Shou Ronpo (ショウ・ロンポー Shō Ronpō) is a Rebellion leader and the commander of Kyurangers from the Ryu System. He becomes the tenth member of the team, Ryu Violet (リュウバイオレット Ryū Baioretto, lit. Dragon Violet), later evolving into Ryu Commander (リュウコマンダー Ryū Komandā, lit. Dragon Commander). Two years after the permanent defeat of Don Armage, Shou remains in the Rebellion as Supreme Commander, while Stinger takes over him as commander of the Kyurangers.

Aged 40, Shou was born on September 9th.[1]

History

Fighting in the Rebellion and becoming Commander

As a member of the Rebellion, Shou served under Supreme Commander Big Bear. While searching for the other Change Kyutamas and the nine Kyurangers, he devised an alternate method of fighting, developing system to use the Skill Kyutamas, in particular the Ryu Kyutama, to force a transformation into Ryu Violet. However, this system was incomplete, and had a time limit imposed on it.

During those days, Shou was headstrong, courageous and refused to listen to orders, choosing instead to fight the Space Shogunate Jark Matter instead of sitting by and letting evil thrive. When the Rebellion's leadership came under attack by the Jark Matter assassins Ikargen and Mardakko, Shou chose to confront them despite his imperfect transformation. The transformation failed mid-battle, and Shou would've been killed if not for Big Bear's intervention. Big Bear was mortally wounded and sacrificed his life to allow Shou to escape. This event left Shou in charge of the Rebellion, and instilled in him the consequences of insubordination. Tvicon TV STORY-Space.9: Burn! Dragon Master

Collecting the Kyutamas

Shou gains Pegasus Kyutama

A depiction of Shou Ronpo accessing the power of the Pegasus Kyutama.

As depicted in a series of illustrations by Shou Ronpo himself, he traveled across various constellations in an epic journey to gather the power of the legendary Kyutamas so as to oppose the tyranny of Jark Matter taking him to places such as amidst a sea of scorching magma to a frigid wasteland. Among the Kyutamas he collected was that of Pega-san of the Pegasus System, who had resonated with Shou's burning desire to see the defeat of Jark Matter. Traveling together, Shou supposedly wielded the power of Pega-san to defeat the Giant Monster of planet Babangi. However, the authenticity of parts of Shou's story would be doubted by Naga Rei. Recruiting the Kyurangers

Heeding the word of Big Bear, Tvicon TV STORY-Space.9: Burn! Dragon Master Shou Ronpo sought out the people who would become the Kyurangers as well as gathering the Kyutamas. The first such person he found was Stinger, a young man who was searching across space for his older brother Scorpio, who had sold out him and his tribe in the Sasori System to Jark Matter, to the point of attacking Jark Matter members himself. Approaching Stinger, Shou was engaged by the youth, who assumed that he too was a member of Jark Matter. Though making short work of Stinger, Shou realized his strength and verified him as a potential Kyuranger when he saw the Sasori Kyutama drop from his person. Picking up the Kyutama while presenting the Transformation Controller Seiza Blaster, Shou offered Stinger a chance to put his strength to good use by taking Jark Matter down. Tvicon TV STORY-Space.13: Stinger's Challenge To His Brother! Respecting his wish to find his brother, Shou planted Stinger to spy on Jark Matter for such information as well as anything else of use to the Rebellion. Tvicon TV STORY-Space.5: 9 Ultimate Saviors

Commanding the Kyurangers

Boarding the ORION, Shou was introduced by Raptor 283 to the seven Kyurangers. Making his eccentric nature apparent to everyone present while dropping off a pile of auxiliary Kyutamas, Shou gave the team the mission of stopping Jark Matter from destroying the planet Needle through the deprivation of its Planet Jume. While Raptor was concerned with the threat of Stinger, Shou Ronpo was preoccupied with thinking of an okay phrase, eventually coining the term OKyu. Tvicon TV STORY-Space.3: The Man from the Desert Star

Shou next sent the Kyurangers to Earth, a planet strangely containing numerous Moraimarz. Introducing the Kyulette, which would randomly select an away team of five in order to conserve Kyu Energy, Shou sent Raptor with them to buy some peaches while Balance and Naga Rei were left behind on the ORION to work on equipment under him. Raptor's trip to Earth would ultimately lead to her realizing her dream of fighting Jark Matter as she awakened her Kyutama and became Washi Pink, helping in taking down the first Daikaan of Earth. Shou denied Naga's suspicion that he knew Raptor was destined to become a Kyuranger. Tvicon TV STORY-Space.4: Dreamy Android

Becoming RyuCommander

When Shou ordered six Kyurangers to destroy five Consumarz without defeating their governors, Spada objected saying that the governors would retaliate by oppressing the people who lived under their shadow. Shou acknowledged this but prioritized the Consumarz because Earth could implode if they absorbed all its Planetium. Spada, Lucky and Hammie eventually defied orders and broke off from the group to feed citizens whose food was stolen by the governor. This led Garu, Raptor, and eventually Stinger to be ambushed and defeated by Ikargen and Madakko. Shou ordered Spada's group to rescue them without trying to defeat the duo. Remembering his own failures, Shou gave them a warning: defying a single order can sometimes lead to the collapse of an entire organization.

Knowing they would lose, however, Shou immediately flew to Earth with the Ryu Kyutama, using it to become RyuViolet for the first time since the death of Big Bear. Using this form, Shou held Ikargen and Madakko off long enough for Lucky, Stinger, Garu, Hammie, and Raptor to escape. Spada, however, stayed to help Shou, leading to his recapture. Upon returning to the ship, Shou explained the Kyurangers the origin of RyuViolet and why he refused to call himself a Kyuranger with that form.

