In addition to the ten main characters, SpongeBob SquarePants has over 300[1] background characters. They are identified by the artists and animators with individual model numbers. These model numbers usually correspond to when the characters were designed in production. The following is a list of background characters, sorted by their model numbers.
Many of the earliest incidentals originated as storyboard drawings and became numbered incidental designs later, when multiple season 1 episodes were already storyboarded (but not yet shipped to Rough Draft Studios for animation). The customer from "Pizza Delivery," the seventh episode made for season 1 in production order (code #107) but the third episode to be storyboarded,[2] was the basis of Incidental 6[3] from "Squeaky Boots," the second episode made for season 1 in production order (code #102).
Some characters, such as Incidental 35 and Incidental 70, were cut from the model sheets during revisions in season 2, only to reappear in later season 13 episodes. Several incidentals with later numbers appear in episodes before others with earlier numbers; this is due both to many SpongeBob episodes being worked on at the same time, like most animated series, and to numbers not necessarily being assigned in order of appearance, as with Rock Bottomites from season 1 having later numbers than an out-of-appearance-order assortment of characters from up through season 11.
A few incidentals also tend to have their own alternate color palettes/designs which appears to be consistently used for them along with their regular palettes/designs. Some alternate palettes/designs are a lot more commonly used for their incidentals than other incidentals' color palettes/designs.

A layout featuring most of the regular incidental characters, the most commonly used incidentals in the series
Regular incidentals[]
These incidentals have no prefix letter and are the most commonly used background characters in the series. Most of these incidentals were introduced in the first two seasons while a smaller majority of them were introduced in later seasons such as season 3 and onwards, although most of these lie within the 159-189 range. Some of them have also started out as minor or one time characters in their debut appearance only for them to eventually evolve into incidental characters in the future. The SpongeBob crew groups these incidentals into categories called "incidental types" based on their shapes or features. The currently known types are "hotdog," "weirdo," "inbetween," "beaches," "secondary character," "medieval," "elderly," "17th century fish," "kids," and "deep sea." A few incidentals also have at least another model. These alternate models have the same general design as the base model with some changed features. These alternate models are labeled with the suffixes "A," "B," and so on in alphabetical order. A few of these incidentals' model numbers have been reassigned to newer incidentals before belonging to their original incidentals. Many of these incidentals have also had changes in their design and/or color for their default variants as the series went by, although most of the incidentals who had design/color changes are the ones who are present on the original main incidental group model sheet. The incidentals who were pictured on the said sheet are also the only incidental characters who were never considered to be removed or absent from the series since their debut appearance, although the sheet refers them to be "non-existant." Unnumbered incidentals[]
These characters are identified as regular incidentals but they do not have a model number like most incidentals do. Some of them are classified by a name (individual or sheet-wide) with the word "inc" or "incidental" in it, while others do not but are still classified as incidentals.

Suffix incidentals[]
The suffix incidentals are alternate models of regular incidental characters. Instead of their model numbers ending in a single letter such as an "A" or "B" and so on, their numbers end in a whole word in capital letters. The two currently known suffix incidental types are "KID" and "BABY." The "KIDs" make the incidental take the appearance of a child and the "BABYs" make the incidental take the appearance of an infant. There are currently a total of 16 suffix incidentals with there being five "KIDs" and eleven "BABYs."

The "Teen" incidentals are a group of teenage characters that were designed for "The Chaperone." There are 22 "Teen" incidentals in total including the alternate models for the male incidentals. All the males (Teens 1-6) are well dressed anchovies with hair that each have at least one alternate model and all of the females (Teens 7-15) are all normal fish, except for Teen 9 and Teen 13, who are anchovies. Trivia[]
- Most background characters have two models: one for their daytime color palette and another for their nighttime color palette. For example, Fred's palettes are labeled "001-DAY" and "001-NIGHT."
- According to Jay Lender, several of the original incidental characters were removed from the model sheets during the second season after their models were lost in the shuffle during revisions.[6] As a result, many episodes featuring them in storyboards (such as "Christmas Who?" and "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III") had them replaced with different character models.
- The numbers for these characters are known from storyboards. Specifically, numbers 33, 35, 61, 62, 70, and 71 are known from the storyboards of "Christmas Who?."
- It's been proven possible that if a removed incidental has its model retrieved it could return to the show and stay. For example, Incidentals 96 and 97 returned by "Dirty Bubble Returns" and Incidental 33 returned by "Patrick's Tantrum."
- Incidental 30 and Incidental 30A are the first incidental characters to appear in the series, where they appeared in the pilot episode "Help Wanted."

Each incidental has a separate character model. At various points in the show's production, the models have been compiled onto model sheets. One uncolored sheet for the regular incidentals divided them by their appearances. For example, tall rounded fish were grouped together under a category called "hotdogs."
A uncolored Main Model Pack-style series of sheets from 2004 instead lists the characters in order of number. Incidentals 5-8 are in order on sheet K9, followed by Incidentals 9-12 in order on the following sheet; Incidental 72 is also present as an unnumbered example worm on another sheet.[7]
A colored compilation sheet also lists the characters in order of number. The sheet has gaps for the numbers of removed incidentals, who are incorrectly labeled as "non-existant" [sic]. The following incidentals who were absent from this sheet were Incidentals 1B-1D, 19, 23A, 24A-24Q, 33, 35, 38A, 43, 44, 50-59, 61, 62, 66, 70-72, 74-79, 81A-81C, 83A, 83B, 88-89B, 92A-92B, 95-101, 109-113, 117, and 120-149. Vincent Waller uploaded the pages of this sheet to his Twitter account in February 2018, and Adam Paloian uploaded photographed sheets to his Twitter account in April 2019.
The character models for the Rock Bottomites were in the files of the PS1 version of SuperSponge. Adam Paloian uploaded to his Twitter Incidental F4's character model on August 1, 2017, two hillbilly sheets in November 2018, and three Empty Head Society sheets in January 2019.
On October 5, 2020, the official SpongeBob Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram each made a post with two images with the prompt "Which Background Character is Your Favorite?" Surrounding the question in both images are model poses and the numbers for numerous Incidentals, seemingly taken from the most recent version of the model sheet, though Incidentals 3-5 are number-swapped with Incidentals 6-8. There are various differences with Incidentals 1, 6, 16, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 30A, 36, 37A, 38, 39, 45, 48, 49, 49A, 60, 64, 82, 83, 84, 86, 87, 90, 93, 104, 106, 114, 115, 116, 118, 119, 151, 154, 155, 156, and 157.
On December 8, 2020, Adam Paloian posted on Twitter several images of models, including his designs for the "PM" incidentals, "C" incidentals, and "CM" incidentals, revealing various unused models at the same time.
More recently, crew members such as Robertryan Cory, Ian Vazquez, and Chris DeRose have been posting some of the incidentals they've designed.
