The Red Haired Pig (赤毛ブタ Akage Buta) is a pig mammal beast and a high-grade ingredient that is often served at deluxe 5-star restaurants, such as Hotel Gourmet.
Anatomy[]
Red Haired Pigs are large quadrupedal porcine animals that can grow to be over 5 meters in size or larger. As their name indicates, they have red-colored hair and skin along with some dark red spots on their backs. Their faces are quite ferocious, having eyes with black scleras and yellow pupils that always seem to have an angry expression, and its mouth is full of sharp teeth and two prominent short tusks. A female Red Haired Pig has notably swollen teats.
Behavior[]
The Red Haired Pig is a vicious creature that will attack anything that comes within its territory and will pursue the potential prey seemingly without end, showing that it is a predatory carnivore in nature, with a special liking for humans. Despite this, Red-Haired Pigs can be tamed to some degree and be used as farm livestock by humans. 500 years ago during the great food shortage caused by the Gourmet War, it was not uncommon to feed newborn humans to Red Haired Pig livestock in order to survive. It appears though that a Red Haired Pig may spare an infant if it proves to be a competent predator and allow it to live amongst their kind.
Powers and Abilities[]
Red Haired Pigs can either be around the height of an average human or the double of that, in which case if it's the latter it may require at least 10 professional non-gourmet hunters to take it down, but a smaller one can be lured into a trap so long as a capable hunter can outrun it. It is unknown if a similar method will work on a large one.
As Food[]
Red Haired Pig meat is considered a delicacy and is usually served at 5-star restaurants and its meat can be sold at 800 yen a gram. It can be prepared in several ways but it can also be easily roasted over a fire and it will remain just as delicious. Despite its status as a deluxe 5-star food, it still pales in comparison to the more luxurious meats in the world and those served at 6-star or above restaurants, and they are quite easy to come by for most restaurants due to that they can be artificially bred.
History[]
Gourmet War Livestock[]
Five-hundred years ago after the start of the Gourmet War, Red Haired Pigs were kept as livestock by starving villages, however due to the food shortage caused by the war, the only thing villagers could feed the carnivorous pigs was their own infant children, giving birth to them atop piles of hard straw where the pigs could eat them easily. However out of all the infants fed, one managed to prove its predatory will to survive and become part of the herd of Red Pigs, the infant would grow up to become Midora, the boss of the Gourmet Corp..
Galala Gator Arc[]
When Komatsu first boarded the The Gastro Gig, Toriko noted that he smelled several deluxe ingredients on Komatsu, including the Red Haired Pig.
Cooking Festival Arc[]
During his battle with Ichiryu, Midora reminisces about his birth and childhood, and his will to survive amongst the Red Haired Pigs.
Anime and Manga Differences[]
- In the anime, the scene where Toriko notices the scent of Red Haired Pig on Komatsu is not shown.
