Biodiversity funding

The funding rounds are publicly advertised at the start of March and September

The DCC’s Biodiversity Fund has been supporting landowner and community groups to protect and enhance native biodiversity in the city since 2007.

The purpose of the fund is to support landowners and communities to protect, manage and enhance the condition and extent of indigenous biodiversity across Dunedin city.

The Dunedin Biodiversity Fund has two rounds per year which are publicly advertised at the start of March and September:

  • Fund open for applications 1 – final working day of March (decisions made mid-May)
  • Fund open for applications 1 – final working day of September (decisions made mid-November)

The DCC will provide up to half the cost of a project, to a maximum of $5,000. Applicants can claim an approved grant after they have paid all costs associated with the project. The DCC Grants Subcommittee allocates grants from the Biodiversity Fund. The fund is contestable, and each application will be assessed on its merits on a case-by-case basis.

Funding is allocated to support projects that:

  • Maintain or improve the state of indigenous biodiversity e.g. plant and animal pest control, fencing, and /or
  • Increase the extent of indigenous biodiversity e.g. revegetation.

Any landowner or community group keen to make a difference to biodiversity in our city is encouraged to apply. Applicants should read the Dunedin Biodiversity Fund Guide for Applicants for more information on the fund and the criteria.
