Punchinello is a minor antagonist in the video game Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its 3D remake, serving as the main antagonist of the third Star Piece arc. He is a clown creature resembling a Bob-Omb who wants to kill Mario and company so he can become famous.
Biography[]
When trying to rescue some of the Moleville children from the Coal Mines, Mario, Mallow and Geno eventually come across Punchinello. Mallow cites he has never heard of him, so Punchinello states he will becomes famous by defeating them. He attacks the trio by throwing several different Bob-Omb variants at them.
Eventually, when Punchinello is weakened, he decides to unleash a King Bomb to blow up Mario and company. As it comes falling down though, it crushes Punchinello. Mario, Geno and Mallow are caught in the blast, but survive. They then take the third Star Piece that Punchinello was guarding and leave.
Personality[]
Punchinello appears to be a bit of a glory hound, wanting to kill Mario and company just so he can get the fame and recognition for doing so. He claims that in the past people have called him a "hot head", implying that he has became bitter due to being called names. However, he appears to have some affable traits, introducing himself in a formal and friendly manner.
Punchinello is also very intolerant to failure, continuously trying to summon tougher Bob-Ombs when he notices that he is losing.
Trivia[]
- Punchinello has no affiliations with the Smithy Gang. He is also, along with the Axem Rangers, one of the only major bosses in the game who does not appear in the credits parade.
- However, in the Nintendo Switch remake, Punchinello is shown in the ending helping Bowser repair his castle after defeating the former in a rematch.
- Punchinello is one of the three bosses not to drop any experience nor show a victory screen upon defeating him, the others being Bowser and Smithy.
- Ted Woolsey, translator for the SNES localization, originally wanted to name Punchinello "James Bomb", a reference to James Bond.
- While the idea was nixed, one reference to James Bond would remain, that being Punchinello's introduction quote "Nello...Punchinello!", a play on Bond's catchphrase "Bond, James Bond."
