“ | The Dark Army's Mystic Legion Commander Zaboera's son, the Mystic Scholar Zamza! | „ |
~ Zamza's introduction. |
Zamza is a minor antagonist in Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. He is the son of Zaboera and a powerful sorcerer, who lures the hero in a trap for his experiments.
In the 2020 anime, he was voiced by Akio Suyama in Japanese and Ian Hanlin in English.
Personality[]
Zamza shared many personality traits with his father, as he is extremely cruel, sadistic, ambitious, cunning, manipulative haughty and arrogant. He shows his skills in manipulation by skilfully passing as a normal human and luring the best warriors around with a prize, to remove potential threats and use their might for his own gain. Finally, he delights in rubbing his success and perceived superiority in the face of people he used or enemies, believing himself able to overcome any foe. His greatest ambition is to prove his worth to his superiors and rise in ranks in the Dark Army.
Contrary to his father however, he can recognize his foes' merits to their rightful worth and praise them in earnest, and is fully willing to confront his enemies upfront. Still, this mostly stems from his belief in his own superiority, and he regards any foe as beneath him, no matter how powerful they are. In the end however, he comes across as rather pitiable, for the one whose acknowledgment he craves the most is that of his father, who is horribly verbally abusive towards him and openly admits that he sees him as nothing more than a tool. In fact, his yearning for his father's praise is no different than that of every other child. Even knowing deep down that his efforts to earn his praises are in vain, he keeps working for him and taunting the heroes' pity to his dying breath.
Powers and Abilities[]
Like his father, Zamza is a highly skilled sorcerer and scientist. He is able to cast a wide array of spells for various purposes, including transforming his aspect to look human, and to cast powerful mid-level attack spells. He studied and performed many successful experiments on life-forms, not only to create an inescapable bio-prison feeding on the life-energy of its captive and a soporific gas, but to replicate the divine being called the Dragon Knight to create an extremely powerful life-form displaying the features of hundreds of monsters.
Zamza is able to transform into such life-form, he calls the Superior Being (Hyper Demon in Japanese), becoming a gigantic and tremendously powerful monster. Under that form, he gains enormous strength, speed despite his size and bulk, agility and spryness. He fights mostly with his huge fists, claws and prehensile feet, but he can fly with his wings, use his pincer to cut foes to pieces or to seize them, spit glue-like mucus, and slowly devour people in his belly mouth.
Worse, he instantly regenerates any wound he suffers, no matter how dire, and can use Aura (energy stemming from life-force) to fire deadly energy blasts. His only weaknesses being that he cannot spell-cast under that form, and that his healing factor can be overcome, mostly with weaponized healing-magic disturbing his cell activity.
Biography[]
At some point, Zamza was sent to the kingdom of Rosmos and he manipulated the king to hold the Martial Arts Tournament so that he could fight them in his hyperdemon form to collect the battle data. After the tournament ended, Zaboera imprisoned the gladiators in his living prison.
Witnessing this, Dai confronted and battled Zamza. While Zamza was easily overwhelmed, he still grinned maliciously. Eventually, Dai broke his armor, revealing Zamza's hyperdemon body. He then transformed into a monstrous hyperdemon and fought Dai, even devouring him after defeating him.
Then, Maam was able to break the prison and injured Zamza by overhealing him causing the hyperdemon to vomit Dai out. Seeing this, Dai used the Sword of Champion to fatally wound Zamza. He then collapsed and reverted back to his humanoid form. After transmitting the battle data to Zaboera and telling the heroes that their Sword of Champion is fake as the real one was already given to Hadlar , who would later use them to become a perfect Superior Being. As he was disintegrating, Zamza taunted the heroes that they would one day get defeated by the perfected result of his experiments.
Trivia[]
Zamza's research to create a perfect life-form and transform into an immensely powerful demon is similar to the Secret of Evolution used by Estark, Psaro Banesword, Aamon and Grandmaster Nimzo in the Dragon Quest video-games from which the series is taken.
