This article is about the character from the Classic dimension. You may be looking for other versions of Matilda. |
- "I try not to be angry. It's no good for you. The other birds tease me about my serenity, which annoys me. Actually, it doesn't just annoy me, it makes me FURIOUS!"
- — Matilda, The World of Angry Birds Official Guide[8]
Matilda, originally known as the White Bird,[4] is a character that appears in the Angry Birds series. She is a white bird and a member of the Angry Birds. Matilda is a pacifist and, as the "mother hen" of the flock, takes good care of the other birds with her homemade meals and medicine. However, she is also extremely short-tempered, and any criticism of her food or destruction of the environment drives her to an uncontrollable rage.
The character first appeared in Poached Eggs in the original Angry Birds, thus being the first female character in the series. Being a chicken,[7] Matilda is able to lay explosive eggs to destroy pig structures when furious. Since her debut, she has been a recurrent member of the franchise's cast.
Appearance[]
Matilda is an egg-shaped, limbless bird covered in white feathers. She has a large, oval beak, two small eyes, and three short, yellow spots on her cheeks implied to be make-up,[15] and three black feathers with squarish ends on her head and on her tail. This design was common until 2013, and it has become rare since then. A Year of the Dragon animation also showed her in a similar design, giving her much smaller eyes and thicker eyebrows.[20]
Starting with the Angry Birds Coca-Cola short, Matilda received a different, more feminine design. While she keeps most key aspects of her previous design, her eyes are larger and completely round, and have small eyelashes on them. Her crest and tail feathers were modified as well, being black feathers with pink, round ends. In addition, she now has two feathers on her tail instead of three. The yellow spots on her cheeks are now pink.
Grenade Bird[]
The Grenade Bird (or simply Green Bird) is an early design of Matilda shown off in early concept art on the official Rovio Museum website.[1] They have a spherical body with greenish-yellow feathers on its body, that has darker green spots, one on its forehead and two on its right cheek. It has three rectangular black crests on its head, and another three black feathers for its tail. They have dark green rectangular eyebrows, constantly squinting eyes, and a pointed yellow beak.
In the files for the original Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons, Matilda's sprites are internally referred to as "BIRD_GREEN" and her egg bombs are referred to as "GRENADE", which suggests this bird is Matilda's prototype design. Unlike Matilda, this bird would have likely dropped grenades instead of laying eggs.
Personality[]
Matilda has a nurturing and motherly personality, often doting over the eggs and caring deeply for the other birds.[11][9] As the "mother hen" of the flock, she sees her friends as her own children, giving them discipline and ensuring they eat their vegetables and go to bed on time.[11] Matilda believes in a healthy lifestyle and tries to pass that on to the rest of the birds, who try to put up with her health concoctions despite their questionable flavor.[3] While she believes everyone appreciates her constant care and interference, it instead turns out to be more of an annoyance. Her signature dishes, like her "extra dense cabbage stew", are not well received, but she remains oblivious to this.[11][9]
- "I love gardening. It's so relaxing. Unless I find out someone's traipsed through the flowerbeds and then THEY'LL WISH THEY WERE NEVER HATCHED!"
