Hessian Lobo (ヘシアン・ロボ, Heshian Robo?), also known as Avenger of Shinjuku (新宿のアヴェンジャー, Shinjuku no Avenjā?), is an Avenger-class Servant summoned by Ritsuka Fujimaru in the Grand Orders of Fate/Grand Order. They are initially Rider of Shinjuku before absorbing another Phantom and having their class change to Avenger.
Profile[]
Identity[]
Components[]
Lobo[]
LoboWP (ロボ, Robo?), the King of Currumpaw, was an actual gray wolf (there are diverging opinions) whose name became widespread after being featured on Seton’sWP “Wild Animals I Have KnownWP”. The story goes that he rampaged on the Currumpaw Plains, a vast American pasture, killing over 2,000 heads of cattle in the space of 5 years and slaughtering 250 sheep in a single night without eating them. Naturally, the ranch owners attempted to bring him down by employing all sorts of methods (from poison, to guns and even traps), but supposedly Lobo paid no mind to those. Employed as a famous hunter, Seton came up with an idea: instead of directly facing Lobo (who was feared as “the devil incarnate"), he would make use of his mate - the white wolf Blanca. The curious Blanca was caught in a bear trap and killed by humans. Seeking his mate’s corpse, Lobo was finally caught in a trap. It has been said that the captured Lobo refused all meals from humans and died just like that.[1]
Hessian[]
HessianWP (ヘシアン, Heshian?) refers to the German mercenaries that came to America after being hired by the British government, and the nameless mercenary that rides Lobo was also one of them. Still, the story goes that he got his head blown off after receiving a cannon fire and, without realizing that he was already dead, began to roam about on Sleepy Hollow.[1] He became known as the "Headless Horseman" in the The Legend of Sleepy HollowWP.
Dr. Jack Griffin[]
As they are unstable as a Servant due to both of them being Phantoms, they fuse with several more Phantoms. One such Phantom is Dr. Jack GriffinWP (ジャック・グリフィン博士?), granting them invisibility. While he does not appear to have any influence, there are three individuals listed under the "Gender" section of their status page.
Appearance[]
Unlike actual history, the King of Currumpaw surpasses over 3m in length.[1]
Personality[]
Mutual understanding and the likes are impossible. What we have here is a beast that scatters hatred.[1]
While most mounts typically obey the will of their rider, who makes all the decisions in whatever tasks, the Hessian Lobo is the opposite where the mount makes the decisions and the rider simply obeys whatever decision the wolf makes. The relationship between the nameless mercenary and the King of Currumpaw seems to be on a minimally cordial level. While Lobo initially doesn't like the idea of having someone riding his back, the wolf finds the warrior's existence to be beneficial as he cooperatively kills all of Lobo's enemies without complaint. While Lobo has never opened up to the headless rider, only thinking him as a tool, the nameless mercenary seems to care about Lobo as he willingly chose to fight enemies, alone, to let an injured Lobo escape. As revealed in Anastasia's second interlude, he can be surprisingly talkative under the right circumstances.
Lobo has no love for humanity, even as a Heroic Spirit. His memories of how humans killed his mate and ravaged his home drive him forward, compelling him to seek revenge for what he has lost. However, the hope that his children survived and spread elsewhere compel him to fight alongside Chaldea nevertheless and he eventually will come to see his Master as a packmate even if he will never truly relate to them.
