Sonic the Hedgehog (ソニック・ザ・ムービー[1],Sonikku za Mūb?, lit. "Sonic the Movie"), also known as the Sonic Cinematic Universe (SCU),[2] sometimes referred to as the Sonic Film Universe,[3] the Cinematic World of Sonic the Hedgehog,[4] or the World of Movies,[5] is an American CGI/live-action film series produced by Paramount Pictures that is based on the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series of the same name. It features animation from Sega's Marza Animation Planet along with the production company Blur Studio.
Based on the global blockbuster video game franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world's speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik and his plans for world domination.[6]
After settling in Green Hills, Sonic is eager to prove he has what it takes to be a true hero. His test comes when Dr. Robotnik returns, this time with a new partner, Knuckles, in search for an emerald that has the power to destroy civilizations. Sonic teams up with his own sidekick, Tails, and together they embark on a globe-trotting journey to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.[7]
Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.[9]
Around the World in 80 Seconds - a short film that takes place after the events of the first Sonic the Hedgehog film. It features Sonic exploring many places on Earth within eighty seconds. It was released as an extra with the digital release of the film on 30 March 2020.
Sonic Drone Home - an animated short film that takes place after the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It features Team Sonic dealing with one of Robotnik's Badniks trying to upgrade itself at the junkyard. It was released as an extra with the digital release of the film on 24 May 2022.[13]
A Very Sonic Christmas - a short film created to promote Sonic the Hedgehog 3. It features Team Sonic helping Santa deliver presents across the world. It was released online on December 11 2024.
The film series has been called the "Sonic Cinematic Universe" on numerous occasions. It was first coined by director Jeff Fowler in a USA Today interview.[14]
The series itself uses some elements originating from the Early Sonic canon, such as naming Sonic's initial planet "Mobius", introducing the doctor as "Robotnik" first, and having Sonic receive his shoes as a gift from someone.
As of April 2024, the cinematic universe's model is to use side series (e.g. TV shows) to flesh out specific characters, while having the movies feature larger casts dealing with larger events.[16]
