In a flashback, Lloyd is seen training with Wu during a thunderstorm and struggling to strike moving targets as a result of the weather. As Wu instructs him, he cannot always control his environment, but he can find peace within himself whatever his outside circumstances. With this knowledge, Lloyd is able to succeed in the exercise. Back in the present, Lloyd finds himself in a chaotic situation indeed, trying to help the various escaped dragons in the battle with the Claws of the Imperium.
Meanwhile, Arin and Sora are riding Sora the dragon in search of Riyu, and decide to investigate a security station in the event that there's a recording of his capture. Sending dragon Sora back to the battle, the pair find no evidence of Riyu's capture. However, Percival of the Imperium Teen Protection Force has indeed captured Riyu, and delivers him directly to Empress Beatrix. She contacts Lord Ras, who was out in his flying craft, and summons him back to the palace.
Kai and Nya, still puzzling over their unexpected meeting, realize they were both led to their mysterious new location by the same strange whispering form. Identifying their surroundings as what appears to be another monastery, they spot the glowing form again just before it descends into a large machine. Back in the Imperium square, Wyldfyre, Lloyd, and their dragon allies continue to struggle against the Photac Beasts. Arin and Sora contact Lloyd with their bad news, and Lloyd tries to convince Sora that she can use her powers without Riyu's aid if they're unable to find him.
However, the Ninja-in-training discover where Riyu has been taken, shortly after Ras arrives to join the empress at the dragon's holding cell. Determined to make an example of Riyu, Beatrix calls for Dr. LaRow so that the dragon's energy can be completely drained. When Ras protests, as it goes against his own plans, Beatrix reminds him that she is the ruler of Imperium and refuses to be questioned. In the strange monastery, Kai and Nya investigate the machine, and are stunned when the mysterious voice becomes audible as that of Master Wu. Though reluctant, they decide to connect the machine so that it can fulfill whatever function it is designed for.
Sora and Arin head for the palace, only for Arin to trip up and alert a couple of guards. Fortunately, they are able to convince the pair that some citizens were insulting them, and then sneak through a window into the room where Riyu is confined. Before they can reach him, however, Dr. LaRow and her assistant Jordana arrive, followed shortly by Beatrix and Ras. Back in the square, Lloyd is overwhelmed by the chaos of the battle between dragons and Photacs.
Unexpectedly, the ghostly form of Wu appears, and Lloyd is reminded of his long-ago training exercise. Regaining his composure, he responds to a message from Arin and Sora and decides to change tactics. He leads Wyldfyre and the dragons to attack the palace, which has the benefit of providing a distraction to lure Beatrix and Ras out of the room where Riyu is about to have his energy drained. Rapton and his men, joined by Beatrix and Ras, attack the dragons in response.
In the strange monastery, Nya puts a restless Kai to work helping her get the machine operational, and his welding and kicking actually succeed. The device opens up, and from it emerges a familiar face: Zane, Ninja of Ice. The monastery's systems then alert Zane to danger, and he learns that the monastery they're in happens to be located beneath Imperium. Inside the palace, Arin and Sora attempt to reach Riyu but are halted by Dr. LaRow and Jordana, the latter of whom claims to be Sora's rival.
Outside the palace, a strange structure emerges from underground in the midst of the battle, and the door opens to admit Kai, Nya, and Zane.

This marks the first occasion in which Sam Vincent, voice of Lloyd beginning with season eight of Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu, voices Lloyd as a child. Previously, Jillian Michaels voiced all appearances of Lloyd as a child, as well as his appearances prior to season eight.
