Detailed walkthrough[]
The quest is started by first traveling to the mining village of Sloan east-northeast of Goodsprings; it can be reached by following Interstate 15 from Jean Sky Diving, though one will encounter several Powder Gangers along the way. When close to the sandbag barricades on the road, the mining foreman, Chomps Lewis will approach and warn the player character against going any further due to an infestation of deathclaws that has blocked off all traffic to New Vegas, and will suggest the longer alternative route of going through Primm. Asking further questions, he reveals that the deathclaws primarily nest around the once active Quarry Junction, a byproduct of the workers' operations slowing to a halt after the Powder Gangers pilfered their supply of dynamite. Without help from the NCR, the workers have only been able to wait and warn off travelers from the danger ahead.
One can offer to deal with the deathclaw problem at the quarry, and Lewis' response will depend on the player character's level being either lower than, or equal to/greater than 15; the latter will earn a vote of confidence from him that they might be able to handle the problem, along with a gift of 5 stimpaks as well as 5 super stimpaks, while the former earns a remark that he does not think that they would be able to do it (he won't provide stimparks either), and advises them to turn back and leave with the suggestion of a safer route to New Vegas (assuming that was their goal). Should one insist on trying, Lewis will simply warn them not to expect a rescue if they end up struggling.
The main entrance to Quarry Junction resides slightly north-northwest of Sloan, with at least one deathclaw residing outside. The inner circular area of the quarry itself hosts several deathclaws, including the main targets, the deathclaw alpha male and the deathclaw mother, as eliminating them will prevent the nest from expanding further and eventually endangering Sloan. The alpha male and mother tend to wander around the west and southwest areas. The mother in particular is constantly followed by a small pack of baby deathclaws, and if one or more of them should be killed before her, a notification pops up saying that she has gone berserk with rage, becoming faster and stronger. The alpha male on the other hand is by himself but has much higher HP than a regular deathclaw and inflicts greater damage.
Once the alpha male and mother at the least are eliminated, return to Chomps to receive his gratitude and garner NCR fame. Any remaining deathclaws at Quarry Junction will disappear after 48-73 in-game hours.
Notes[]
- It is not required to talk to Lewis to complete the quest, though when speaking to him after killing the deathclaws, one won't receive the stimpaks.
- If the deathclaw mother and/or deathclaw alpha male are killed in a way that does not give the player character XP (e.g. killing them with dynamite dropped on the ground to support a powder charge), the kill will still count towards the quest.
- If Chomps Lewis is dead, the player character will not be able to finish the quest for NCR fame.
- Finishing this quest will not make quarry workers appear in Quarry Junction, rather they will show up in Boulder City and will patronize the Big Horn Saloon. Additionally, the bartender Ike will mention that "some badass" wiped out the deathclaws.
