Fenbren is a chess-themed villain in the Dragon Quest spin-off manga and anime Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. He is the Bishop Warrior of Hadlar's personal guard. Created by animating a chess piece to battle the Disciples of the Great Hero Avan, he confronts them until his demise against the Dragon Knight Baran, who earned his staunch ire after wounding him.
In the 2020 anime, he was voiced by Kōji Yusa in Japanese and Giles Panton in English.
Appearance[]
Sigma is a human-shaped, silvery, metallic construct, looking like a priest wearing ceremonial garb, with crescent-shaped shoulders and a pointed headpiece, fitting his Bishop-theme. Most of his body is a sharp, vaguely sword-shaped blade, and he has pointed, claw-like fingers.
Personality[]
Unlike the other Royals Guards, who are evil, yet genuinely polite, honorable and appreciative of worthy opponents, Fenbren is just as ruthless, if not more, and much more cruel, vicious and excitable, displaying strong sadism and bloodlust.
Nevertheless, he is very stoic, collected and coldly polite, even when most enraged, he never fights dirty and acknowledges his enemies' worth. It is just that he is extremely prideful and vindictive, to the point of not being able to stand when bested, not stopping until he gets his revenge no matter the cost, even in the face of much superior enemies.
Like the other Orichalcos Guards, he greatly enjoys a good fight and is furiously loyal to Hadlar. The sliver of honour he retains and the sense of companionship is a reflection of Hadlar's newfound mentality when he created him, though his own is much less appearant compared to the others, as Hadlar points out he bears some remnant of his old hateful and arrogant personality back when he was the Dark Lord.
Powers and Abilities[]
Fenbren is made of Orichalcos, a divine, nearly indestructible metal, making him immune to anything but the very best weapons, attacks and spells. Not only that, but even attacks able to shatter Orichalcos do not harm him unless they strike his Core at heart-level. Moreover, he can concentrate his power in his body to withstand even attacks able to harm him. He can cast basic spells to teleport and fly, and can appear under the shape of the chess piece he was born from, only human-sized.
Fenbren masters Wind spells, which he uses to swat enemies away, destabilizing them and leaving them open for an attack. He can even cast "Wosh Cross" two basic wind spells combined. With every part of his body being a blade, even touching Fenbren proves exceedingly dangerous, with him cutting metallic weapons at the barest touch.
He is an immensely skilled fighter who uses his arms like bladed weapons, slashing through rock and steel like nothing, and he can make each blade whirl like a drill, to deliver devastating piercing blows. His deadliest attack is "Twin Sword Spinning": in which he turns his entire body as a drill and charges at high speed.
Biography[]
Fenbren, just like the other Elite Royal Guard members, was created by Hadlar using a forbidden spell on five Orichalcos chest pieces, with him being born from a pawn.
He first appears when Hadlar sends the Elite Royal Guard attack the Kingdom of Sababa, when they easily wreck the entire capital city and destroy a ship full of weapons destined to battle the Dark Army. Soon, the Disciples of Avan gathering the main heroes arrived, and each Royal Guard fought one individually.
Fenbren fought the mage Popp and easily broke his magic staff, until the heroes changed their strategy, wounding the Pawn Warrior Hym and the knight Warrior Sigma. Popp used an opening to cast his deadliest spell "Medoroa", only for the Rook Warrior Block to collapse on them all and bury them underground, saving their lives at great cost to himself. Hadlar told them to retreat and healed them.
Hadlar soon sent Fenbren to guard the subterranean entrance of the Vearn Palace, only accessible underwater near the desolate Field of Death, ordering him to kill anyone who found it out. The Bishop Warrior would meet the fat rat monster Chiu Fat Rat, who had come to investigate the Field of Death and found the entrance by chance.
Fenbren easily defeated Chiu and his monster friends, but could not finish him off, for Baran threw his blade at him without being seen, blinding the Bishop Warrior and causing him to angrily retreat.
Eventually, Hadlar ordered his Royal Elite Guard to battle the heroes at the Field of Death. Fenbren, however, left them so that he could kill Baran as a revenge, refusing to get healed until the affront was washed in blood. Fenbren soon confronted Baran and Dai at the underwater entrance of Vearn's Palace. While Fenbren successfully knocked Baran's sword out of his hand with an underwater Wind spell, he was well aware that he stood no chance against two Dragon Knights but did not care and wanted to kill at least one.
Dai sliced Fenbren with his Orichalcos Sword as he was going to kill Baran, bisecting the Bishop Warrior and killing him. Fenbren's remains then sunk into deep water as he rant about his defeat and exploded.
