Detailed walkthrough[]
The quest runs parallel with the Legion side quest Cold, Cold Heart, as both involve going to Nipton and checking out the Nipton Town Hall; it is advisable to start this quest with Ranger Ghost and then start the latter quest in the process to complete both on the return trip to the Mojave Outpost for decent early-game XP.
Nipton's fate[]
While at the Mojave Outpost in the southwest corner of the Mojave Wasteland, one can spot a figure standing on the roof of the northeastern barracks, a woman named Ghost and a member of the New California Republic Rangers. She will sarcastically welcome them to the Outpost before remarking that she has need for a courier, requesting them to follow the road east to the town of Nipton and investigate the lack of travelers coming west as well as conspicuous smoke trails seen from afar; Army regulations prevent her from doing it herself, so this is the next best option.
Upon approaching the town, the player character is greeted by an ecstatic (if not manic) Powder Ganger by the name of Oliver Swanick who proclaims life is grand after winning the "lottery". Moving past him into town reveals signs of great destruction and suffering, all at the hands of Caesar's Legion. Situated on the corner of the main street is the Nipton General Store, while et the end of the northbound street is the town hall. Either location yields an NPC who will provide the information required to complete this quest.
Bearing bad news[]
Inside the General Store resides Boxcars, a crippled Powder Ganger that will tell about the Legion's sacking of the town and carrying out a sadistic lottery resulting in decapitations, immolations, and enslavements, with himself the second-place winner and getting his legs broken while Swanick was allowed to go free.
At the entrance to the town hall, a contingent of legionnaries led by the frumentarius Vulpes Inculta (or Gabban if Vulpes was killed prior to reaching Nipton]] will approach the player character. The frumentarius will spare them the suffering endured by the rest and offer to tell the tale of Nipton's demise, intending to have them spread the word of Legion atrocities across the wasteland and especially to the ears of NCR, fulfilling the objective while also triggering Cold, Cold Heart.
Once the fate of Nipton is learned, return to the Outpost and speak with Ranger Ghost again, completing the quest and garnering NCR fame.
Quest stages[]
Notes[]
- Ranger Ghost will have unique dialogue if one's Sneak skill level is 60 or higher when first approaching to talk to her on the barracks' roof.[1]
- One can complete this quest by going to Nipton first before ever going to the Mojave Outpost. Talk to Ghost after talking to Cass in the bar and she will give the player character the quest, then they can complete it immediately by choosing the option that they have already been to Nipton.
- If Boone is an active companion, one is dressed in NCR armor, or has a negative reputation with the Legion, Vulpes Inculta and his troops will attack the player character immediately instead of initiating dialogue.
- It is possible to kill all the Legion members without consequence by killing them with silenced weapons while sneaking and not starting the quest Booted. If one has already spoken to Vulpes or started the quest Booted, it becomes impossible to not gain infamy after killing Vulpes. This does not affect dialogue with Vulpes Inculta in any way, and gives Good Karma for each kill.
Behind the scenes[]
- The quest name is a reference to the folk song "Keep Your Eyes on the Prize" which became popular during the American Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s.
- "Keep your eyes on the prize" is also an English idiom suggesting that one should maintain focus and composure against all distractions in order to achieve a desired result from something.
Bugs[]
- Render Unto Caesar" outside The Tops casino) and have not engaged Vulpes in front of the Nipton Town Hall until after that (he will simply engage/disengage conversation), it is possible that the player character will be unable to complete this quest. Talking to Boxcars only offers the "I'll be going now" option, and thus there is no dialogue to complete the quest. Ghost will continue to ask the player character to investigate, rendering this quest forever incomplete. [verified]
- If this bug is encountered on the PC, it is possible to complete the quest by using the console command set "00144124".ghostint to 1.
- Engaging Vulpes and killing all the legionaries also completes the quest.
If one accepts this quest much later in the game (after receiving the quest " - If one enters the house that Boxcars is in before the initial dialogue with Vulpes, he may not appear and the four legion recruits will just stand in front of the town hall endlessly. [verified]
- If one manages to kill Vulpes without ever meeting him in Nipton and kill Boxcars before speaking to him there is no way to finish the quest. [verified]
- player.placeatme 1300e2 will place Vulpes in front of the player character and he will respond to dialogue (note that the legionaries will not follow Vulpes out of Nipton and they may be killed after Vulpes' departure with the subsequent loss of faction standing with the Legion). [verified] If Vulpes is not present (though the legionaries may be), using the console command
- If one goes to Nipton and talk to Vulpes before activating this quest, it will not show up in the Pip-Boy as completed.[verified]
