Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel, better known as Harley Quinn, is a major character in the DC Universe, specifically serving as a major character in the Batman franchise, one of the main characters of the Suicide Squad franchise, and the titular main protagonist of the series of the same name.
Usually a partner and girlfriend of The Joker, this version hailing from the Prime Earth no longer has any connection with him. Though originally a villain and enemy of the Batman, she has ended her relationship with the Joker and continued a career as an anti-heroic vigilante, and even teams up with the Dark Knight and the Bat Family on several occasions. She is also the best friend-turn-girlfriend of Poison Ivy, as well as the best friend of Catwoman, and the owner of the hyenas Bud and Lou.
She was created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, and first appeared in Suicide Squad Vol 4 #1 in November of 2011 in the New 52.
History[]
Dr. Harleen Quinzel was a psychologist from Arkham Asylum who was called to attend the Joker, who unknown to her was manipulating her to become his partner. The Joker succeeded in manipulating Harley, who broke him out his cell and the two became partners in crime.
She was corrupted by the Joker, who threw her into Chemical vats (exactly what happened to him) and turned her into his henchwoman Harley Quinn. Over the years, they committed crimes until Joker decided that she was no longer useful to him, which she defend against him is no longer a villain once more.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Harleen Frances "Harley" Quinzel was born in Canarsie, Brooklyn, New York to Nick and Sharon Quinzel, and is the older sister to Barry, Frankie, and Ezzie Quinzel. Harley's interest in criminal psychology began when she was child, and increased when a boy named Bernie Bash murdered someone to prove his love for her. Despite Bernie's crime, she broke into his house and stole a stuffed beaver from his father's taxidermy shop as a memento of their relationship. During her high school years, Harley showed herself to be quite intelligent and athletic, being an honor student and gymnast. She attended Gotham University for veterinary and biological science, but decided to leave the field to pursue psychiatry.
Becoming Harley Quinn[]
Harley excelled in the field and became a psychiatrist at an unknown hospital, and transferred to Arkham Asylum to study the minds of criminals. Seeing that the doctors couldn't understand the mind of the patients there, Harley went undercover as a patient herself, but the Joker saw through her guise. The Joker manipulated Harley, revealing that he knew that her father was killed by a drunk driver who had connections to get off.
Eventually, Harley's supervisor Sterano discovered her attraction to the Joker after stealing her notes, and intended to expose her. Harley attempted to kill Sterano, but she was interrupted by the guards, but managed to break the Joker out his cell. The Joker then took her to Ace Chemical Processing Plant, and shoved her into a chemical vat to see if she would survive. She survived, but had lost touch with reality and was dubbed "Harley Quinn" by the Joker, the two becoming partners in crime.
Suicide Squad[]
During her murderous spree, she was arrested by Black Canary and sentenced to death row at Belle Rave prison for her crimes. She was recruited into Suicide Squad by Amanda Waller after being tortured and implant with a micro-bomb, and was tasked with stopping the Basilisk, a metahuman terrorist organization. After another mission, Harley's micro-bomb was accidently deactivated and escaped from Belle Rave. Harley went to Gotham City to see if the rumors surrounding the Joker's death, and was also being hunted by the Suicide Squad.
DC Rebirth[]
Harley's history appears to have been slightly altered as a result of DC Rebirth. While still manipulated by Joker and exposed to chemicals, her father was never killed in a car accident.
Personality[]
Harley Quinn is the definition of crazy and madness, turning to a life of crime. She was very happy indulging in every criminal activity, however over the years (and some help of Batman), she has become an antiheroine thus far, even allying herself with Power Girl at one point.
In current days, she has worked with the Suicide Squad and even defeated the Joker proving she is no longer controlled by him. She is now her own person and despite her insanity, is heroic and noble as she helps people who need her help. She also protects innocent people as well, and is living her own life working as psychiatrist who helps people when not on the job as a superhero.

- Welch reprised her voice for the character in The Batman, Batman: Hush and Justice League Dark: Apokolips War.
- In the DC Extended Universe, she is portrayed by Margot Robbie, who also played Stereotypical Barbie in Barbie and voiced Flopsy Rabbit in Peter Rabbit.

- Harleen Quinzel (Prime Earth) appears as Harley Quinn (Prime Earth) as a playable character in the Infinite Crisis video game.
- Despite Harley's wacky personality, she has shown to be very intelligent and has earned a number of degrees in medical science, even neuroscience, that allow her to help or manipulate others. However, her psychotic and violent tendencies can occasionally cause her to make some unwise decisions. Her dependence on the Joker prior to their break up could also be a factor in her previously appearing incapable.
- It has been previously stated that deep down, Harley still holds a candle for the Joker, but his past abuse and darker tendencies keep her from returning to him.
- In contrast, Joker hoped they could someday reconcile as he admires the violent and psychotic aspects of Harley's personality. He previously tried to draw out those aspects more in Harley during the Death of the Family arc, but ironically it was this attempt that led to their breakup in the first place.
