The Wyl of Wyl, also known as the Widow-lover, is a minor character in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series. He was the head of House Wyl during the First Dornish War and is infamous for his vile, cruel, and savage behavior, in which his atrocities were noted as being the most infamous acts during the war.
Personality[]
Not much is known about the Wyl of Wyl's personality, but what is known is that he was cruel and savage in nature and doesn't care if he has committed atrocities, no matter how vile they are; a notorious example is when he amputated the sword hands of Orys Baratheon and his men, causing the former to become bitter and vengeful from then on, which is what led House Baratheon to harbor a strong hatred of Dorne.
Biography[]
During Aegon the Conqueror's attempted conquest of Dorne, the Wyl of Wyl fought alongside the Dornishmen. When Lord Orys Baratheon and his army tried to assault the Boneway, the Wyl of Wyl ambushed them and took them prisoner. He held Orys for five years until House Targaryen ransomed him and his men. Before they were released, however, the savage Wyl of Wyl had their sword hands amputated so that they would never use them again against Dorne. This angered Aegon, and he became bent on revenge. Using his dragon Balerion, the conqueror burned down the keeps owned by House Wyl; however, the Wyls themselves managed to survive, as they had escaped and taken refuge in the mountains, where they hid in caves and caverns.
According to Maester Yandel, Houses Fawnton and Oakheart never forgot nor forgave the infamous atrocities committed by the Wyl of Wyl during the First Dornish War. According to Archmaester Gyldayn, in 12 AC, when the Targaryens placed bounties on every Dornish lord, which resulted in the assassination of a dozen Dornish lords, the Dornish retaliated by placing bounties on the Targaryens and their allies. In the Reach, the Wyl of Wyl turned up at the wedding of Ser Jon Cafferen and Alys Oakheart uninvited, thanks to a treacherous servant, who led the Wyl of Wyl and his men through a postern gate. The latter proceeded to barbarically massacre Lord Oakheart and most of the guests before castrating Jon Cafferen while forcing Alys to watch at the same time. The Wyl of Wyl and his men then took turns raping Alys Oakheart and her handmaids before selling them off to a Myrish slaver. These acts were noted for being the "most infamous acts" committed during the First Dornish War.
Years later, in 37 AC, during the reign of King Aenys I Targaryen, Lord Walter Wyl, the son of the Wyl of Wyl, joined forces with the Vulture King and led a host for the outlaw during the Second Dornish War. After Walter was defeated, Orys Baratheon, who had become bitter and vengeful ever since he lost his sword hand to the Wyl of Wyl, proceeded to amputate Walter's hands and feet as payback for his father cruel attitude.
