~ Denethor II |
Denethor II is a supporting antagonist in Peter Jackson's Middle-earth film series, based on J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings. While the books portray Denethor as inherently noble and tragic if flawed and misguided, with his actions mainly driven by good intentions, the Peter Jackson films instead depict him as a much less sympathetic and far more unstable, cruel and cowardly character.
He was portrayed by John Noble, who also played the Scarecrow in Batman: Arkham Knight, Unicron in Transformers: Prime, Brainiac in Superman: Unbound, Mallus in DC's Legends of Tomorrow, Henry Parish in Sleepy Hollow, Walternate in Fringe, Leland Monroe in L.A. Noire, Sam Butcher in The Boys, the Diviner in Star Trek: Prodigy and Ivan Yugorsky in Running Scared.
Overview[]
After Boromir's death, Denethor finally succumbed to madness. When Gondor was besieged by the armies of Mordor, Denethor refused to ask Rohan for help because he knew that Aragorn, the rightful heir to Gondor's throne, would ride with them. Instead, he sent Faramir with a small army to Osgiliath to recapture the overrun city. All the men died except for Faramir, who returned to Minas Tirith heavily injured.
When the armies of Mordor besieged Minas Tirith, Denethor believed the war was lost. In his madness, he decided to burn both himself and Faramir, whom he believed to be dead. Faramir was saved by Peregrin Took and Gandalf. Denethor, burning alive, ran outside and jumped off the pinnacle of Minas Tirith to his death. His son Faramir succeeded him as the ruling Steward, but due to his injuries, he was unable to rule Gondor.
