descendants of "demons" created for the purpose of conquering the world.
  • In the Lazarus Tournament arc, it was shown that he had an interest in manga, particularly shojo romantic stories. This also inspired his hobby of drawing for sketches and artwork.
  • While Jon Kent's premature aging ended their close friendship, in a potential future, they become close like their fathers again, and with Wonder Woman's daughter, become the next generation Trinity.
  • Starting with the DC Animated Movie Universe, Damian began his first romantic relationships., in order of occurrence:
    • In DCAMU, it was with Raven.
    • In DCeased, it was with Cassie Sandsmark/Wonder Woman.
    • In the main comics, it was with Flatline.