- — Matilda, The World of Angry Birds Official Guide[8]
An "earth mother" at heart, Matilda has a profound love for all things natural and sustainable.[4][11] When she is not looking after the eggs, she can usually be seen tending her garden.[9] To quiet her mind and commune with nature, she often goes for long walks and collects stones, pebbles, and other things that catch her eye, using these trinkets to create a necklace that she hopes symbolizes a future peace.[3] Matilda prefers peaceful resolutions and longs for harmony between the birds and pigs.[5] She tries to see the good in every creature, even the pigs, and believes one day there will be peace between the two groups.[8][4]
Despite her otherwise calm demeanor, Matilda is extremely easy to anger and struggles to control her temper.[11] She is overly protective of both the eggs and her garden and is provoked if someone harms them.[9] Although she wishes for peace, the idea of everyone not getting along enrage her.[11] She takes any criticism or teasing very poorly, reacting with the "rage of a thousand falcons" at even the slightest negative comment.[11][8] She hates pollution, and as a result, the pigs' rash exploitation of wildlife and waste of natural resources infuriate her.[3] If provoked, Matilda can make threats or result to violence.[8][21] Even Red, who is said to be "the angriest of the birds", is terrified by her wrath.[16][21] However, she can come back to her senses if she realizes that her ire has caused harm.[22]
Game appearances[]
Angry Birds[]
In the original Angry Birds, and its multiple re-releases, Matilda is one of the core playable characters. She is introduced in Poached Eggs, specifically Poached Eggs 2-14, as the fifth character in the game overall. She appears in all subsequent chapters except The Big Setup. In levels and most cutscenes, Matilda appears in her original design, though the profiles of The Mighty League and the cutscenes of Piggy Farm and Jurassic Pork depict her in her design from Angry Birds Toons. Earlier versions of the game also had her with a more concerned expression, which was replaced with an angrier one in the v3.0.0 update, released in December 2012.
In gameplay, Matilda can only be used in the levels where she appears, when it is her turn to be launched from the slingshot. When the player taps the screen after he is launched, she will drop an egg which will explode upon colliding with an obstacle as she flies off. This power is most destructive when used just before Matilda crashes into an obstacle, but can also be used to make Matilda herself reach targets that are high up.[23] However, she will be unable to use her power if she crashes into something before using it. Her ability can also only be used once. Matilda is of moderate strength and loses all her speed upon hitting a block of any material, destroying it in the process. Upon beating the level, the player is given 10,000 bonus points for each Matilda that was not used.
Angry Birds Seasons[]
Matilda first appears in Trick or Treat 1-9 in Angry Birds Seasons, back when it was known as Angry Birds Halloween. She would be a playable character in all of the episodes that follow. Matilda's ability had no alterations when putting her in the game. However, in Piglantis, it was revealed that Matilda's ability will go along with water. If the water is deep enough, then Matilda's explosive egg will be able to burst out of the surface, and hit possible structures above it. If Matilda is slung into the water, she will sink and then resurface.
There was also a version of Matilda in Hogs and Kisses unofficially named "Female White Bird", as she had never been given an official name. She is shown to be significantly smaller than the Girl Bird in some photos, who was the same size as the regular Red Bird. However, in others, she was just as big as the regular Matilda. It was shown that the Female White Bird and Matilda were in a romantic relationship. However, this had been way before official genders were given to the birds and have not been counted as actual canon. Later in The World Of Angry Birds, it is indirectly stated that both are the same character.
Angry Birds Rio[]
Matilda appears as the fourth bird unlocked in Angry Birds Rio, first appearing in Smugglers' Den's 70 Star and Feather Award levels, but later made her proper debut in the 6th level of Jungle Escape. After this, she appears in all the following episodes as a playable character. Matilda's ability is almost identical to her two prior appearances except that her egg bomb is more powerful, and can make much more damage. For example, if she lays an egg on Luiz during Beach Volley, Luiz will fly in the air; which is quite useful, as Luiz is very strong and can destroy many bricks. (along with destroying even more if beach balls are laid out afterward)
If used right, Matilda can be a very versatile and powerful character to have during boss fights. Matilda's egg bomb is very harmful to bosses, taking a very major hit. (as you usually will need 2-4 of them to defeat the boss) It is recommended that if possible, fire Matilda very close to the boss and lay the egg bomb on him, causing Matilda to fly off, where she will hopefully hit TNT or a weakly supported structure.
When the game was updated in 2014 to promote Rio 2, all of the birds were redesigned to match her appearance in Angry Birds Toons, (see below) Notably, this featured a more prominently feminine Matilda, as fans had been initially very confused about her gender. (though at this point it had been confirmed that she was clearly a female)
Angry Birds Chrome[]
Matilda returns in a near identical role to her outing in Classic. She retains the same ability of egg-dropping, and returns in the episodes that Chrome brings back. Matilda also returns in Chrome's new episode, Chrome Dimension.
