Z is for Zenith is the twenty-sixth episode of season 2 and the fifty-second episode overall of the TV series, and the season and series finale.
Plot[]
The episode begins with the Guardians within a dark space, unable to remember who each other are or even their names. The only thing they can do is what Irma tells them, go with the flow.
You then cut to the moment after Lord Cedric swallowed Phobos, and was now with his power as well as Phobos and his scepter, Elyon and C.H.Y.K.N, the Heart of Meridian and Zamballa, have reached his zenith. Since Miranda's imprisonment, Miranda and Lord Cedric became lovers, and after the months of being humiliated by both Phobos and the Rebels, they swore their vengeance on them all. Lord Cedric decides to attack Heatherfield, while Miranda was tasked to destroy the Aurameres, leaving W.I.T.C.H. powerless.
Lord Cedric calls out of who will be loyal to him, Frost and the Tracker bows to him, while Raythor, Gargoyle, and Sandpit showed Lord Cedric their loyalty by turning against him. W.I.T.C.H. and Matt returned to Earth, while Lord Cedric gave Miranda some of his powers that transformed her into a gigantic spider, ordering her to destroy the Aurameres, the rebels, and those traitors. Caleb, Blunk, Raythor, Gargoyle, Sandpit, Luba, and the Rebels fought against Miranda, Frost, the Tracker, and their army, until Miranda gave the leadership to Frost as she scuttled off towards the Aurameres. Luba, Caleb, and Blunk made chase.
Meanwhile, Cedric arrived in Heatherfield and Matt, Mr. Huggles and Napoleon turned Heatherfield into a glamour zone with a large TV screen to prevent anyone from seeing Cedric and W.I.T.C.H. battling. This then caught the attention of a man in a limo called "Mr. Riddle.", who seemed to have seen through the glamour of the battle in and thus has seen the Guardians using their powers.
Miranda meanwhile had reached the Aurameres and whacked aside Luba when trying to defend them, as Caleb and Blunk arrived to face her. Miranda gushed over Blunk for Passling is her favourite prey, but then recalls that her darling Cedric would scold her for eating on the job.
Back on earth, many people were distracted by the TV screen, including Vance Michael Justin who caught Irma's attention, before Lord Cedric's battling almost cost the lives of Irma's dad and Will's mom. Inside Lord Cedric's stomach, Phobos couldn't hold out to the pressure, whereas inside his scepter, Elyon, C.H.Y.K.N. and Yan Lin's Altermere thought of how they could help the Guardians defeat Lord Cedric. Nerissa suggested that she knew of a way but would be very dangerous.
In Kandrakar, Miranda began to destroy the Auromeres, but was stopped when Blunk climbed up and rode on her back, joined by Caleb.
With Halinor's help, Nerissa tells W.I.T.C.H. to recall their dream when the five took the form of their elements, mentioning that they can actually do it in real life by "touching" the Four Dragons and the nymph Xin Jing. W.I.T.C.H. touched the dragons and transformed into their elements.
Back in Kandrekar, the rebels were fighting against the Tracker, when Drake noticed a weakness by jumping into his the Tracker's chest, causing him to stagger before Drake jumps back out, destroying the Tracker, reducing him to nothing but his cloak and hat, covered with static starks. Miranda meanwhile managed to knock Blunk and Caleb off her back, and was about to devour them when she was heavily punched by Sandpit who'd came to Blunk and Caleb's aid. With three swings, Sandpit was able to strike Miranda down, losing all of her powers and reducing her to her unconscious human form.
Cedric breathed fire on the Guardians, but Fire Teranee absorbed all of his fire, Earth Cornelia entangled him with her grass hair, while Water Irma sucked Phobos, Elyon, C.H.Y.K.N. and Yan Lin's Altermeres out of Cedric's body with a kiss. Cedric frantically tried to get away, but was caught in Air Hey Lin's tornado, choking him before Quintessence Will finished him off by electrocuting him.
