At the Monastery of Spinjitzu, Sora's attempts to wield her Elemental Powers without Riyu's aid fail yet again, while Arin is busy testing himself on the training course. When he becomes discouraged by his failure of progress, Lloyd encourages him and Sora both that they can progress. Sora, meanwhile, starts to suspect that she's only using power gained from Riyu, as she can't feel the power within herself. Lloyd, however, notes that each Elemental Master experiences their power in a different way, and that Sora simply needs to learn how to master hers.
Their discussion is suddenly interrupted by the arrival of the Destiny's Bounty 4.0, last seen when Kai took it to explore the merged realm. However, the craft is on fire and heading for a crash, and only by boarding it and enacting quick repairs are they able to land the craft somewhat gently. Exploring, they discover strange damage, and a map that they hope leads to Kai's last location. They decide to take the new Bounty and see if they can find their missing friend.
Meanwhile, in Imperium, Dorama is working on something called "the Photac" under the direction of Dr. LaRow. When Lord Ras arrives and demands a status report, LaRow comments that while Dorama may get their prototype working, he's not the person they need to mass-produce the device. The Ninja then arrive in a rocky landscape and find Craglings from the former Realm of Madness engaged in battle with a pair of Earth Dragons. They join the battle on the side of the dragons, who flee, only for the Craglings to prove to have a Ninja ally of their own: Nya, Master of Water.
Nya quickly explains that the dragons have been attacking the Craglings, and after being introduced to Lloyd's students she questions whether he's seen Jay, to which he is forced to reply in the negative. Nya then brings the newcomers to Crag-Nor, the Cragling king, who is less than pleased to see Riyu in their midst due to the ongoing troubles his people have with the dragons. He allows them into the village at Nya's request, and during a feast-of mud-Nya explains that she came across the Realm of Madness, now known as the Kingdom of Madness, after the Merge while making her way back towards Ninjago. Unfortunately, the Earth Dragons' realm ended up next to the Craglings' home, and they began feeding on mud from the Craglings' sacred burial ground. The power they drew from this consumption increased their own size and power while draining the Craglings' life force, causing them to begin falling apart.
Nya found Kai with the Craglings, and the two joined in the effort to help them repel the dragons only to find themselves outmatched. It was Nya who set the Bounty 4.0 on autopilot and sent it back to the monastery in hopes of finding help, while Kai disappeared. As it happens, Kai has almost made his way back to the Cragling Village right as Nya and the others are discussing him, only to stumble upon the Earth Dragons sleeping outside it. His cries for help reach the ears of his friends, and the veteran Ninja are soon locked in battle with the dragons.
Riyu gives Sora a power boost, and she converts her bike back into a mech and teams up with Nya. Arin and the Craglings join the battle as well, but Sora's mech comes apart in midair when she loses control of her power. However, Riyu then uses his power to supercharge the stolen powers of the Earth Dragons, causing them to revert to their normal size. The Craglings' Sacred Field is thus restored, and with it the life energy of the Craglings. Riyu is left exhausted by his efforts, but awakens to find that the Craglings now regard him as a hero. Sadly, while Nya and Kai are all praise for Lloyd's work as a teacher thus far, Sora regards herself as a failure.