Angry Birds Google+[]
Matilda appears in a near identical fashion as her appearance in Chrome. She returns for both old levels as well as Teamwork, Google+'s new set of levels.
Angry Birds Friends[]
Originally, Matilda was introduced the same level and episode that she appeared in the original game, although the first chapter in the game was Surf and Turf, rather than Poached Eggs. In modern updates of the game however, she would debut in the Piggy Tower in level 5–11.
Her ability stays the same as the other games, but with some minor changes in damage, consistent with her fix from Angry Birds Rio. However, her ability was temporarily replaced in the Holiday Oink Tournaments with an Explosive Present Dropping ability.
She received a design change in the mobile version, where it now uses the Toons Design, where she is still frowning and the shriveled sprite is the same as injured.
Angry Birds Flash[]
Matilda was planned to appear in this game which would had her having the same ability as before.
Angry Birds Fuji TV[]
She however is dressed up as a ninja.
Bad Piggies[]
While she does not appear in the game, her voice is used for the birds and she appears within promotional material for Bad Piggies.
Angry Birds Go![]
Matilda is featured in Angry Birds Go! as a playable character, and multiple changes are made to her character. For one, she uses her Toons animation in-game, which hadn't happened before. She also, like all of the other characters, uses a 3D model, which was a first for Rovio, as all their games had been in 2D animation up until that point.
Like all the other playable characters in the game, Matilda has her kart, which is the Tub-Copter. This is the kart that she is featured within Telepods, promotions, and other merchandise.
Gameplay[]
Matilda was first featured in Air like a boss. You would have to beat her 3 times in a race to unlock her as a playable character; and like most of the other characters, she had a different ability. (in which she would throw spinning eggs at the player)
However, once the game was updated, the boss battles were then removed from the game and replaced with the campaigns. Now you have to get one star on campaign level 4, race 5.
Matilda also appears in races as an opponent in all themes of the game.
Her ability as a playable character is to throw egg bombs at the rival racers. While this ability is effective in the players that it hits, it isn't as widespread as other character's abilities, or abundant.
Angry Birds Go! Create[]
Matilda once again appears in this game being a playable character in this game.
Angry Birds Epic[]
Matilda is included as a playable character in Angry Birds Epic, having the role of the medic and like all the other birds, can be upgraded and changed to the player's preference.
Once she is introduced she becomes a very prominent character, and is involved as an option in most battles and appears in the cutscenes.
Gameplay[]
- Main article: Epic Characters
Angry Birds 2[]
Matilda is included as a playable character in Angry Birds 2, which had been introduced after a rather long time where Rovio did not introduce slingshot-based games with Matilda involved. As most of the returning characters in the game (except for Red), Matilda was given the same ability she originally had in the first games.
The game also introduces computer animation for the birds and pigs, which had never happened before in the previous slingshot-based games, where there were instead multiple sprites for the birds that were used when they were idle, flying, corpses, etc. Matilda also appears in her "Angry Birds Toons" animation style, as prominently female. (along with her voice parts)
Gameplay[]
Matilda has the same ability as she had in the original games, which is to shoot egg bombs vertically downwards. Once again, the egg bombs aren't extremely effective in terms of destruction, but they are much more effective in being "bombs". They can cause nearby objects to slightly shake, and can also destroy balloons and weak objects even if they are not directly hit.
Matilda also flies to the right once her ability is used, which is a feature that was in all of the other slingshot games. (excluding the Star Wars series) This is useful, as the levels tend to be much bigger than the original, so there are many more structures to knock down and there is more of an opportunity for Matilda to cause damage. In the other games, she looks squiggly, but in Angry Birds 2, she looks normal, she just spins.
