"Have you come here to challenge me? I'm afraid you have made a fatal error in judgement, survivor!"
~ Rockwell's greeting to The Survivor, starting a battle!

Sir Edmund Rockwell is a main antagonist of ARK franchise. He is a nineteenth century biologist and natural observer who was originated from Victorian-era where he was a gentlemanly scholar who initially used his intelligence and diplomatic skills to aid other survivors and mediate conflicts on The Island. His fascination with the mysterious substance Element, which he named "Edmundium," eventually led to his downfall and transformation. Rockwell's obsession with Element grew during his time on the Scorched Earth ARK, where he began experimenting with the substance, leading to increasingly erratic and paranoid behavior. His resentment towards Helena Walker, a fellow survivor and scientist, also intensified during this period.

His quest for power culminated in his self-experimentation with liquid Element on the Aberration ARK, resulting in his mutation into a monstrous being covered in tendrils and spikes. As a mutated entity, Rockwell's influence expanded. He took control of the Genesis Simulation, using it as a means to further his plans of spreading Element corruption across the universe. In Genesis: Part 2, he seized control of a colony ship, creating horrifying creatures and demanding submission from its crew, with the ultimate goal of corrupting and dominate new worlds on the cosmos.

He is voiced by David Tennant, who also portrayed Kilgrave in Jessica Jones.

Appearance[]

Rockwell, an elderly man, is known for always sporting his reliable glasses. Throughout various portrayals, he is consistently shown with a romantic hairstyle and a regular style for his beard and mustache. Despite typically donning cloth and desert attire, there was an occasion when Rockwell ventured into the molten Element region wearing a hazmat suit. This decision ultimately led to his transformation into a tentacle monster, making him the second-largest being in the ARKs, surpassed only by the King Titan. The release of Genesis: Part 2 offered a glimpse of Rockwell in his monstrous form, with a mass of tentacles, and the official wallpaper for the DLC revealed that his face had partly regenerated, accompanied by additional appendages resembling fists. Interestingly, the trailer also unveiled that Rockwell possessed blue eyes during his human days. In the ARK animated series, Rockwell takes on the appearance of a middle-aged man, adopting the traditional British look from the 19th century, complete with his signature glasses. He is seen wearing a blue coat, a matching scarf, a cyan shirt, green pants, and black boots. As a unique accessory, Rockwell wields a cane crafted from the thigh bone of a dinosaur.

This individual was once an explorer, but has now transformed into a monstrous creature in humanoid form. He possesses an immense size, being ranked as the second largest in the game. Instead of traditional limbs and hair, his body is adorned with numerous tendrils, some of which are larger and adorned with menacing spikes, possibly made of bone. His face is equally horrifying, with one side still bearing some semblance of a human face, while the other side is covered in veins filled with elements, giving it a grotesque appearance. Additionally, his mouth is filled with overgrown, fang-like teeth. The torso serves as a protective enclosure for his sole remaining organ, his heart, which functions as a pump for the element-filled veins that traverse his entire body.

The towering corrupted AI emanates a radiant purplish glow, its imposing figure adorned in a resplendent suit of purple armor that fractures and breaks with each subsequent stage. Upon vanquishing this formidable entity, its countenance is unveiled, bearing an uncanny resemblance to the renowned figure, Edmund Rockwell.

Compared to his previous form as Rockwell, Rockwell Prime is notably smaller but more robust in build. Below is a detailed account of his various features: The chest cavity that was once open in his previous form has now sealed shut, while his lower abdomen remains exposed, devoid of any intestines. His once grotesquely disfigured face has transformed to resemble a more human appearance, disregarding the presence of extra eyes, gashes, and a triple head growth. Additionally, he has even developed a peculiar neckbeard. One of his irises emits a radiant purple glow, while the other remains non-illuminated and appears blue. The previously tubular tentacles have been exchanged for fleshy, undulating tendrils that have fused together to form limbs. Astonishingly, he possesses a secondary, detached spine that protrudes from his body, featuring a pair of human arms at its apex. On top of all this, his surroundings are adorned with an array of eyes and faces scattered throughout the arena. A considerable number of large tumors are visibly present along the left side of his body. Curiously, he appears to be "seated" upon a fleshy throne, which upon closer inspection, is revealed to be a natural extension of his own body. To further enhance his imposing presence, he is connected to the arena walls through overgrown "limbs" that extend from both sides of his body.

