Sigma is a chess-themed villain in the Dragon Quest spin-off manga and anime Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. He is the Knight Warrior of Hadlar's personal guard. Created by animating a chess piece to battle the Disciples of the Great Hero Avan, he confronts them until his demise against the mage Popp.
In the 2020 anime, he was voiced by Chikahiro Kobayashi in Japanaese and Hiro Kanagawa (who also voiced Gihren Zabi) in English.
Appearance[]
Sigma is a human-shaped, silvery, metallic construct, wearing metallic armor with a horse's head. He wields a spear looking like a jousting lance fitting his Knight-theme, and can open his chest to reveal a magic shield called the Mirror of Shahal, which he can wear and use as a shield.
Personality[]
Having been created from a Knight, Sigma follows the chivalric code of knighthood. Despite being cruel, ruthless, and hellbent in eliminating targets, he fights fairly, displays a strong code of honor, and respects worthy opponents.
He is very confident in his abilities, entirely within reason, but he is always cautious, and never underestimate his enemies, no matter how below him they appear. Ironically, this makes him Popp's most dangerous foe to date, since no-one before him, ever took him seriously until too late.
Like the other Orichalcos Guards, he greatly enjoys a good fight and is furiously loyal to Hadlar. His honorable conduct and sense of companionship is a reflection of Hadlar's newfound mentality when he created him.
Powers and Abilities[]
Sigma is made of Orichalcos, a divine, nearly indestructible metal, making him immune to anything but the very best weapons, attacks and spells. Not only that, but even attacks able to shatter Orichalcos do not harm him unless they strike his Core at heart-level. Moreover, he can concentrate his power in his body to withstand even attacks able to harm him. He can cast basic spells to teleport and fly, and can appear under the shape of the chess piece he was born from, only human-sized.
He is an immensely strong and skilled fighter, who wields his spear with expert proficiency. He is the most agile and the fastest among the Royal Guard, (second fastest when the Queen Warrior Albinass goes all out). He masters explosive Boom spells, which he can fire from his mouth, and can detach his right hand to reveal a cannon, from which he fires his deadliest technique: Lightning Buster, a concentrated blasting shot as powerful as the highest level Kaboom spell, but which only works at close range, concentrating all the explosive power in a single point inside the target for much worse damage.
Finally, the Mirror of Shahal can reflect any spell and blast of Aura (energy stemming from life-force), no matter how powerful, sending them back at the caster. This makes him a deadly foe for wizards and the Royal Guards's main answer to spellcasters of all sorts.
Biography[]
Sigma, just like the other Elite Royal Guard members, was created by Hadlar using a forbidden spell on five Orichalcos chest pieces, with him being born from a knight.
He first appears when Hadlar sends the Elite Royal Guard attack the Kingdom of Sababa, when they easily wreck the entire capital city and destroy a ship full of weapons destined to battle the Dark Army. Soon, the Disciples of Avan gathering the main heroes arrived, and each Royal Guard fought one individually. Sigma fought the grappler lady Maam, who can match his speed. However, the heroes changed their strategy and the Beast King Crocodine ripped Sigma's arm off. The mage Popp then used an opening to cast his deadliest spell "Medoroa", only for the Rook Warrior Block to collapse on them all and bury them underground, saving their lives at great cost to himself. Hadlar told them to retreat and healed them.
The Elite Royal Guard soon battled the heroes again at the Field of Death. But this battle would be stopped with the explosion of the Black Core Vearn secretely implanted in Hadlar's body (a magic-powered bomb as powerful as a modern nuke). After the explosion, the Elite Guard freed themselves from the debris, they sensed that Hadlar was in danger as he was battling Vearn, having rebelled outraged by the Dark King's callous disregard. However, Sigma, Block, Albinass and the Pawn Warrior Hym were demobilized by Mystvearn and Killvearn. Eventually, Block sacrificed himself to save Hadlar with his special power.
Much later, as the Disciples of Avan stormed the Vearn Palace to settle their score once and for all with the Dark King, Hadlar, who wanted to fight Dai one-on-one, ordered his remaining Royal Guards to fight Dai's friends. Sigma would battle Popp, and while he had the upper-hand for the entire battle, he acknowledged the boy as a powerful enemy. Eventually Popp managed to remove Sigma's Mirror of Shahal with his extansible magic rod, and pin his hand against a wall, but he detached his hand and hit Popp with "Lightning Buster". However, Popp now masters Healing magic, having awakened as an Archmage.
Popp fires his "Medoroa" spell pretending to miss, while he targeted the discarded Mirror to bounce it back on Sigma. But the Knight Warrior saw it coming and grabs him, throwing him into his own spell. However, this was a diversion as Popp knew his enemy would not be easily fooled, and he faked "Medoroa" casting a weaker spell. Using the effect of surprise, he finally hits him with the real deal.
Before dying from having his torso obliterated, Sigma congratulated Popp for such a satisfying match. Devoid of any trace of ill-will, he granted him the Mirror of Shahal as a token of appreciation, advising him to wear it as a breastplate hidden under his clothes for it was too heavy. Popp would later use the Mirror in his strategy to land a decisive blow on Vearn during the Final Battle.
