~ Mongul to Superman. |
Mongul is a minor antagonist in the DC Animated Universe.
He was the tyrannical ruler of the planet War World and would then go on to target Superman for taking away his leadership there. Mongul consequently becomes a rogue of the Justice League too in the process.
He was voiced by Eric Roberts, who also played Salvatore Maroni in The Dark Knight, James Munroe in The Expendables, Governor Hughes in The Human Centipede III (Final Sequence), Dark Danny in Danny Phantom, Ezechiel Pregzt in Alone in the Dark, The Master in the Doctor Who movie, Paul Snider in Star 80, Dr. Albert Beck in the Stalked by My Doctor series, Nash in National Security, and Richard L'Italien in Oz.
Biography[]
To distract his subjects from the daily oppression and poverty they faced under his rule, Mongul regularly hosted gladiatorial combat, which usually led to the death of whoever lost the match. Upon capturing Superman, Mongul pitted him against War World's champion, Draaga, who Superman managed to defeat. However, when Superman refused to kill him, Warworld's populace begin to rebel against their ruler in favor of the Man of Steel. To counter this, Mongul challenged Superman to a match, secretly threatening Superman to deliberately lose the match or else Mongul would destroy Draaga's home planet. However, with the combined forces of Superman, the Justice League, and Draaga, Mongul was defeated and dethroned. It is not known what happened to Mongul immediately following these events.
Returning several years later to seek revenge, Mongul ambushed Superman on his birthday and trapped him in the dream world of the Black Mercy, seeking to take over Earth without Superman to protect it, forcing Wonder Woman and Batman to take Mongul on while simultaneously attempting to free Superman from the Black Mercy. Ultimately, Mongul was defeated once more and ensnared by the Black Mercy, leaving him in a comatose state. Mongul's final fate is unrevealed. Though paralyzed by the Black Mercy, he is still alive and was presumably imprisoned, living indefinitely within his dream world. Judging from the noise heard inside Mongul's heard, the fantasy he's currently living out is quite grim.

“ | Mongul: The people want fights. That's what I give them. Superman: You're just giving them a cheap substitute for what they really need, like food, housing, and medicine. Mongul: (slapping Superman) No one talks to me that way. Superman: No? That wasn't your name they were chanting out there. It was mine. Mongul: Someone else said that to me. It was Draaga. The mob loved him, and he wanted to change things, too, but I convinced him the old ways were best. Superman: How? Mongul: (to his Chancellor) Show him. (the Chancellor activates a surveillance feed showing a large weapon pointed into the sky) Its power can decimate a planet. And that's exactly what I would have done to Draaga's if he hadn't cooperated. I can do the same to your world. Superman: You're too late. Krypton's already gone. Mongul: No matter. Any planet will do; even Draaga's. Superman: You can't. Mongul: Oh, really? Now listen, and listen carefully. If you want that planet spared, you're going to have one last fight: against me, and you're going to lose badly. Understand? I thought so. |

„ |

It reads the heart's desire and feeds the individual a totally convincing simulation of it. Batman: So, he's dreaming. Mongul: Oh, far deeper than any dream. I wonder where he thinks he is. Sitting on a throne, ruling the universe, all you human garbage fawning at his feet. More honest, don't you think, than this pretense of being a selfless hero? |