Personality[]

Rockwell, a man hailing from 19th century Britain, was widely regarded as a compassionate individual amidst the survivors of his time. However, a closer examination of his character reveals a contrasting aspect to his personality - a self-centeredness and an inflated sense of superiority in terms of intellect when compared to his fellow survivors. While his physical prowess may have diminished with age, Rockwell compensated for this by sharpening his intellectual capabilities, ultimately establishing himself as one of the most astute manipulators in the intricate web of ARK lore.

Prior to embarking on his descent into corruption, Rockwell had been duly recognized by Helena as a genuinely compassionate individual, always ready to provide whatever assistance survivors required without any trace of hesitation. His admirable qualities as a gentleman, scientist, and scholar not only earned him the utmost respect from Helena, but also positioned him as a guiding figure and mentor in her life.

When Rockwell found himself on Scorched Earth, he experienced a constant state of paranoia and was easily offended by even the slightest remarks. In fact, his obsession with superiority led him to commit a morally questionable act, poisoning the Burning Phoenix during their celebratory feast. As his journey continued on Aberration, Rockwell's fixation on Element (Edmundium) grew stronger, inching closer to witnessing its liquid form. This obsession caused him to become increasingly irritable and impatient, especially when he was denied what he desired. The injection of a partial dose of Element pushed him further into madness. Meanwhile, Helena, who was part of the obelisk checking team, witnessed Rockwell's descent into insanity. From her perspective, she observed his growing obsession and how it consumed him on the Aberrant ARK. She even remarked that Element (Edmundium) was mentioned obsessively in every sentence he spoke or wrote.

Throughout Genesis: Part 1, Rockwell takes great pleasure in taunting the survivors, reveling in their ignorance of the true nature of their situation. He delights in their lack of understanding about the Earth's current state, the existence of the ARKs, the Genesis Simulation, Element, and the Homo Deus, and how these elements all intertwine. Contrary to the image of a gentle and kind man painted by Helena Walker, Rockwell is revealed by HLN-A to be anything but. He corrupts survivors with the dangerous substance known as Element, ruthlessly manipulating and altering their minds. His actions display a careless and arrogant attitude, as he leaves behind a trail of chaos and secret passages within the Genesis Simulation. However, Rockwell appears to be confident that neither the player nor anyone else within the simulation poses a real threat to his plans. Time and again, he gleefully mocks the player, belittling their insignificance in comparison to his own power and knowledge of the true nature of their world. Furthermore, Rockwell has exhibited sadistic tendencies, deriving pleasure from witnessing survivors meet their demise in the treacherous Ocean biome of Genesis: Part 1.

During the Arrival Protocol in the Genesis Simulation, when the survivor confronts him, he proceeds to mock and insult them, utilizing his avatar known as the Corrupted Master Controller, thereby intensifying the emotional distress experienced by the survivor.

In the second part of Genesis, the antagonist persists in taunting the survivor, emphasizing their perceived inadequacy in comparison to his divine status. However, the sadistic tendencies displayed in the first part take a darker turn as he divulges intricate accounts of the gruesome murders he committed against the ship's crew. Additionally, he nonchalantly discloses the extent of his inhumane experimentation on the creatures within Rockwell's garden ring, showcasing a disturbing level of cruelty.

Biography[]

Past[]

"You find yourself in the presence of Sir Edmund Rockwell, Savant, Scientist, Survivor!"
~ Rockwell explaining what he was before Aberration!

Edmund Rockwell was born and raised in 19th century England and grew up in his older age to become a brilliant biologist. He was known for trophy hunting exotic animals in Africa and India (regions that were imperialized during this time) but also developed a passion for plants. He later dies due to unknown circumstances.

