The Snake Frog (ヘビガエル Hebigaeru) is a limbless amphibian with a snake-like body. It is Zongeh's Soup Dish in his Full Course.[1]
Anatomy[]
The Snake Frog is a pudgy blue amphibian with a body length of 1.7 meters and can weigh at least 90 kilograms. It has a large, round frog-like head with a big drooling mouth while its pudgy body has no visible limbs, making it resemble that of a snake's and it has very large, bulging, yellow eyes with slit pupils. Its also has numerous tiny bumps or spikes on it head, small sharp teeth and a long slobbery red forked tongue.
Behavior[]
It appears to be a very dull creature and does not appear to be very cautious, approaching humans without any concern. However, it will do so rather dully.
Powers and Abilities[]
It is a considerably weak and slow creature and can easily be taken out by a professional Gourmet Hunter with a single punch.
As Food[]
Its liver is considered a delicacy and can be made into a fine soup that is a common and easy to acquire dish in most restaurants. The Snake Frog itself can be roasted over an open fire if out in the wilderness. When pickled in liquor, it makes a popular alcoholic drink. Whether one prefers to eat it or drink it, the Snake Frog is a great pick me up. Just 100 grams of its meat can fetch a price of 3,600 yen.
History[]
Galala Gator Arc[]
After Toriko and Komatsu arrive at the Baron Archipelago, they immediately begin trekking through the forests of the Baron Bog. A Snake Frog soon appears behind Komatsu and moves towards him which greatly spooks him, and Toriko easily takes it out with a single punch. He comments that it was just a Snake Frog and nothing to get worked up over, but Komatsu responds that he has cooked many in his kitchen but it is the first one he has ever seen alive.
Later that night, they cook the Snake Frog over an open fire which attracts several hungry wild beasts. Toriko throws some of the Snake Frog's meat at them so they could survive.[2]
Puffer Whale Arc[]
The Snake Frog is briefly mentioned by Zongeh's followers while they are showing off Zongeh's Full Course Menu where they reveal it was his soup dish. However, Komatsu is unimpressed as many of the ingredients on the menu, including the Snake Frog are quite common dishes.[3]
Variations[]
In the video game series, the Snake Frog is shown to have a variety of different subspecies:
- Snake Frog Beetle (ヘビガエルモド゠Hebigaerumodoki): In Toriko: Gourmet Survival 2.
- Poison Snake Frog (ドクヘビガエル Dokuhebigaeru): In Toriko: Gourmet Survival 2.
- White Snake Frog (ã‚·ãƒãƒ˜ãƒ“ガエル Shirohebigaeru): In Toriko: Gourmet Survival 2.
- Inflated Snake Frog (フクラヘビガエル Fukurahebigaeru): In Toriko: Gourmet Survival 2.
Anime and Manga Differences[]
- In the Toriko Jump Special, the Snake Frog's color scheme is green skin with blue eyes rather than blue skin with yellow eyes.
- In Toei's anime, the Snake Frog's scene is completely removed, and only the brief scene of it being cooked is adapted from the manga.
Appearances in Other Media[]
Toriko Jump Super Anime Tour Special 2009[]
In this adaptation of the Galala Gator Arc, the Snake Frog appears with the same role as in the manga where it surprises Komatsu and is then subsequently beaten and then later eaten by Toriko.
Toriko: Gourmet Survival[]
Snake Frogs appears with a new assortment of subspecies, such as Snake Frog "Endemic Species" and Snake Frog "Rare Species". Snake Frogs appear as common enemies on Megamori Island where they will usually be seen lounging about together in groups. They mainly attack by pouncing or biting and are one of the weakest enemies in the game.
Toriko: Gourmet Survival 2[]
Snake Frogs look and behave exactly like the first game. Their previous subspecies have received new names, Snake Frog Beetle and Poison Snake Frog, and a new subspecies has also been added, the White Snake Frog. Snake Frogs, Snake Frog Beetles and Poison Snakes can be found in Table Prairie while White Snake Frogs can be found in Freezer Ice Field.
Toriko: Gourmet Monsters[]
Snake Frogs appear as enemies and tamable animals and can be fought and caught in the Baron Archipelago. They mainly fight by biting and tackling.
Toriko: Ultimate Survival[]
Snake Frogs are relatively the same as they were in Gourmet Survival but with updated graphics. All of the previous subspecies from the previous games reappear in the game as well as a new subspecies known as the Fukura Snake Frog. Snake Frogs and Snake Frog Beetles reside in the Spring Area of Four Seasons Island, Poison Snake Frogs reside in the Summer Area, and White Snake Frogs and Fukura Snake Frogs reside in the Winter Area.
