Subspecies Singularity IV: Salem[]
Lavinia and her family were summoned to Salem by Raum at Abigail's request for a friend.[2] They understood this Salem wasn't correct, and found themselves trapped when they tried to escape. Raum appeared before them in his true form, and ordered them to summon Sut-Typhon, knowing it was their greatest wish.[3]
In Investigating Salem, Lavinia discovered there were others who were invited before her. She soon noticed her family, particularly her grandfather, started to change. He started to believe he was feuding with Abigail's parents, which made him more eager to complete the Ritual of Descent to summon Sut-Typhon. Lavinia understood that was dangerous to do in Salem, but there was nothing she could do.[3]
Abigail started to follow her everywhere, much to Lavinia’s annoyance. Pretending to be her friend, Lavinia taught Abigail the Ritual with a fake grimoire. Eventually, her own memories started to change to make it seem like she had always lived in Salem.[3]
Some time before Chaldea's arrival, Lavinia was invited by Abigail to the woods to participant in a ritual Tituba taught her, along with the other girls. She comes to the woods when she runs into Ritsuka's party, identifying them as outsiders. They try to convince her that their earlier conversation was them practicing for their performance. She runs aways though when Charles-Henri Sanson speaks to her in a heavy accent, wondering if he's a french soldier or a fugitive. She witnesses the group kill a pack of wolves to protect Abigail and the other girls.[5]
While shopping the whale oil in the morning, Lavinia is accused by a villager of blasphemy. Sanson gets him to leave, and apologizes to Lavinia for scaring her last night. Asserting she has no friends, Lavinia introduces herself. She says the villagers hate her family, so the troupe should stay away from her if they want their show to succeed. Mata Hari convinces her to see their performance from a private seating where no one can bother her. Lavinia agrees on the condition they don't tell Abigail that she was out in the forest last night. Otherwise, she'll tell everyone that the group used magecraft to kill the wovles last night.[5]
She encounters Sanson again while walking alone the next night, not expecting to due to the play. She knows he was snooping around her house. She says it's pointless to do so, as it has already begun. She then warns him to stay in Abigail's house tonight. She doesn't know how he protected it. but he'll get through the night if he stays there.[4]
The next morning, she is removed from her home by Randolph Carter and Matthew Hopkins' constables, so Carter can speak with Absalom. She is later taken to the town hall by Nezha to watch the play with Abigail. She apologizes for Tituba's execution, nearly saying she'd still be alive if it wasn't for the village. She and Abigail then watch the play together. Part way through, Lavinia get worried that Sanson isn't present, so she and Abigail go looking for him.[6]
They arrive at the Whateley estate to find Absalom being taken into custody. He tells Lavinia to ask Captain Marsh, the wharf's owner, for help since he's indebted to their family. Later that evening, she sees her father and grandfather have been hanged. She swears revenge on Hopkins.[6]
Staying with Mash at the harbor inn, Lavinia later goes to Gallows Hill after stopping by her home. There she digs out the remains of her family. Mash, Nezha, and Abigail also find her there. Lavinia is delighted to know Abigail is homeless now like her, believing it serves her right. But she knows her house will be rebulit in no time, and she'll have no trouble finding refuge. Abigail assures her that she didn't tell the troupe their secret. Lavinia then tries to convince Abigail to leave Salem with her by Marsh's ship, but Abigail refuses. Abigail apologizes to Lavinia about her family being executed. Lavinia accepts her apology, even though she won't forgive her. Abigail asks her if they'll remain friends, but Lavinia says they were never friends. Abigail refuses to listen, saying they're still friends. She hugs her, then leaves with Mash and Nezha. Lavinia expected Abigail would reject her offer. She then declares she will fulfill her family's wish, and begins speaking R'lyehian. She later gives Hopkins her family's grimoire, the Book of Eibon. She also confesses to conducting one of the book's rituals with Abigail.[7]
The next day, Lavinia murders Hopkins in the woods where Abigail was attempting the Ritual of Descent. She then offers his life as a sacrifice for the Ritual. However his life isn't enough, so she decides to let Hopkins' men kill her. She confesses she taught Abigail the Ritual. However, Sanson knocks the soldiers out, and he tells Lavinia to run away. She runs just as Ritsuka, Mash, Nezha, and Robin Hood arrive.[3]
She is later found deeper in the woods by Mash and Robin the next night. She deduces Sanson has been executed. She explains to them how Raum brought her and family to Salem. How they tried to escape several time to no avail. How Raum ordered them to summon Sut-Typhon, knowing it was their greatest wish. Lavinia reveals she discovered there were other guests before them, suspecting they were the sixth guest. The Native Americans who killed Abigail's parents, the wharf and the ships that shouldn't exist in the period, and Tituba are suspected guests also. Hopkins and Chaldea are suspected of being the seventh guest. Mash then informs her that Raum is currently acting as Carter. Lavina agrees to tell her and Robin about Sut-Typhon, saying she's condemned to die for failing the Ritual. She then asks where Abigail is. Mash answers that she is currently being confined in Hopkins' mansion. Lavinia then reveals how her and family's memories were altered. She then explains Sut-Typhon exists outside of the universe, yet he borders all possible dimensions and is tied to all possible things.[3]
Lavinia enters the town hall the next morning while Abigail's trial as a witch in sucession. She splashes "Carter" with the Powder of Ibn-Ghazi, designed to make spirits materialize, turning his head into that of a raven. It is presumed that she made the powder from Absalom's remains. Her act disables the tow hall's Bounded Field, allowing the Queen of Sheba to enter in her true form. The villagers then turn into ghouls, having been so the entire time. Abigail transforms upon seeing Sheba. The group hold her off when Lavinia reveals Sut-Typhon is about to descend. Raum transforms into his true form. Due to Sut-Typhon's impending descension, Salem's Bounded Field rapidly dissipates, and magical energy is being rapidly consumed across the continent, primarily in heavily populated areas. The group then fight and defeat Raum.[2]
Raum transforms back into his raven-headed Carter self. His head tears itself off, transforming into a full raven. He mortally wounds Lavinia before he is fatally shot by Robin. After the group disconnect Abigail from Sut-Typhon, Lavinia is reconsituted by Circe, though only briefly. Seeing Abigail back to normal, she realizes she failed again. But she thinks that maybe that's a good thing. She confesses that she and her family were fictional characters who never existed in the real Salem. Abigail reaffirms with her that they were always friends. Lavinia then dies after wishing she could see the whales one more time with her.[2] Her body is buried the next day at the shore.[8]
Abilities[]
Lavinia has the same rare talent as high aptitude as a witch like Abigail, however, Abigail is leaps and bounds beyond her due to being a host of an Outer God.[3]
