“ Only I can face Gotham's madness and not be overcome. I have perfectly optimized my brain chemistry. I am the one sane person in an insane city. Tonight, I confront you with your monstrous inadequacies. Then, as Cro-Magnon met Neanderthal, I club you, skin you and wear your hide. Because you're unfit for it. Gotham City needs Batman. And after tonight...Batman will be me. „
~ Hugo Strange, Detective Comics #942

Professor Hugo Strange is a major antagonist in DC Comics.

He used to be a normal psychiatrist, but he got overly obsessed with Batman and his true identity, and he has plotted numerous schemes that revolve around genetics and mind control. As such, he became a recurring foe of Batman.

In the Batman comics during DC Rebirth, he was the main antagonist of the story arcs I Am Gotham and Night of the Monster Men, respectively.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • He is disturbingly obsessed with Batman, trying to kill him various times in repeated failed attempts to take his place out of sheer narcissism.
  • He has turned countless people into the Monster Men, deformed cannibalistic giants where just one of them can take down a dozen men.
    • These mutant creatures are blackmailed to do Strange's dirty work in exchange for temporary antidotes, as he has them go on murderous rampages in Gotham City multiple times, killing at least hundreds of innocent people overall.
  • Although other villains in the DC Universe are worse, Strange is just an ordinary human, so he has less resources than them, and he has one of the most personal enmities with Batman alongside The Joker.

Pre-Crisis[]

  • Creating his own fear dust that even predates that of the Scarecrow, he plans to spread it across all of America so he can take over the world.
  • Having Rupert Thorne mind-raped for months on end, pushing him to gun down GCPD commissioner Peter Pauling and nearly do the same to Mayor Hill and Dr. Thirteen before getting arrested, all to Strange's clear delight.
  • Sending a robotic version of Bruce to assassinate Alfred.
  • Persecuting Bruce Wayne and his stockholders in various ways, which include:
    • Leaving a dead cat on a noose at Warren Carstairs' doorstep, with the heavy implication that his daughter will be next.
    • Having thugs beat Franklin Hersch's face to a pulp in an alleyway in front of his girlfriend.
    • Putting a fake ghost in Eric Hammond's home for sheer intimidation.
    • Showing up at Wayne Manor just to give Alfred a heart attack.
    • Reporting Bruce as an unworthy parent to social services, who nearly took away his new foster son, Jason Todd.

Post-Crisis[]

  • Hypnotizing Max Cort into becoming Night-Scourge, a brutal serial killer who even targets people who were merely suspected of being criminals. He eventually gets gunned down by the police in self-defense because of this.
  • Kidnapping Catherine Klass, the mayor's daughter, in an attempt to frame Batman, beating and possibly raping her out of sheer sadism and spite as he ties her to his bed half-naked while making creepy sexual comments towards her the entire time.
  • Holding Robin at gunpoint in a failed attempt to force the amnesiac Bruce Wayne to admit he's Batman.
  • Taking over the East End of Gotham by threatening to kill Catwoman and then destroy everything she holds dear, including her friends and the Alleytown Kids. In the same story arc, this happens, and he also tries to have Captain Cold executed for dissidence.
  • Manipulating Jeremiah Arkham into becoming the next Black Mask by preying on his psychosis with Joker's help, even personally helping him try to kill thousands of people in Gotham just for his own amusement.

DC Rebirth[]

  • While under Amanda Waller's thumb, Strange leads several suicide attacks while trying to crash a plane, freeing Solomon Grundy, and bombing a bridge. He also brainwashes Gotham Girl's brother into becoming a homicidal maniac with help from Psycho-Pirate, thus forcing her to kill him.
  • Killing four men dressed as Batman with Jigsaw-like boobytraps to satisfy his own sadistic urges. It's even implied that he does this more than once, judging from how he tells his staff to "prepare the next batch of specimens".
