Half-breed trash, I won't let you ruin my plans. All this was my doing. With Orm's mommy issues and sense of entitlement, coaxing him into war was child's play. Frankly, he irks the shit out of me. Once we've sunk the surface world, I'll slit his throat and claim the treasures of Atlantis—AAAGH!!
A greedy treasure hunter with an advanced suit of armor that greatly increased his combat potential, Black Manta orchestrated a war between Atlantis and the surface world by bombing the former and manipulating King Orm into retaliating. He did so in an attempt to plunder the riches of Atlantis, although he was defeated by Aquaman and imprisoned.
He later joined the Suicide Squad, a covert government-run team of supervillains that gave its members reduced prison sentences in exchange for their services. As a member of the Squad, Manta rebelled against the apocalyptic reign of the tyrant Darkseid who had invaded and taken control of Earth. Alongside his squadmates, Black Manta fought heroically against Darkseid's forces and was ultimately killed.
He was voiced by Harry Lennix in Throne of Atlantis and by Dave Fennoy in Hell to Pay. Lennix has also played Martian Manhunter in the DC Extended Universe and Fennoy has also voiced Pong Krell in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
In an alternate timeline known as "Flashpoint" which was inadvertently caused by the Flash, Aquaman was the morally corrupt King of Atlantis who was locked in a world-spanning war with his former lover Wonder Woman and her Amazon armies. Aquaman sunk Western Europe and used it as a base, whereas Wonder Woman conquered the United Kingdom and named it New Themyscira. For whatever reason, Black Manta served as one of Aquaman's chief enforcers in Flashpoint.
At one point, Aquaman's armies intercepted an American vessel in their waters that was looking for the Atlantean doomsday weapon, a world-destroying bomb. The ship, captained by Deathstroke and Lex Luthor, was comprised of superhuman mercenaries. The Atlanteans emerged from the ocean and attacked the vessel. During the battle, Black Manta saved Garth and Kaldur'ahm from Deathstroke and subdued the enemy mercenary with his ocular beams. Aquaman and the Atlanteans subsequently slew everyone aboard. Black Manta was later present when Emperor Aquaman resolved to launch a ground invasion on New Themyscira.
During the invasion, Black Manta battled and killed a pair of Amazon warriors. He then fought Batman and Grifter, who were part of an American resistance trying to stop the war by attacking both sides. Although he initially had the pair on the ropes using his ocular beams, Batman was able to create a crack in Manta's helmet using a grenade. Batman and Grifter then fired into Manta's open helmet, killing him. Shortly thereafter the Flash was able to fix the timeline, returning everything back to normal.
Alliance with the Ocean Master[]
Black Manta collaborated in Prince Orm's conspiracy to unleash war between Atlantis and the surface world. Despite being a surface dweller himself, Manta had managed to convince the genocidal prince to allow him access to Atlantis.
During the invasion, Manta confessed to Aquaman that his goal was to manipulate the mentally unstable Orm into launching a catastrophic war that would eventually weaken Orm enough for Manta to betray and kill him. Manta revealed that he would then pillage all of the treasures of Atlantis, with no-one left to stop him due to the presumption that the Justice League would fail and the Atlantean army would be exhausted from battle.
Before he could explain which artefacts he wanted first, Aquaman summoned a great white shark that dragged Manta back into the sea with it. Presumably, at some point, Manta was recovered and imprisoned for his crimes.
Under Waller's Thrall[]
Black Manta was forced to ferry the Suicide Squad underwater, until they reached the prime insertion point. Amanda Waller didn't use him for the subsequent mission, since it needed a road trip on land. However, it is likely she kept him on retainer.
The Final War[]
Sometime in Darkseid's incursion on Earth for two years, Black Manta joined the Suicide Squad under Harley Quinn. He aided in the siege on Lextower, and acts as one of the guards of the top floor's gate activation to boom to Apokolips.
During the last assault of swarms of Paradooms - creatures made by combining Doomsday's genetic structure with the Parademons - Manta managed to destroy many, but ultimately he was ripped in half and killed by the creatures.
Since Flash triggered another Flashpoint event, it is possible that Manta was revived in the new universe.
Equipment[]
Black Manta Suit: Black Manta's suit of armor was a technologically advanced marvel that allowed him to fight on par with superheroes and those with incredible abilities. It also doubled as a diving apparatus, allowing him to survive while submerged in water for extended periods of time.
Ocular Beams: Black Manta's suit was equipped with one primary and potent weapon: ocular beams. These beams took the form of red plasma that projected from the eye sockets in Manta's helmet. Incredibly deadly, Manta's beams could utterly eviscerate cars and kill enhanced individuals such as Deathstroke and the Amazons.
Kryptonite Ocular Beams: For the Apokolips War, Luthor upgraded his suit with weaponry that can kill the Kryptonian based Paradooms.
Superhuman Durability: Manta's suit was made of an exceptionally durable material that allowed him to sustain major blunt force attacks without injury. Low caliber bullets were utterly incapable of piercing or even damaging Manta's suit. However there were limits to his defences, as powerful enough weapons were able to pierce his suit. Additionally, strong creatures such as Paradooms could also negate the suit's defences.
Superhuman Strength: Black Manta's armor provided him with enhanced strength to the point that he could contend with superhuman warriors such as Atlanteans and Amazons. He was able to manhandle an Amazon warrior and crush her head in his hand, and could even stun Aquaman with his punches.