Cedric was reduced to his normal side, lying alongside the weakened Phobos, and his cracked scepter. Yan Lin tells everyone within their jewelled prison to join hands, for if they maintaining harmony, they may escape. As they were escaping however, Nerissa let go of them and frees herself. She then picked up the Heart of Meridian and placed it within the scepter before turning to the element Guardians, very pleased that her plan had worked, and that in those forms they no longer have the power to resist her, they became her new thralls for the conquest to conquer. First she immediately took over Kandrakar, capturing Julian and Caleb in the process of joining her. Next was Meridian, then Zamballa, then Aridia, all surrounding their hearts to her, with Lilian and Earth being last, all acknowledging her as their queen, ruling the universe with her husband Julian and her son Caleb, who were very proud of her accomplishment.
You then cut to the moment where Nerissa picked up the Heart of Meridian. Only this time, it was picked up and worn by Elyon. Yan Lin and the old Guardians tells her that because Nerissa chose power over harmony, the jewel ended up becoming her prison, leaving her with nothing but her dreams of conquest, whereas they achieve their freedom. Elyon hoped that Nerissa and her fantasies would get along with each other. But then she thought about her friends as they tried to talk to them, Elyon with Earth Cornelia, Cassidy with Water Irma, both Yan Lins with Air Hey Lin and Matt with Quintessence Will. Halinor, who was with Fire Teranee, mentions that the Guardians have by now gone beyond humanity and in the process have lost themselves completely.
All the events of the episode retold in past tense, you cut back to W.I.T.C.H. within the dark space, unable to remember of who they are. Suddenly, Will caught Matt's, Elyon's, Cassidy's, Halinor's, Kadma's and both Yan Lins' voices and told her friends to follow the voices, follow her. Leaving the black space, they regained their humanity, with Matt hoping that they won't do that again anytime soon.
The episode ends by Will monologuing how the event that occurred on earth was blamed on the snowstorm, and that everything went back to normal without a hitch. Elyon reabsorbed the Heart of Meridian's power, and Julian took the Heart of Meridian (with Nerissa still asleep inside) to where he lives at Megenzian Falls, having the family together again. Phobos, Cedric, Miranda, Frost, and all the villains returned to their jail cells. Meridian was restored with Elyon returning to her throne and with Raythor as her guardian, with Raythor finally having a ruler he can trust. Halinor and Luba released the Oracle, Althor and Tibor from Nerissa's prison. Kadma gave the Heart of Zamballa to Ironwood, and relocated to a well humble life on Earth. Cassidy was reunited with her mother instead of returning to the afterlife. Yan Lin introduced to her family her Altermere as her "long-lost twin sister Mira". W.I.T.C.H. spent most of the winter break with their boyfriends (save for Irma, whom is still single).
Back at school after break, W.I.T.C.H. met the new computer teacher Prof. Raphael Sylla, (Mr. Riddle's shofar) who is looking forward of getting to know all five of them. Will then ends by saying "Yes, everything's back to normal."

Release notes[]
- During Will's ending monologue, an instrumental version of Don't Wanna Say Goodbye, one of the unreleased songs, was heard.
- The English-language DVD releases of this episode have a unique audio difference, with significant implications for releases of the TV series. At the very climax of the episode, when Will shot Cedric with lightning and he was finally defeated, the background music is completely different from all other known versions of the episode, including those aired on TV in English.
- All of the other audio tracks on the same disc (for other languages) have the standard climactic music in that scene, which means this is almost certainly a mastering error and not a deliberate change (for example due to licensing issues with music, as happens with some other TV shows).
- Such a change, whether accidental or deliberate, is only feasible if the audio track was mixed and mastered from the original audio layers for the DVD release. This has two important implications:
- Unlike for many other TV series, especially those from the SD era, the release was remastered from the original sources and not simply transferred from whichever master copy was readily available. This likely means that the DVD audio, at least for the English tracks, is the highest-quality transfer that could feasibly have been made. (A similar situation probably occurred with the DVD video, as the show was actually digitally composited at PAL resolution,[1] although this is slightly complicated by interlacing issues in the first two episodes and very occasionally later on.)