Relationships[]
- Edmond Dantès
- As a fellow Avenger, he embraces a sense of duty out of a kind of compassion towards their revenge.[2]
- Knight Servants
- There are those who shows pity, and there are those who shows respect towards Hessian, who had continued on fighting despite having lost his head. Reactions vary.[2]
- Nursery Rhyme / Enkidu / Mecha Eli-chan / Mecha Eli-chan MkII
- Fundamentally speaking, Lobo is cautious towards all human Servants (and even towards Divine Spirits who are subjects of faith), but as an exception, towards “those perfectly inhuman” he slightly loosens down his guard. However, because he is cautious against oni kin in a different way, he treats Ibaraki-douji and Shuten-douji no different than the others. Jack the Ripper and Jeanne d’Arc Alter Santa Lily are a bit unhappy due to him allowing only Nursery Rhyme to get close and that’s just unfaiiiir.[2]
Role[]
Fate/Grand Order[]
Subspecies Singularity I: Shinjuku[]
Lobo and Hessian are summoned by Baal, and fused together into the Servant, Hessian Lobo. He is intially Rider of Shinjuku, and serves as a member of the Phantom Demon Alliance. Contrary to what others may believe, Hessian isn't the one in control, instead it is Lobo.[3] Hessian only wishes for Lobo to regain his freedom.[4] Japan National Route 20 is his territory in Shinjuku. He is so feared that there is an unwritten rule that if you hear his howl, you stop whatever you're doing and run.[5]
In Barrel Tower, Hessian Lobo, Yan Qing, and EMIYA Alter are informed by Baal that Chaldea has sent Ritsuka into the Singularity. He hacked the Rayshift coordinates to make them fall, but it didn't go so well. Hessian Lobo leaves in a rage after hearing this.[6]
Hessian Lobo chases after Ritsuka and James Moriarty when they intrude his territory while escaping from the Phantom of the Opera and Christine Daaé. He eventually catches to them, forcing the pair fight him. Realizing he’s too weak, Moriarty has Ritsuka escape with Artoria Alter while he holds Hessian Lobo off.[5] After Moriarty escapes, Hessian Lobo returns to Barrel Tower and reports his failure to kill Ritsuka to Baal. He also reports Ritsuka and Moriarty's plan to rendezvous at Shinjuku Station, so Baal sends Hornets there.[7]
After Ritsuka’s party kills some thugs, Hessian Lobo suddenly arrives and kills the thugs’ Super Chimera with a single bite. He turns his attention towards Ritsuka when he and the group become surrounded by the flames of Jeanne Alter‘s Noble Phantasm. Neither the group nor Hessian Lobo can escape like Moriarty predicted, forcing both to fight. Hessian Lobo however proves too tenacious, and escapes through the flames after being struck by Artoria Alter’s Wind.[3]
Later in Barrel Tower, Hessian Lobo requests Baal to fuse him with the Invisible Man. Baal agrees, but questions if Lobo’s hatred can sustain another one. He explains the Invisible Man doesn’t hate anyone, calling him the faded concept of pure self-interest, and saying his power of the invisibility is the only remarkable thing about him. Nonetheless, he agrees to summon and fuse the Invisible Man with Hessian Lobo. He asks Hessian Lobo to ensure his hatred for humans never stops during the process, calling it the source of his strength. He tells him to continue to hate, otherwise he cannot kill Ritsuka, who is the only true human in Shinjuku.[8]
After being fused with the Invisible Man,[8] Hessian Lobo attacks Ritsuka's party just after they killed Yan Qing.[9] He unveils himself, revealing he is now an Avenger. He then targets Ritsuka, not even paying attention to the others. They fight him to protect Ritsuka, but they’re unable to defeat him. Jeanne Alter holds him off while the others escape. As she fights Hessian Lobo, Jeanne Alter tells him that his hatred will never disappear, regardless of how many people he kills until the day he dies. She declares she will put him out of his misery, calling the fleeting dreams they see before death the only solace for Avengers. Eventually though, Hessian Lobo fatally wounds her. She is annoyed he isn’t enjoying his revenge, but realizes he can’t anymore. After suffering another wound, she unleashes her Noble Phantasm to hold it off. She falls after sustaining yet another wound; Hessian Lobo leaves possibly thinking Jeanne Alter is dead.[8]
Later on Route 20, Hessian Lobo is led through a couple of traps by Ritsuka and Artoria Alter on her motorcycle. He easily avoids them, but he's caught in the third trap when he stops upon seeing Cavall II. Taking advantage of the situation, Ritsuka and Artoria Alter fight Hessian Lobo before he can break free. However, before Artoria Alter can finish it off, Hessian blocks her attack after separating from Lobo. Hessian then throws his weapons away, and tries to protect Lobo, who bites off his foreleg and flees. Hessian disappears after Sherlock Holmes tells him Lobo has finally regained his freedom.[4]
Lobo wanders Shinjuku, feeling a sense of loss greater than simple pain. He realizes he lost again because of Cavall II, wondering why he stopped upon seeing him. He knows Cavall II is only a stray dog, yet it makes him heartsick when he thinks about it. Though he wishes to go home, Lobo can’t remember where it was, nor how it felt when he recalls it. He soon comes to realize Shinjuku is the only home he has now. Letting out one last howl, he dies seeing a glimpse of Cavall II.[4]
Summer Event: Death Jail Summer Escape[]
A security system made Hessian Lobo's shape is used by Medb to detain the racers for using their vehicles to cover Connacht with Venus Textures.
