Cute Impact and The Crystal Capturing Contraption are the first episode of the second season of My Little Pony: Pony Life and the twenty-seventh episode overall.
In Cute Impact, Twilight Sparkle makes a startling discovery, but instead of telling her friends, she decides to try and solve the problem by herself.
In The Crystal Capturing Contraption, Fluttershy interviews the rest of the Mane Six about the Cotton Candy Comet in the hopes of becoming Equestria's newest pony news reporter.

The Mane Six celebrate the New Moon with a midnight party at Sugarcube Corner, and Twilight Sparkle brings a portable planetarium so they can observe the stars and constellations. After her friends fall asleep, Twilight discovers through her telescope a pink comet in space hurtling toward Ponyville. The knowledge of this discovery fills her with worry until the next morning, but when her friends ask about it, she assures them nothing is wrong and leaves.
At the library, Twilight tries to look for more information on this pink comet. Her friends appear and observe her with concern, but she continues to act like everything is fine. When they find her secretly researching cataclysms and end-of-the-world scenarios, they confront her, and she explains what she discovered the previous night and says she kept it from them so they would not worry.
Twilight finally accepts her friends' help, and they discover together that the pink comet is called the Cotton Candy Comet, a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon that brings joy and a current of candy-coated crystals and whose arrival is celebrated with a wish-making festival. With her worries eased, Twilight finally manages to get some sleep.
The Crystal Capturing Contraption[]
Following the success of her unboxing video, Fluttershy decides to try being a news reporter, and for her first story, she chooses to cover the incoming Cotton Candy Comet. Taking Rarity's advice, Fluttershy conducts one-on-one interviews with the rest of the Mane Six to get their opinions on the comet. Most of the interviews are average and uneventful, but when Fluttershy goes to interview Pinkie Pie, she finds Pinkie putting together a strange mechanical device.
Pinkie explains that, with the coming of the Cotton Candy Comet, a current of candy crystals is expected to fly over Equestria later that evening, and Pinkie wants to collect these crystals to use in her baking recipes. With Pinkie distracted by her crystal-collecting task, she is unable to help with Fluttershy's news story, and she takes her device to the top of Mt. Volcanope.
Even at the top of the volcano, Pinkie is too far away from the crystal current to collect the comet crystals. Remembering Fluttershy can grow to giant size, Pinkie returns to her and apologizes for dismissing her news reporter dreams, and Fluttershy apologizes for putting her own desires over being a good friend. The two make amends, and Fluttershy uses her size-changing ability to get Pinkie close enough to the crystal current. Pinkie is able to collect all the crystals she needs, and Fluttershy fulfills her dream of being a reporter.