His explanation was punctuated with Ikargen demanding that all Kyurangers except the "imposter [Shou]" come if they want to save Spada. Shou snuck away to try and save Spada by himself, rendering Lucky unconscious in the process. Shou managed to free him using RyuViolet, but Spada refused to run while Shou was still fighting. Shou relented on the condition that Spada obey one simple order - survive.

Shou was forced out-of-morph just as Lucky and the remaining Kyurangers on Earth arrived. Lucky convinced Shou that he should seek to fulfill his desire to fight even if it meant transcending the legend of "nine" Kyurangers. The nine Change Kyutamas then interacted with the Ryu Kyutama to spawn a giant dragon, which granted Shou's wish to fight with his comrades by fueling the Ryu Kyutama, changing it into a tenth Change Kyutama. Shou immediately used it to morph into the evolved form of RyuViolet - the RyuCommander. With the other Kyurangers, Shou was able to drive back Ikagen and Madoko. However , his suggestion to officially change the name of the Kyurangers to Jyuurangers (to reflect that there were ten rangers instead of nine) was shot down by the others.

Shou was among the team whom pursued Madakko through a black hole which they found to be a wormhole leading to an alternate Earth free of Jark Matter. With Garu and Hammie, Shou was arrested by Dekarangers Senichi Enari and Koume Kodou on suspicion of being Alienizers due to their lack of Visas, and brought to the Neo DekaBase. The situation was soon cleared up by Special Police Dekaranger chief Doggie Kruger, a canine alien who bore a curious resemblance to their wolfman teammate. Finding that the wormhole would soon close and leave them stranded, Shou, Garu and Hammie boarded RyuTeiOh, using the DekaWing Cannon provided by the Dekarangers to keep the wormhole in time for Lucky and Naga to defeat Madakko and retrieve the Rashinban Kyutama. Shou Ronpo Card

Seeking the Kyutama of the Tokei System, the Kyurangers came to the planet Toki and turned the 12 keys needed to unlock it within 30 minutes. Approaching key X, Shou an apparition of Big Bear, and found himself in his attire before he inherited the title of Supreme Commander from him. Shou conversed with Big Bear for a while until Balance hurried him, both to turn the key in time and because their visible comraderie disheartened Naga, who was not yet as attuned to such feelings. Personality

He tries to give off the persona of being the "Strongest Ever", but his real character is like an old man, showing as he occasionally breaks his back.

Even in the worst of times, he keeps a proper tone.[2]

He is also goofy, gentle, and level-headed.

Shou has a habit of missing the point in front of him to figure out how to word things right. For example, when most of the team was affected by Stinger's toxin, Shou wanted to know what to use to respond to the Kyurangers instead of "Roger."

However, Shou does have a serious side, showing his leadership figure when he warned the Kyurangers not to engage some of Jark Matter's assassins, both of whom are at their dangerous level yet. It is shown he had been guilt-ridden due to the death of his predecessor Big Bear and don't want to see his group die quickly in front of his eyes, until Lucky and the other eight Kyurangers reminded Shou to move on and carry the late-Big Bear's will in his honor, no matter what sacrifice Shou and the other Kyurangers must make.

Another downside of his personality is that he's a compulsive deceiver, making his team members question his decisions, especially Naga.

Ryu Violet

"Ryu Kyutama! Seiza Change!"
―Transformation announcement via Ryutsueder[src]

Ryu Violet (リュウバイオレット Ryuu Baioretto) is Shou Ronpo's initial Ranger form. This form predates all the modern-day Kyurangers (save of course Tsurugi Otori), having been used by Shou during his days as a soldier in the Rebellion. The system for this form was invented as a way to allow those who had not been chosen by the Kyutama to fight. As the system Shou had invented used Skill Kyutama instead of Change Kyutama, this transformation had a time limit. After the time limit expired, Shou was left weakened and vulnerable.

Ryu Commander

"Ryu Kyutama! Seiza Change!"
―Transformation announcement via Ryutsueder[src]

Ryu Commander (リュウコマンダー Ryū Komandā) is Shou Ronpo's newer, evolved Ranger form. When the power of the nine Change Kyutama resonated with his desire to fight together with the Kyurangers, Shou's Ryu Kyutama evolved from a Skill Kyutama to a Change Kyutama. This allowed his transformation to evolve into a newer, stronger form, removed the time limit it originally had, and manifested the Ryu Voyager to fight alongside him.

Etymology

  • The name Shou Ronpo (ショウ・ロンポー Shō Ronpō) is a pun on the Japanese pronunciation (小籠包 in kanji, ショウロンポウ in katakana) of xiaolongbao, a type of steamed bun from China.

Notes

  • For years, fans have debated whether he or Tsurugi Otori represented Kyuranger's Sixth Ranger. The debate was officially put to rest after Houou Soldier was confirmed to be the one representing Kyuranger's Sixth Ranger, supported by:
  • Of the 88 constellations, Ryu Commander represents the constellation Draco, "The Dragon".
  • The Ryu Violet suit is the breastplate and helmet from the Ryu Commander suit combined with the ToQ 7gou costume.
  • He is the first Purple Ranger to be the second-in-command of the team.
  • Due to Power Rangers Cosmic Fury not having a Purple Ranger, Shou Ronpo has no direct counterpart in the series. Indirectly, Billy Craston and Solon fill his role in the story as the mentor figures, and Ryu Voyager, adapted as the Cosmic Dragon Zord, is primarily piloted by Zayto.