Other appearances[]
Lobo is mentioned in Kagetsu Tohya during The Tohno Family Con Game parody story. Nrvnqsr Chaos offers his "beloved dog CourtaudWP", mentioning he can offer Lobo or BeteWP should that be enough.
Abilities[]
After absorbing another Phantom, his Saint Graph was altered and his class was changed to Avenger, significantly increasing his power even though James Moriarty considered that calling it a Demonic Beast after having Fujimaru fought Tiamat and her offspring in Babylonia would be a disservice.
Combat[]
Its speed was also greatly increased, and he became so strong that Saber Alter, Jeanne d'Arc Alter, Sherlock Holmes, and James Moriarty came to the conclusion that one of them would have to sacrifice their self in order for the rest to escape. In the end it was Jeanne Alter's La Grondement Du Haine the attack that slowed him down long enough to allow the others to retreat.[8] Finally, Ritsuka's Party came up with a trap that ended up succeeding in defeating avenger.[4]
In combat, Hessian rides Lobo. According to James Moriarty, having a rider makes Lobo twice as strong. Perhaps even four times, or a hundred.[citation needed]
Lobo commanded by Nursery Rhyme was defeated by Avicebron's Golem Keter Malkuth.[10]
Skills[]
Class Skills[]
- Oblivion Correction (B Rank): That hatred shall never, ever be forgotten. Like a small, unsightly scar carved unto the history of man, it shall remain for eternity.[1][2]
- Self-Replenishment (Mana) (B Rank): For as long as he exists in the world made by humans, he shall continue to devour his feed with hatred as his fangs.[1][2]
- Transparency (D- Rank): This is not the concealment of presence, but physically turning human body transparent through drug administration. Even if one perceives "whether or not he is nearby" from the level of Hessian Lobo's force of existence, one would still be unable to tangibly read his coordinates; a rare case where such low rank of the skill conversely becomes a merit. It amplifies ferocity as a compensation, but... it has entirely no effect on Hessian Lobo.
Personal Skills[]
- Fallen Demon (A+ Rank): A Skill given to mystical beasts and fallen ones - specifically, those of a man-made demonic nature, unattainable through natural means. It improves defense power, resistance against abnormal status, and so forth, though the ability slightly falls short to Natural Demon.[1][2]
- Monstrous Strength (B Rank): A skill, born from the holder's nature as a monster or Demonic Beast, that temporarily grants a rank-up to their Strength parameter for a limited time, determined by the skill's rank.[11][12][13]
- One Cloaked in Death (A Rank): It comes from how the German mercenary (Hessian) that becomes the rider had been reduced into a monster reaching Dullahan. Lobo’s vengeful desire becomes a tangible armor, making it possible for offense.
- Animal Communication (A Rank): A communication of intention with animals that do not speak a 'language of words.[14]
Noble Phantasm[]
Hessian Lobo's Noble Phantasm is Frieren Scharfrichter.[1][2]
Forms and alternate versions[]
Rider of Shinjuku[]
Rider of Shinjuku (新宿のライダー, Shinjuku no Raidā?) is Hessian Lobo's original form before absorbing a Phantom in the Shinjuku Subcategory Singularity.
Combat[]
Mash Kyrielight claims that Hessian Lobo's Saint Graph is enormous. He also boasts impressive speed capable of reaching up to 200 kilometers per hour.[5] In this form he was so strong that Artoria Alter's Wind was required to give him a fatal blow and make him retreat.[3]
Development[]
Creation and Conception[]
Hessian Lobo was designed by Shimokoshi in Fate/Grand Order.[1] Their scenario writer is Yuuichirou Higashide.[2]
Comments from Illustrator[]
"I drew the gigantified wolf swelling up by the power of hatred with a flaring and strongly boiling image. The shackles are as if embodying him never ever forgetting his grudges. The Hessian is famous in Sleepy Hollow... so much so that I had to really think what to make of him, but then I had him with a military uniform that does not really look out of place and a gigantic sword scythe in hand. If I may say so myself, he sure ends up looking like a character from a different game!" (Shimokoshi)[2]