The Island[]

"This place, contains more wonders than you can dream of, secrets that only I can unlock, secrets meant for ME alone!"
~ Rockwell in the "ARK: The Animated Series" Extended Trailer

Rockwell finds himself mysteriously resurrected by an unknown force and placed on the mysterious Island, an anomalous island filled with exotic prehistoric, modern, and fantasy animals. Rockwell lives on the Island for an unknown amount of time utilizing his skills to survive and takes a liking to the flora, using them to craft various potions. This however would lead him down a path of darkness. He meets paleontologist Helena Walker and collaborates with her in scientific studies, with him studying the plants while Helena takes an interest in the animals, but both are fascinated by the mysterious obelisks floating above the landscape. Rockwell becomes fascinated by them and determines that the obelisks are made from a transformative element which he would name edmundium, after himself. While Helena meets Chinese warrior Li Mei Yin, who manages to tame multiple animals to keep herself alive, Rockwell sells his potions, recipes, and consumables to various tribes, using them to form military alliances as they happily give him resources in exchange for his many potions that bless superhuman abilities and memory erasing. Rockwell comments that if he presented these in England to his colleagues he would be laughed at. He also enlists tribes to help him collect edmundium artifacts which he realizes are tied to the obelisks somehow, and gets severely offended by Helena attempting to study these without him. He also looks down upon the tribes that rejected his potions due to the side effects.

Rockwell is later beseached by the Painted Sharks to appease Roman warlord Gaius Marcellus Nerva, who is attempting to conquer the entire Island to bring it under one monarchy. When he meets Nerva they quickly become friends, Nerva sees Rockwell as a battle strategist and advisor to which Rockwell also takes offense from, but he states that he's simply using Nerva as a tool to help him understand Edmundium and punish the tribes that wronged him. He secretly turns on Helena without her knowledge and instructs Nerva to kill Mei Yin's tames, as well as arrest Helena after they battle the Megapithecus. Rockwell realizes that the artifacts are key to leaving the Island as they find that battling the boss creatures gave them access to the Overseer A.I, which challenges humans to battle. Rockwell sends Nerva to battle the Overseer at the cost of many men, and he as well as Helena find a terminal platform capable of teleporting them to another map. They also find that the maps are all curated space stations and that they need to find a way off them. Rockwell and Helena individually travel to the desert map Scorched Earth, while Mei Yin stabs Nerva and she as well as the body teleport to Aberration.

Scorched Earth[]

"Peekabo, I see you... Hmm, I probably should've saved that when you reached the place with all the eyes, {sigh} I only had the two back when I explored this place as Sir Edmund Rockwell, I would've been happy to wander these ARKs forever uncovering their secrets, but we all have to leave the cradle eventually"
~ Rockwell speaking to The Survivor through HLN-A on Scorched Earth (Can only be heard with the HLN-A Mini Skin equipped on Scorched Earth

Rockwell finds himself surviving on his own in the hot desert. Once he's able to fend for himself he chooses to continue his agenda in studying the edmundium. In the meantime Helena has managed to find tribes to join and has also met Raia, a vigilante who rides Wyverns to protect the tribes from predators. Helena learns that Raia was the queen of Nosti, a now destroyed city which the Overseer wiped since they refused to fight the bosses and settled as a sustaining civilization in the desert. Rockwell eventually meets a tribe that worships the artifacts and obelisks, as the people of Nosti did, and becomes offended that they would do such a thing instead of studying them, remarking that they're a zealous artifact worshipping cult. Rockwell steals their artifacts in the dead of night and runs, and eventually meets with the Burning Phoenix, befriending the tribe chief after delivering his wife's child. Rockwell uses them to further collect the artifacts and battle the Manticore, the boss of the desert. He eventually betrays the Phoenix by poisoning their meals, killing the chief, his wife, and his council and generals. Rockwell later meets with Helena unwillingly and they both teleport to another map.

