~ The Undying Ones, speaking to Daenerys Targaryen. |
The Undying Ones are supporting antagonists in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series. They are the chief warlocks of Qarth, who reside in a chamber deep within the House of the Undying, the headquarters of the Qartheen warlocks.
Appearance[]
In disguise, the Undying Ones appear as beautiful wizards, witches, and warriors, with some of them wearing luxurious robes, elaborate armor, and tall-pointed hats (a common icon amongst wizards). Beautifully gown-clad women were also included.
In reality, the Undying Ones are actually withered, frail, and ancient in appearance, with their flesh, nails and white eyes having a shade of blue and violet-blue due to them drinking Shade of the Evening.
Biography[]
A Clash of Kings[]
After the Pureborn, the ruling council of Qarth, refused to help Daenerys Targaryen in conquering the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, the latter decided to follow the advice of Pyat Pree, a Qartheen warlock, who advised her to seek counsel with the Undying Ones in the House of the Undying. There, Daenerys goes through different chambers with multiple visions, including one regarding a 'song of ice and fire'.
After the visions, Daenerys meets Pyat Pree again, telling her to follow him, but her dragon Drogon disobeys his orders, as he senses that it is only an illusion. Daenerys and Drogon enter a great hall within a garden, where the Undying Ones conjure an illusion that allows them to appear as wizards and witches in their prime, wearing beautiful robes and armor. They, in sweet voices, warmly welcome Daenerys in a friendly manner. They present themselves as the Undying Ones of Qarth and claim to have sent the red comet for Daenerys. Though they try to tempt her by offering knowledge and magical weapons, Drogon, sensing the illusion, flies from his mother's shoulder and points her to a door made of ebony and wood, which amuses an Undying One, who offers to teach Daenerys the secret speech of dragonkind, though it is actually sorcery.
Daenerys abandons the Undying Ones' offering, and she and Drogon enter a dark, gloomy chamber where they find the true appearance of the Undying Ones. They are seen around a long stone table where a pulsating heart, blue with corruption, is floating above them. Though the Undying Ones appear to be motionless, Daenerys begins hearing their voices inside her head.
As she sees several more visions, Daenerys is suddenly cut off from them by Drogon, and she is horrified to find the Undying Ones touching, stroking, and pulling on her as they attempt to drain her of her life. Fortunately for Daenerys, Drogon saves her by destroying the floating heart and burning the Undying Ones with his dragonfire. After regaining her strength, Daenerys escapes from the chamber with Drogon as the Undying Ones burn to death while at the same time shrieking in tongues that have been long been forgotten by history.
As Drogon's dragonflame proved to be so hot and powerful, it not only killed the Undying Ones, but it also caused the entire room to be set on fire. Soon, the House of the Undying is destroyed in smoke and flames. Immediately afterwards, Pyat Pree starts hopping and muttering magical curses at Daenerys and attacks her with a knife as she escapes, but he is stopped by Jhogo and Rakharo, who then let him go. Afterwards, back at the palace of merchant prince Xaro Xhoan Daxos, Irri and Jhiqui celebrate the defeat of the warlocks and the death of their leaders, the Undying Ones, claiming that Daenerys sent them to hell for being "maegi" (the Dothraki word for sorcerers).
A Storm of Swords[]
In order to avenge the Undying Ones, Pyat Pree gathers a group of warlocks and takes a ship to Pentos, where Magister Illyrio Mopatis is awaiting Daenerys' return. Pyatt's quest for vengeance does not take place, however, as Daenerys changes course to Slaver's Bay, while Pyatt's crew ends up getting captured by the Silence, the dreaded pirate ship of Euron Greyjoy.
A Dance with Dragons[]
Arriving at Meereen to speak to Daenerys, Xaro Xhoan Daxos claims that all the Undying Ones are dead.

Trivia[]
- The Undying Ones are never seen or heard of in the TV series Games of Thrones.
- Nearly all the visions that were shown to Daenerys were also cut off, except for the one showing the ruined throne room where the Iron Throne is covered in ashes. In addition, Daenerys meets her deceased husband and son, who were never seen in the books.
- Also, their deaths were replaced with Pyat Pree being burned by Daenerys's three dragons, while in the novels it is implied that Pree got captured by Euron Greyjoy during the third installment.