- At the time the DVD was made, many years after the show had ended, whoever produced the remaster (likely someone at Disney) still had access to said original sources. This means that future releases of the series should be expected to maintain a high technical quality standard.
Comics connections[]
- In the comics, Raphael Sylla is an intelligence agent (and colleague of Maria Medina and Joel McTiennan, who were seen in C is for Changes) sent to spy on the girls in the guise of a computer teacher and uncover the secrets of their suspected powers. Based on the character design and initial "Mr. R." is clearly Mr. Riddle, who has psychic abilities himself (which presumably allowed him to see through the glamour in this episode), and who worked with Sylla in the background but also had his own agenda.
- In the comics, the girls were simply suspected of having powers and Sylla's mission was to prove this, and it is unclear to what extent the intelligence agency knew of the girls' responsibilities as Guardians. In the TV series, it is strongly implied that Mr. Riddle actually saw them battling Cedric, and thus the presumed discovery is of the Guardians clearly fighting to protect Heatherfield from a giant snake monster. Based on these different circumstances, it is questionable how similar these characters' roles would have been to those in the comics had the show continued in terms of how antagonistic they would be towards the main characters, at least in an official capacity as representatives of the intelligence agency (as opposed to Mr. Riddle's personal objectives).
- The Guardians literally becoming one with their elements may be based on how the Guardians battle against the evil essence of Jonathan Ludmoore until he had drained them in Arc 5: The Book of Elements.
Possible mistakes[]
- Cassidy was in her death robes because her human form had her burial outfit. However, when the Guardians returned from their Zenith forms, Cassidy was in her Guardian outfit instead of her pale blue robes. She was also in her Guardian outfit instead of her robes when Queen Elyon asked what they should do about W.I.T.C.H.
Behind the scenes[]
- Fan discussion of the original broadcasts of this episode at Anime Superhero (formerly Toon Zone). Some episode threads also feature posts by members of the crew that worked on the show, including Andrew Nicholls (Andrewjn) and Justine Cheynet (witchinsider).
- Character model sheets for the glamoured appearances of the Guardians, which are only seen in this episode, can be found in this blog post by line models supervisor Bruno Martineau.
Trivia[]
- Every second-season episode has a clear focus on one of the five main characters. This episode is one of 9 in the season to focus on Will Vandom.
- This is the final episode of the TV series. However, the introduction of Riddle and Sylla left open the possibility of the show continuing with a third season, presumably a loose adaptation of Arc 3: A Crisis on Both Worlds.
- This episode marks the second time that the Guardians are shown in their Zenith forms. The first time, which is referenced in this episode, was in a dream in E is for Enemy. It is only Cornelia's first time in her zenith form as she never truly transformed her hair merely grew longer.
- Hay Lin said she can't remember the last time it snowed. There was snow on the ground in this season's premiere, as well as the season 1 finale.
- Drake possibly referenced events from F is for Facades when he successfully took down the Tracker, although it is more likely he is referring Will's more recent fights in X is for Xanadu and Y is for Yield.
- Kadma is the only member of C.H.Y.K.N. to not have a speaking role.
- Julian did not actually relinquish the Heart of Meridian, so it is unknown what would happen to such a powerful item, especially if Queen Elyon needed it to be a full strength. However, Yan Lin had stated that Elyon was able to absorb the great mystical energies from the Scepter of Phobos itself, meaning she might not have needed it anymore, and it was simply a non-magical jewel. In the monologue at the end of the episode, Will explicitly stated that Elyon had returned to full power.
- It is unknown how Cassidy remained alive once the hearts were restored. The other Guardians returned to their original forms before Nerissa 'united' them but Cassidy did not become a ghost. Head writer of season 2 Greg Weisman revealed that (as far as he was concerned) once brought back to life, the magic was done and couldn't be undone.[2] Possibly the formerly close relationship between Nerissa and Cassidy could have something to do with this.
