Honest John Worthington Foulfellow, simply known as Honest John, is the secondary antagonist of the 2022 Disney+ live-action film Pinocchio, a remake of the 1940 traditionally animated classic film of the same name.
He’s a cunning con artist fox who, with the assistance of his cat accomplice Gideon, often makes money-making schemes in an Italian village. When he finds out about a living puppet named Pinocchio, Honest John decides to sell him by tricking him into working for the puppeteer Stromboli. He is also based off his original incarnation of the same name.
In contrast to his traditionally animated counterpart, this version of Honest John is more realistic in appearance. He is an anthropomorphic fox with orange and white fur, yellow eyes, black nose and was wearing a red jacket as well as a blue and gold bed curtain fashioned like a cape with a gold chain to hold it in place, brown plaid dress pants, a black top hat, white gloves with ruffled cuffs and carrying a cane.
Biography[]
Pinocchio[]
While walking through the village they live in, Honest John and Gideon see a poster announcing Stromboli's return to the village and remind themselves of the occasion in which they tried to fool him. Shortly afterwards, they see the children of the village going to school, but notice among them a wooden boy called Pinocchio. As the duo realize what a fortune a wooden boy could be if they sold the living puppet to Stromboli, they trip Pinocchio and introduce themselves, insisting that Pinocchio should be an actor instead of going to school. Though doubtful, Pinocchio reluctantly agrees when the duo convinces him from giving it a try by assuring him it would make his father Geppetto proud.
Gideon goes dancing while Pinocchio and Honest John sing "Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee", but Jiminy Cricket, Pinocchio's consciousness, reaches them with the help of Sofia the Seagull and tries to convince Pinocchio that he should go to school as his father asked him to do instead of going to the theater after landing on John's top hat, but Gideon soon notices Jiminy and tries to kill him with his mallet, only to knock John out. Jiminy jumps on Gideon's hat and he tries to smash him, but fails and knocks himself out in the process, allowing Jiminy to dissuade Pinocchio and convince him to go to school.
After Pinocchio goes, but is kicked out by the headmaster due to "puppets not belonging to school but to theaters", Honest John and Gideon see what happened and go to support Pinocchio, with the duo using a glass to trap Jiminy inside to prevent him from messing their plans, which allows John to talk Pinocchio into accepting their offer to join Stromboli's puppet show, with Pinocchio accepting due to the headmaster's rejection, rejoining Honest John and Gideon as they leave a trapped Jiminy behind.
Honest John and Gideon aren't seen again after this, but it's likely that they got away with the money they made by selling Pinocchio to Stromboli (in the animated film, he pays them a miserable amount of money, while in this version is not seen how much he paid them), though Stromboli would later be arrested for cruelly treating his employees. However, given how Pinocchio later tells Geppetto about the adventures he had after not being allowed into school, it's possible that Pinocchio may tell Geppetto of how he got tricked by Honest John and Gideon, which may result in father and son reporting them to the authorities, given their known reputation as crooks and conmen by the villagers.
Trivia[]
Unlike his original animated counterpart, Honest John is a lot more shorter than in the original film, where he was as tall as Geppetto and other human characters, whereas here he is at most of the same height as Gideon. This was likely done to depict John in a more realistic way because a fox standing up is as tall as a cat standing up in real life.
Also unlike the original, this version never had any connection with the Coachman nor have they interacted.
A point of contention of the live-action remake is how Honest John convinces Pinocchio to join Stromboli's show: whereas in the animated version, John persuaded Pinocchio with his charisma to not obey Jiminy Cricket and instead seek fame, the remake has Pinocchio actually making it to school after being convinced by Jiminy to obey his father but being kicked out of it unfairly by the jerkish headmaster, allowing John to trick him more easily with the pretext that he's a "misunderstood artist". Puristic fans have disliked this change due to portraying Pinocchio as a well-intentioned kid who only commits mistakes under pressure and gets to be the innocent victim all the time throughout the film instead of a good-natured kid who misbehaves and learns from his mistakes, which they feel is the moral of every Pinocchio adaptation.
Honest John is Keegan-Michael Key's second role in a Disney live-action remake, having previously voiced Kamari in the 2019 The Lion King remake.
