A Service to The Community is the fifth episode of season 1 of the TV series.
Plot[]

While helping out in Community Service Day, Will and Hay Lin found a strange piece of Meridian graffiti which the Mage identified as belonging to a beast, living in Heatherfield in human form. Will suspected her new History teacher, Professor Collins, and the girls immediately formulated a plot to force the suspected monster into revealing his true form.
The plan went well until they found out Collins is not the beast. They flew him back home, accidentally dropping him onto trampolines and into swimming pools on more than one occasion. In the B-story, Will's mother and Professor Collins started dating.
Possible mistakes[]
- The girls were wearing different clothes before and after the flashback to last year's Community Service Day.
- When Martin's job was announced, his hair was brown, not orange.
- Taranee and Will were pushing Dean Collins in a wheelbarrow, but when Will talked to Hay Lin, she was walking alongside Taranee while Irma had taken her place.
- When the Guardians were attacked by geese in the air, Will raised her hands to her face in a closeup, but when it cuts back to a wide shot, she is still holding onto Mr Collins and he slipped through her fingers instead of her having already let go.
- When Taranee looked at the lizard in the terrarium at Dean Collins' house, it was the size of a salamander, but when the lizard was out of the tank and on the chair Dean sits in, it was the size of an iguana.
Behind the scenes[]
- Fan discussion of the original broadcasts of this episode at Anime Superhero (formerly Toon Zone). Some episode threads also feature posts by members of the crew that worked on the show, including Andrew Nicholls (Andrewjn) and Justine Cheynet (witchinsider).
- During production, the writers were informed that the bullies were not permitted to peel gum off a seat and eat it, as they had proposed. However, Uriah does exactly that in this episode. Similar examples occurred with the scripts for The Battle of The Meridian Plains and The Final Battle.[1]
- Also during production, an executive objected to the "imitable behavior" of going near train tracks.[1][2] However, in this episode the Guardians and Caleb actually walk along train tracks inside a tunnel to find a portal. Another scene with the girls around train tracks takes place in The Stone of Threbe.

Trivia[]
- This episode marks the first appearances of the characters Professor Dean Collins, Elizabeth Hale, and the Mage, as well as the locations Cedric's bookstore and the Infinite City.
- This also marks the de facto first appearance of Nerissa as the Mage is really her in disguise.
- This is the second time that, when the girls transformed, they did not say the name of their elements. The transformation sequence was also shortened in this episode.
- It is revealed that, in the previous year, Irma had to work in a sewer (which has water in it) and Cornelia had to work at the monkey cages (which have trees and plants, which relate to earth).
- The famous magician David Copperfield was mentioned by Irma in this episode.
- This is the only episode of the show where the Guardians do not fight against a force of evil only Professor Collins who they mistakenly thought was evil. Every other episode has featured the Guardians fighting against a Main Villans or one of their minions/creations.