Like all of the other birds, Matilda can level up if the player obtains her feathers, which increases the number of points she earns when she is used.
Angry Birds Fight![]
Matilda was involved in the Angry Birds Fight! game as one of the 6 playable and customizable characters. Other than this, she also appears on the matching board as one of the 6 icons.
Matilda often appears in promotional material and trailers for the game.
Unlike the other newer Angry Birds games, which made their designs that followed the Toons animations, this game directly takes Matilda's design from the series. (excluding her "matching" icon) The game also uses computer animation, allowing Matilda to be much more lively and animated.
As of August 1, 2017, the game has been discontinued and taken down from the Play and App stores, and servers have since been shut down.
Gameplay[]
Each bird had their unique ability if the player was able to match 4 or more of their icons. Matilda's unique ability was to lay an egg bomb and erase panels in a vertical line while digging into the enemy's board as well.
Your success depends on how many points you rack up, so matching quickly is dire for the game. If you don't manage to make enough points by matching the bird icons in 3 or more lines, Matilda or other birds that you use will be defeated by the opponent.
Angry Birds POP![]
Matilda initially wasn't included in the game, as none of the flock members were, excluding Stella, as it was part of her series. However, she was introduced as a limited edition character and was playable for a short time. Afterward, the original flock members slowly began to replace the Stella characters, and the game was soon branded as a regular Angry Birds game. She is now included in the "Free the Hatchlings" portion, which was originally "Free the Critters", led by Willow.
Matilda is again, seemingly simple trend, in her animation style rather than her classic design.
Gameplay[]
As a limited edition character, Matilda had the same ability as the "Love Pop" by Shakira, though it is called the "Flock Pop". Unlike Shakira's ability, Matilda's bubble would be able to add time to time-based levels.
The purpose of Matilda's levels is to free the Hatchlings, who are encased in clear bubbles and surrounded by colored ones.
Currently, Matilda is included as a permanent character and is featured with a different ability. Her ability (which was previously Willow's) is to shoot a bubble that colors all the surrounding bubbles the color of the next bubble. (known as the "Splash Pop")
Angry Birds Blast![]
Matilda is featured in the game as a part of the levels, rather than a playable character which is strange for the Angry Birds series, as before the game birds were always featured as playable characters. This time around, she is involved as an icon like all the other birds.
Like all the other newer installments of Angry Birds, Matilda uses her newer animation design. However, on the matching board, her appearance is much more exaggerated and her face is made much larger compared to her body.
Gameplay[]
Matilda does not have any unique abilities or features, unlike her appearances in other games. Instead, the player's objective is to pop 2 or more of the same colored blocks to free the birds incased. The color of the bird's block is determined by its feathers, so of course, Matilda's blocks are white. If the player frees a block with Matilda encased inside, she will fly off the screen and the player will receive points for it.
She also appears with bottles in some levels. If the player hits blocks next to her three times, she will start to throw the bottles in random directions that will destroy other blocks in a 1x1 cross figure, helping the player.
Matilda also appears as her hatchling counterpart in nests where there are two of them in each nest. If a block of the same color as her color is next to the nest, she will pop it. If it's done two times, the nest will disappear.
Angry Birds Stomper Redemption[]
Matilda once again appears in this game but it's unknown what her role is in this game.
Angry Birds Whacker[]
Matilda appears on the arcade machine.
Angry Birds Reloaded[]
Matilda appears in Angry Birds Reloaded starting with Hot Pursuit and appearing in most episodes except for the Eagle Island episodes., where her ability is used with Courtney. Her ability is the same as in previous games.

