XanthusWP (クサントス?) is a horse possessed by Achilles, manifesting as one of his mounts when summoned as a Rider-class Servant.
Profile[]
Background[]
Along with Balius, Xanthus was an immortal horse granted by Poseidon to Peleus as a wedding gift and gifted to Achilles by his father.[1][2][3] Along with the pillaged horse Pedasos, the three were used to pull his chariot, Xanthus and Balius serving as the central pivot.[3]
Appearance[]
Personality[]
Xanthus possesses the ability to speak. Although rarely choosing to speak, he picks the most inopportune moments, such as telling Ritsuka Fujimaru, "They say anybody who gets in the way with another's love affairs gets kicked in the butt by a horse. But if you're a horse already, you won't get kicked, now will ya? Neigh, neigh, neigh!"[1] Described as "truly unpleasant," he enjoys telling Achilles when he has fallen into a dangerous situation.[3]
Xanthus possesses knowledge of strategy games, utilizing them to make analogies, which confuses Achilles.[4]
Role[]
Fate/Apocrypha[]
Fate/Grand Order[]
Event: Apocrypha/Inheritance of Glory[]
During the assault on the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Xanthus muses that the enemy, Darnic Prestone Yggdmillennia, must have been unable to utilize Achilles and Chiron previously, but will likely have summoned them by that point. While Achilles is skeptical, Chiron heeds Xanthus' words and says to each neutralize their counterpart enemy Servant.[4]
Valentines[]
During Achilles' Valentines scenario, he decides to try to gift Xanthus to Ritsuka Fujimaru as a return gift. When Achilles mentions Xanthus' ability to speak, the horse refuses just to make the situation awkward for Achilles. Even when threatened to be forced to carry Heracles, he still refuses to speak. Ritsuka mentions they already saw him speak previously.[5]
Abilities[]
Xanthus, Balius, and Pedasos are summoned as part of the Noble Phantasm Troias Tragōidia. Xanthus is an immortal horse, but, after being summoned as a Noble Phantasm, does not retain his immortality. He is at least considered as though as a Servant.[3]

Troias Tragōidia. The Noble Phantasm of Rider of Red, Achilles. An A rank chariot driven by three steeds. The horses consist of the two divine horses which the sea god Poseidon gave to Achilles’ father Peleus as a wedding gift, Xanthus and Balius, and the famous horse which Achilles stole from a city he attacked using his divine horses, Pedasos. According to legend, Achilles’ chariot is thought to been driven by three or four horses. Xanthus and Balius apparently served as the central pivot while Pedasos had a supporting role.
As divine horses received from Poseidon, Xanthus and Balius were clearly stated to have both been immortal in the original texts. After being summoned as a Servant’s Noble Phantasm, they aren’t quite immortal, but at the very least, they can be considered as tough as Servants themselves.
When Achilles is summoned as a Rider, his most harshly prana-consuming Noble Phantasm is this chariot. In the worst case, it is estimated that it can consume enough prana to summon another Servant besides Achilles.
