~ Shelton after killing Ken Turner |
Audrey Shelton is the secondary antagonist of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Bang". She is a psychologist who specializes in treating victims of domestic and sexual abuse who murders a reproductive abuser who victimized dozens of women.
She was portrayed by Noelle Beck, who also portrayed Stephanie Mulroney in the Law & Order/SVU crossover episode "Entitled".
Early life[]
Shelton's family inspired her to help crime victims and punish their abusers; her father was a police officer, her mother was a therapist, and her sister suffered years of domestic violence at the hands of her ex-boyfriend. As an adult, she became a psychologist and specialized in treating victims of sexual and domestic abuse, particularly reproductive abuse.
She frequently worked with the NYPD as a consultant in abuse cases, which led to an incident in Buffalo, New York where she beat a child molester within an inch of his life with a baseball bat. She claimed self-defense, a claim the police apparently accepted. She was hailed as a hero in the local media, so the District Attorney's office did not prosecute her for fear of bad publicity.
In addition to her counseling and forensic work, Shelton also gave seminars on reproductive abuse. Detective Olivia Benson of the NYPD's Special Victims Unit attended one of them, and Shelton gave her a business card in case she ever needed her consultation.
"Bang"[]
When SVU investigates serial reproductive abuser Ken Turner, Benson calls Shelton for help in profiling him. Shelton explains that Turner, who has fathered dozens of babies with as many women over the years without their consent, is driven by narcissism and a need for power and control to forcibly impregnate as many women as possible and feels no need to take care of his offspring once they are born. She tells Benson and her partner, Detective Elliot Stabler, that the best way to expose Turner's crimes is for his victims to confront him.
Benson and Stabler track down 20 of Turner's victims and their children and bring them to the SVU station house to confront Turner. Shelton watches with disgust as Turner brags about having 47 children with women across the globe and refuses to take any responsibility for one of his victims who killed herself and their child after he abandoned them. Unfortunately, Assistant District Attorney Gillian Hardwicke informs Benson, Stabler, and Shelton that there is no law against reproductive abuse, meaning that Turner will get away with ruining the lives of dozens of women and children. Turner even flirts with a horrified Shelton before he leaves.
Shelton goes out to dinner with Turner's victims to offer them her support. During the dinner, Turner, who got Shelton's cell phone number from police records, calls her and asks her to meet him at his apartment for a romantic date. Shelton, disgusted by Turner's behavior and outraged at the thought of his crimes going unpunished, accepts so she can close enough to harm him.
She goes to Turner's apartment and pretends to be attracted to him, asking to use the bathroom to get ready for sex. She finds a knife in the bathroom and stabs Turner in the crotch, intending to castrate him. Unbeknownst to her, however, the weapon is actually a wasp knife that Turner had taken from one of his victims who liked to skin dive, and it causes his chest to swell up and explode, killing him instantly. Shelton flees the scene, taking the knife with her.
After finding Turner's body, Benson and Stabler investigate his murder and find out about the child molester whom Shelton nearly killed. They also learn from Turner's victims that Shelton had slipped away during their dinner. Suspecting that Shelton killed Turner, they go to her house to question her. When they arrive, Shelton is waiting for them with the bloody knife in one hand and a glass of wine in the other. She puts the knife down and says that she knew they would arrest her sooner or later, but she insists that she had to kill Turner to make sure he would never hurt another woman. She then asks the detectives to let her finish her drink before they arrest her, as "they don't serve wine where I'm going".
Shelton is then convicted of murder and imprisoned for life.