Book Appearances[]
Angry Birds: Mystery of the Green Bird[]
While out and about, Matilda discovers a green feather. Matilda takes it to mean that there's another bird on the island. Red dismisses it, but it catches the attention of a Piggy scout, who informs King Pig. The pigs end up sending a Fake Green Bird to infiltrate The Flock. When the bird arrives, he becomes fast friends with Matilda, who gives him a necklace, dubbing him "Hard Head". Matilda takes Hard Head to meet the rest of The Flock, and they throw a party in his honor. Later in the story, after Hard Head is found out to be a pig, Matilda still voices optimism that there may be a Real Green Bird out there somewhere.
Angry Birds: Mystery of the Lost Treasure[]
Matilda makes a brief cameo alongside Bomb during The Flock's celebration at the end of the book.
Angry Birds: Red Bird To The Rescue![]
When Red returns one of The Flock's stolen Eggs to the nest, Matilda is the one to congratulate Red.
Angry Birds Comics[]
Matilda acts in the comics very similarly to how she acts in Angry Birds Toons. She's a peace-loving optimist who usually serves as the mother figure in The Flock. Her gardening prowess is played up, with multiple stories focusing on her agricultural skills.
Angry Birds: Stella and the Hunt for the Jade Egg[]
While Matilda herself only appears twice, her personal possession, The Jade Egg, is pivotal to the plot. Two days before the story begins, Matilda's Jade Egg Pendant is stolen by the Pigs. This Jade pendant is allegedly the source of Matilda's power. Stella and Bubbles, after being told they're too young to guard The Eggs by Red, decide to sneak into Pig City to retrieve The Jade Egg. Stella and Bubbles succeed in their retrieval of the trinket, and return it to Matilda. When Red continues to give the two a hard time about guarding The Eggs, Matilda pretends to still feel ill, causing Red, while not entirely being convinced, to allow Stella and Bubbles to help Matilda guard The Eggs.
Kaiken[]
Matilda's presence in the Kaiken eductaional series is limited to a single cameo at the end of Sing The ABCs, where she and the other birds agree to sing the ABCs with Girl Bird. Matilda's design in the book is especially bazar. Her body shape is definitely based on her Angry Birds Chrome sprites, but her basic appearance is modeled after her Toons design. What makes this even more odd is that every other bird in the stories use their Chrome designs.
Angry Birds: Bomb's Best Birthday[]
When The Flock find that Bomb has quarantined himself for his birthday, Matilda says that they can't leave Bomb without a celebration on his birthday, causing Red to form a plan to celebrate his party long-distance. Matilda is the one to bake Bomb's birthday cake for the celebration.
Angry Birds: Cheer Up, Chuck![]
First being seen cooking, Matilda later takes part in the confrontation with Corporal Pig when he attempts to steal The Flock's Eggs.
Angry Birds: Stella and the Egg Tree[]
Matilda is the only one of the original five Flock members to not appear in-person. She has a brief cameo in Corporal Pig's thought bubble at the start of the book.
Angry Birds: Red And The Great Fling-Off[]
Matilda is one of the attendees of The Great Fling-Off, though it's unknown if she participated herself. During the event, Red and Chuck manage to save The Eggs, but soon begin bickering about who will win next year's Fling-Off. Matilda talks some sense into them, saying that the two are already winners for saving The Eggs.
Angry Birds: The Attack of The Monster[]
Matilda plays a central role in the book's plot. Early in the story, she decides to leave the nest to tend to her garden. She spots a berry bush with appealing-looking berries, and tries one. This berry gives her mysterious properties that periodically transform her into a monster. The Pigs kidnap and attempt to ransom off Matilda to The Flock, but she breaks out while in her monster form. Her monster form is eventually stopped when The Blues get it to fall into a trap.
Angry Birds: The Tale of a Featherless Friend[]
Matilda is a minor character throughout the book, and has the least to do out of the core five. Before the events of the story, she tells Stella about wishing upon shooting stars, which inspires Stella to wish for a friend at the start of the book. Aside from that, she only gets a couple of lines later in the book.
