King Royce IV Bolton, also known as Royce Redarm, is a minor character in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series. He was a Red King of the Dreadfort from the Bolton Dynasty.
Personality[]
Not much is known about Royce, but it is clear that he was cruel and bloodthirsty. He harbored a deep hatred for House Stark and burned their castle, Winterfell. He also loved to torture his prisoners, and in the television version, he especially loved to torture the Starks that he captured. He possessed great strength, capable of tearing the entrails from his prisoners with his bare hands.
Biography[]
Many centuries ago, during the age of the First Men and countless years before the Andal invasion of Westeros, Royce Bolton was born in the Dreadfort in the North, the ancestral seat of House Bolton, located in northeastern Westeros. During these years, the Red Kings of House Bolton were the biggest rivals and enemies of House Stark of Winterfell, and both ruled small kingdoms among many divided kingdoms in the North, as the Starks would gradually conquer their rivals and force them to submit to vassalage.
The Red Kings waged wars against the Starks for centuries, who were the Kings of Winter. While House Stark also held significant territories, the Red Kings ruled over land stretching from the Last River to the White Knife and the Sheepshead Hills. The Red Kings of House Bolton were known for their cruelty and sadism; they were said to have worn cloaks made out of the skins of flayed Starks. For example, the Red King Royce earned the alias "Royce Redarm" because he tore out the entrails of his prisoners with his bare hands.
During one of the wars between the Red Kings and the Starks of Winterfell, Red King Royce IV successfully conquered Winterfell with his armies and burned it, just as his namesake King Royce II Bolton had done three hundred years earlier. Royce IV killed and tortured many captured Starks by plunging his arm into the bellies of the captive Starks and pulling out their entrails with his bare hand.
Many centuries later, long after the Coming of the Andals and Aegon's Conquest and unification of the Seven Kingdoms, and during the War of the Five Kings taking place in the Baratheon Dynasty, Ramsay Snow managed to conquer and burn Winterfell, just like his ancestor, Royce IV, had done.
