Detailed walkthrough[]
Unlucky lovers[]
The quest can be started one of two ways:
- Speak with the prostitute Joana in the courtyard at Gomorrah on the Strip, reached by going through the casino into Brimstone and through the double doors near the bar. Pass a 50 Medicine skill check to confront her about her Med-X addiction and convince her to talk privately, then follow her to her room. Speaking more with Joana will lead to her revealing about living in Gomorrah, and the backdoor dealings of a fiendish member of the Omertas, Cachino in separating her from her former lover. She will offer 200 caps or sexual services for agreeing to find out more information (the second option is only available with a male Courier, or a female with the Cherchez La Femme perk).
- Speak with Carlitos Wayne in the mess hall of the Vault 21 Hotel. Pass a 40 Speech check to initiate dialogue that will eventually lead to Carlitos advising them to avoid Gomorrah and hint that he's worried about Joana and the other girls working there. He will agree to pay 200 caps upfront for helping him with Joana and another 200 promised upon completion.
Once the player character has agreed to help either of them, they must go to the other one in their respective location to tell them about each other, back and forth until Carlitos and Joana agree to work on a plan to help get her out of Gomorrah and free from the Omertas' clutches. Carlitos also suggests the player character seek out a couple of hired hands to get some extra protection for the plan, with the quest marker directing them to the Atomic Wrangler Casino in Freeside, where two men named Big Beard and Little Beard can be convinced to cash in their debt to Carlitos by helping out.
Escaping Gomorrah[]
After preparation have been made, return to Joana one last time, where she tells them to wait until midnight/12 a.m. for her and a few other working girls to get ready. Sleep or wait until after the time has passed and speak with Joana again. She will change into a disguise and walked to the casino floor, where a couple of disguised hookers will be waiting for Joana. Once they are assembled, speak with her yet again to get the group moving to the front doors, leaving Gomorrah and the Strip to Freeside.
Outside the north gate, Joana and her friends will turn right, going down the side road to where Carlitos (and the Beards if hired) is waiting. Just after speaking with Carlitos, however, four Omerta thugs will ambush the group. One can either incite them to attack or get them to back down by passing either: two Strength attribute checks (8 & 9); two Speech skills checks (75 & 85); or one of two Barter checks to pay them off with 500 (85 Barter) or 1000 caps (75 Barter). Whichever way the confrontation goes, Carlitos and Joana must survive through it, otherwise the quest will fail.
Once the Omerta thugs are dead or driven off, Carlitos will thank the player character, offering a choice of reward between the agreed-upon 200 additional caps or declining a reward for Karma gain. Alternatively, if one started the quest with Carlitos, a 65 Barter skill check is available to gain 400 caps, for a total of 600 caps with the starting 200 caps. Joana will also thank the player character and help them out by mentioning additional details about Cachino working behind the backs of the Omertas, triggering How Little We Know (if not already started or completed). The lot of them will then run to the gates of Freeside to finally escape, completing the quest.

- Completing How Little We Know will instantly fail this quest regardless of its resolution.
- Despite the sense of urgency upon reaching Freeside with the girls, following them to Carlitos isn't necessary.
- After dealing with the ambush and saying goodbye to Carlitos and Joana, the group will all exit Freeside via the Freeside gate near King's School of Impersonation. Once they have used the gate, all of the group appear to disappear, including the disguised girls and Big and Little Beard (if the Beards have been hired).
- Carlitos, Joana and the rest of the group disappear from the game after finishing the quest if they stay alive, despite the fact that Carlitos and Joana have dialogue proposing that the Courier can meet them afterward. If one quickly talks to Joana or Carlitos after dealing with the Gomorrah thugs, or if they re-enable Joana, she will say "I am happy to see you again. Carlitos and I have been living here since our escape." This may suggest that Carlitos and Joana were originally intended to eventually find a new home after escaping.
- Killing any Omerta thugs might cause this quest to become unable to complete, since Joana might turn hostile (it is possible to take out all the guards and still continue this quest).
- The wait function cannot be used in the Gomorrah's main lobby while waiting on Joana to approach the two disguised hookers.
- If one attempts to wait while Joana is waiting with the other girls, the quest will fail.
- Even if they have been escorted to Carlitos, waiting will still make this quest fail.
- If one decides to attack the Omerta thugs before they engage in conversation in Freeside, all Omertas in Gomorrah will turn hostile upon returning. This can be avoided by letting the thugs converse before attacking.
Behind the scenes[]
The quest name serves as a reference to two songs of the same name, Bye Bye Love by The Everly Brothers, and Bye Bye Love by The Cars.
Bugs[]
When the Omerta thugs appear and turn hostile, they remain friendly to the player character and only attack Carlitos and the Beard brothers if present. This is because their dialogue script adds them to the Omerta faction after choosing a dialogue option that turns them hostile, instead of initiating combat.[verified]
After running back and forth a few times, the dialogue option to get Joana to run away might fail to appear. A high enough Speech skill may be required in order to convince her. [verified]-
When leading Joana and the disguised hookers outside the gate to Freeside, the Securitrons posted outside the gate can become hostile, attacking all included people. Killing them gives infamy for the strip but letting them kill Joana fails the quest. [verified] - When Joana and the disguised hookers are waiting in the Gomorrah lobby the game can crash when exiting the strip, avoid this by allowing all four of them to leave first. [verified]
- After escorting Joana and the disguised hookers to Freeside; Carlitos might not appear making the quest un-completable when Joana, the disguised hookers, and the Omerta thugs stand around and do nothing. Killing the Omerta thugs won't work since Joana, and the disguised hookers, still need Carlitos to appear to advance the quest dialogue. Reloading the auto-save from entering Freeside can fix this. - Once the group reaches Freeside, the thugs that are supposed to interrupt the escape, sometimes won't appear. This can be bypassed by using the console command "setstage 00110a65 90" and talking first to Carlitos once (before or after the command), then to Joana. [verified]
- If the player character fast travels to The Strip North Gate once leaving the Gomorrah Casino, as opposed to actually escorting Joana and the disguised hookers, one or both of the hookers can glitch into the gate itself. This does not actually affect the quest as it's completed if Joana alone survives. [verified]
- When escorting Joana and the disguised hookers past the Securitrons on the Freeside end of the gate to and from the strip, the game may suddenly crash, leading to a black screen before being booted to the Playstation Home screen as if one had quit the game. [verified]
- Carlitos and Joana won't appear in the game if the Courier has advanced far enough in the quest How Little We Know, even after starting conversation with both, making the quest impossible to complete. [verified]
- To fix this on PC, use the following console commands: For Carlitos: prid 0011f87a, resurrect, enable while standing in the same area of Vault 21 where he normally resides. For Joana: prid 112471, enable, moveto player while standing in the Gomorrah courtyard.
- The downside of this method is that once the Courier has escorted her and the disguised hookers out of Gomorrah, they may not move. A solution to this is to start combat with Joana, leave Gomorrah, then go back in and restart dialogue with her. After that, exit Gomorrah, enter Freeside, and Joana and the disguised hookers should appear, resuming the quest.
- So far there isn't a way to fix this on consoles, as there are no console commands, except by reloading another previous save, but the bug might repeat.
- Sometimes when Joana and the hookers are waiting in the Gommorah lobby, Joana will give the dialog for after the Courier has slept with her. There is no known fix for this bug.