Angry Birds: Captain Badburger[]
When Stella and Chuck go missing one evening, Matilda becomes worried about dark forces being at play. While The Flock initially tells her that there's nothing to worry about, her suspicions are confirmed when Red spots two boats sailing by the island. While never being directly addressed by the book, it can be assumed that she took part in the battle with Captain Badburger in the later chapters. She's last seen with the rest of The Flock when Chuck is reciting his and Stella's story.
Powers and abilities[]
Matilda is renowned for her ability to lay exploding eggs, which she does when extremely angry. She is granted this ability by The Jade Egg in her possession. This powerful attack can be used to bombard enemy structures, causing significant damage.[3] In addition, her connection to nature is coupled with skills with magic, allowing her to heal herself and her friends. She is also shown to be adapt at driving all kinds of karts.
Relationships[]
Red[]
Matilda is close friends with Red and admires his devotion to protecting the eggs. However, her optimism clashes with his pessimism, causing her frustration.[8] Additionally, Red's relentless destruction when furious can invoke her own wrath.[21]
Chuck[]
Despite her attempts to see the good in everyone, Matilda struggles to tolerate Chuck,[8] being frustrated by his recklessness and hasty demeanor and believing that he does not respect her.[8][24]
Bomb[]
Although Matilda thinks Bomb is too big-headed, she claims to be secretly "quite fond" of him,[8] a connection enhanced by the black bird often turning to her herbal teas and treatments to control his explosiveness.[3]
The Blues[]
Matilda takes good care of the Blues and treats them as if they were her own children. She ensures they eat healthily and always goes check on them while they are asleep, which they appreciate.[25][26] However, their mischievousness and recklessness tend to anger Matilda, who attempts to instill discipline in them.[27]
The pigs[]
Matilda's belief that there is good in everyone extends to the pigs, despite their antagonism to the Angry Birds. She hopes that there will eventually be peace between the two groups, and this optimism extends to even King Pig.[3] Matilda has shown a degree of interest in the pigs' culture and even infiltrated a hockey match in Pig City once, helping one of the teams win when the other was cheating.[14] However, she scorns the pigs' reckless exploitation of nature and tends to sabotage their operations by destroying their fortresses with her explosive eggs.[3]
Of all the pigs, Matilda hates Chef Pig the most due to his desire to cook the eggs, finding it appalling that would want to do so. She is nevertheless secretly jealous of his cooking skills. Despite Chef Pig's attempts to steal the eggs to cook them, Matilda and the rest of the flock have always thwarted his plans.[9]

Trivia[]
- Matilda, Hal, Silver, and Stella are the only birds to not have any form of Space counterpart for Angry Birds Space.
- However, in 2024, Matilda, Hal and Stella have Space counterparts in the 3.0 update for Angry Birds Reloaded.
- Original Angry Birds artist Tuomas Erikoinen has confirmed that Matilda (referred to as "egg bird") was supposed to be female since her debut.[28]
- However, the Angry Birds Twitter account claimed she was not originally female.[29]
- However, the Angry Birds Twitter account claimed she was not originally female.[29]
- An early version of Matilda's Kombo look from the Mighty Eagle wallpaper made her look exactly like a chicken. In Summer Pignic, this is changed to a have a more similar appearance to the classic games.
- Originally, one of Matilda's cheeks became purple when she became a corpse in the slingshot games (to look like a black eye). However, it was redesigned to keep its usual yellow.
- Matilda can play the saxophone, as seen in the Toons episode Epic Sax-Off. This makes her the 6th bird known to play an instrument, the others being Hal, Willow, Poppy, Dahlia, and Luca, in that order. She is followed by Red.
- Matilda is one out of 2 birds that have abilities that involve an explosion, the other is Bomb.
- Matilda, Chuck, and Silver (original design) are the only birds of The Flock to not be circular, as Chuck is triangle-shaped, Matilda is egg-shaped, whilst Silver was shaped like an upside-down trapezoid.
- In the Summer Pignic Short Movie, Matilda herself explodes rather than laying an egg that does so.