Aberration[]

"Look at me! I have been tempered in volatile Edmundium"
~ Rockwell in the Aberration Boss Fight

Rockwell and Helena find themselves in the caverns of Aberration, which fascinates Rockwell due to the amount of edmundium deposits in it. They reunite with Mei Yin and her new friend Diana, a 23rd century soldier who resides in an edmundium village. Helena assists Diana in building a portal to Earth while Rockwell joins the science division to further experiment with edmundium. The scientists however mock him for being from another time, making him bitter, but he manages to impress them by making a charge lantern. Mei Yin comes to distrust Rockwell due to his obsession and warns Diana that he's not to be trusted. Rockwell proves this right when he eventually injects himself with a potion made of pure edmundium, turning him into an enormous tentacled monster and destroys the village, killing Diana. Rockwell becomes the Overseer of the map, being capable of manipulating it. He resides in it for centuries, challenging human survivors until the player kills him.

Extinction[]

Although Rockwell is unseen, he manages to find a way onto the Genesis Colony Ship after the Reseed Protocol takes affect, forcing the Aberrant ARK he resided in to fall to earth, landing close to a station called "Arat Prime", after Helena Walker used it to send herself to the Genesis Colony Ship to aid another survivor, she left the link open for Rockwell to travel to the ship itself, with his mind, he waited for HLN-A to be discovered to take over the Genesis Simulation and the Colony Ship's Frontal Ring!

Genesis 1 and 2.[]

"Look who has found her way into my domain, HO-HO! And you brought your star pupil with you! This is the one you went with? after all those tests and games of pretend, your survivor? well, {inhale while gritting teeth), I'm afraid neither of you are going to survive this!
~ Rockwell scolding HLN-A for being a "clear copy" of Helena Walker and the Survivor she chose to try and fight back

After he leaves Earth, he waits till Helena's "puppet" is discovered, HLN-A, until he can corrupt the ship and simulation, when she is discovered, he starts with the simulation, deleting most of the biomes Master AI's, the Genesis Sim's guardians, however, Moeder, survived by deactivating herself and acted as the Genesis Simulation's only guardian

Driven mad by his power, Rockwell sends a new avatar of himself into to the Genesis simulation. He learns of the Genesis project, to colonize other worlds using terraforming ships, and plots to take over the universe using them, molding their life to his liking. The player defeats him in his A.I form till Rockwell assumes a second monster form connected to the ship. When the player kills him, Rockwell feels himself fading away, and HLN-A, an A.I with Helena's memories comforts him as he dies and the ship explodes, but the Eden Rings which house fauna survive and make their way to the planet Arat.

"ARGH! I can't be defeated by the likes of you! No, NO! I am this vessel, and IT IS ME!"
~ Rockwell after being wounded by The Survivor and HLN-A on the Genesis Colony Ship

Rockwell's end was not happy, as he died realizing his mistakes, and his horrible abuse of power, and HLN-A was destroyed knowing she truly was... well, HLN-A, not Helena Walker. At least they both died happy, in a way both were fine with.

Powers and Abilities[]

As stated, Rockwell is essentially a god in his non-human form comparable to the likes of the Homo Deus and Overseers, since he's capable of controlling the ARK's features he can create new animal species and spawn them at will, as well as inflict corrupt edmundium on his targets. In his monster form, he is a stationary entity who oversees Abberation. He has a deformed tentacled body which he can deal damage with, and rests in a pool of toxic liquid edmundium. He can also blast electric orbs capable of dismounting and stunning humans for inevitable death. He shares the abilities of controlling life and evolution as the A.I in Genesis albeit to a lesser extent.

His powers range with these

  • Element Bending, he has complete control of Element, using it to control the Aberrant ARK and Genesis Ship's Frontal Ring!
  • Advanced Intelligence, after Rockwell became the "Overseer" of the Aberrant ARK, he gained knowledge of all of history, and known the destruction of Earth
  • Advanced Hacking, despite being from the 19th Century, Rockwell learned about the future quickly, using his knowledge to hack the Genesis Simulation, deleting the AI guardians of all the biomes except the Ocean

Quotes[]
